Punter Thomas Morstead was cut today, but it sounds like the veteran won’t be a free agent for long. Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports that Morstead is expected to re-sign with the organization. The 39-year-old spent the past two seasons with the Jets, including a 2023 campaign where he led the NFL in punts and punting yards.
Barrows also notes that Jacob Cowing made the initial roster but is expected to land on injured reserve as he nurses a hamstring injury. This could open the door for one of the team’s cut WRs to land back on the active roster. That grouping includes Russell Gage, who had more than 1,500 receiving yards for the Falcons between the 2020 and 2021 seasons.
Elsewhere on offense, Jeff Wilson‘s reunion with the 49ers proved to be short lived after he joined the organization earlier this month. The veteran spent the past two-plus seasons in Miami, but he had a successful run in San Francisco to begin his career. This included a 2020 campaign where he compiled 733 yards from scrimmage and 10 touchdowns.
49ers Sign WR Robbie Chosen Following Workout
After hosting him for a workout yesterday, per Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2, the 49ers have opted to add veteran free agent receiver Robbie Chosen to their roster for training camp. To make room for Chosen on the roster, another wide receiver, Marquez Callaway, was released. 
Chosen — who originally entered the NFL as Robby Anderson, then Robbie Anderson, and then was briefly known as Chosen Anderson — has had a rollercoaster of a career in football. After changing positions from cornerback to wide receiver at Temple and overcoming academic eligibility issues, Chosen went undrafted in 2016, signing initially with the Jets. Immediately, the undrafted rookie became an impact WR3 on the offense before leading the Jets in receiving for the next two seasons, despite having a different quarterback throwing to him all three years.
After playing the 2019 season on a second-round tender, Chosen signed a two-year, $20MM deal with the Panthers. In the first year of the deal, he put up his first 1,000-yard season, earning a two-year, $29.5MM extension on top of his original deal. But, when reunited with Sam Darnold in the second year, his receiving yards were limited to 519 yards. Chosen opened his third year in Carolina with a strong 102-yard performance but struggled in the games that followed. After getting into an in-game argument with the team’s wide receiver coach, then-interim head coach Steve Wilks kicked Chosen out of the game.
The next day, Chosen was traded to the Cardinals, and his career has been in decline ever since. In 10 games with Arizona, Chosen caught seven balls for 76 yards and was released in the offseason. He spent the 2023 season in Miami, and though he caught a 68-yard touchdown in his first game appearance, Chosen only caught three more passes in eight games for the rest of the year. Around this time last year, he signed a first time with San Francisco but failed to make the 53-man roster and signed back with Miami’s practice squad, appearing in two games and catching one ball for five yards before being released.
Chosen likely doesn’t stand much of a chance at making the 49ers’ 53-man roster this time around, either. In all likelihood, he’s a camp body that brings a bit more experience and upside than Callaway. The 32-year-old should get plenty of opportunities in the preseason, though, as San Francisco is likely to be careful with its group of pass catchers heading into the regular season, given recent injury histories at the position.

Woods joins the Falcons’ practice squad after a workout last week that also included veterans Kwon Alexander and Rashaan Evans.
The Browns are adding Freeman after the seven-year veteran was released by the Cowboys before the regular season. Freeman could potentially pitch in as the team keeps working without Nick Chubb.
Yeast becomes the next former-Rams defensive back to join the Panthers. Current Carolina defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero used to serve as the secondary coach in Los Angeles, and Yeast joins Jordan Fuller, Nick Scott, and Troy Hill as former students of Evero to sign a deal with the Panthers.
Chosen’s time off the Dolphins’ practice squad could be a short one. Chosen was called up as a standard gameday elevation twice in the first two weeks of the season, reaching his limit for the year. If the team re-signs him to a new practice squad contract, his count should start over.
Reagor saw 11 games and a start last year for New England, catching seven passes for 138 yards as a deep threat. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like the Patriots will be giving him similar opportunities this year after this release.
Pierre played a big part in the Steelers’ secondary in 2021 and 2022, starting six games and logging an interception in each season. His role was extremely reduced last year with the arrivals of Joey Porter Jr.. and Patrick Peterson, but his experience could be crucial in a position room that only rosters five cornerbacks as Cameron Sutton remains on suspension.

With regular kicker Matt Gay listed as questionable for the season opener after hernia surgery, the Colts will call up Shrader from the practice squad as an emergency option. The 25-year-old has not made a regular season appearance in his career, but that could very well change tomorrow.
WR Robbie Chosen Joins Dolphins’ Practice Squad
In need of healthy options in the receiving corps, the Dolphins have brought back a familiar face. Robbie Chosen is back in the organization, as noted by Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.
This will be a practice squad arrangement, Jackson adds. The 31-year-old could soon see himself elevated to the active roster given the injuries the team is currently dealing with, however. Odell Beckham Jr. and River Cracraft are set to miss the first four games of the season. Beckham will begin the year on the reserve/PUP list, while Cracraft was classified as injured reserve/designated for return on Tuesday.
Beckham’s health status has been a talking point during the offseason, and the team elected to take a cautious approach by keeping him on the PUP list to start the regular season. A new rule for 2024 allowed teams to place two players on IR without naming them to the 53-man roster, but they will still count toward the limit of eight regular season activations once healthy enough to be brought back. While they are sidelined, Chose could step into a depth role.
The former Jet, Panther and Cardinal made three appearances last season with the Dolphins. That span included only four catches (one of which was a touchdown), so it came as no surprise he had a lengthy spell on the free agent market. Chosen signed with the 49ers earlier this month, but despite not having Brandon Aiyuk in the fold for the time being the team included him in its roster cuts on Tuesday. Rather than taking a practice squad deal in San Francisco, the Temple product has elected to return to Miami.
The Dolphins waived Erik Ezukanma to reach the 53-man limit, but they have since added him to the practice squad. He will join Chosen as a pass-catching option capable of filling out the depth chart while Beckham and Cracraft rehab their respective injuries.
49ers Activate Talanoa Hufanga, Move Roster To 53
Two 49ers remain out out of the mix (but definitely not out of headlines, in Brandon Aiyuk‘s case), though both standouts are still employed by the team. Though, Trent Williams remains on the reserve/did not report list. Here is how the defending NFC champs pared their roster to 53 by today’s deadline:

Hufanga’s status represents a positive development for a 49ers team in need of them. The All-Pro safety had been rumored to join Greenlaw on the reserve/PUP list. Avoiding it does not guarantee Hufanga will be ready for Week 1, but it keeps the fourth-year defender in the equation for the 49ers’ first four games. They are choosing to carry Hufanga on the 53-man roster and go week-to-week with him. This undoubtedly led to Walker being moved off the roster.
Conversely, Mitchell’s time with the team may be over. San Francisco surprised most by vaulting the 2021 sixth-round pick into a starting role to open that season, dropping Trey Sermon to a backup spot. Mitchell operated as San Francisco’s preferred starter — as long as he was healthy, which was sporadic — until the October 2022 Christian McCaffrey trade. The 49ers now have Jordan Mason and rookie Isaac Guerendo as CMC backups.
A hamstring injury has sidelined Mitchell, potentially opening the door to an injury settlement. Davis will be able to return this season for the 49ers; Mitchell’s designation would prevent that. The 49ers are down to seven IR activations as a result of the Davis decision. A 2022 sixth-round pick, Davis remains in the team’s plans despite injuries largely keeping him out of action. Davis has played just three NFL games, and he suffered another injury — a knee issue requiring surgery — during camp.
The 49ers, who will bring many of these players back to the practice squad, cut two recent third-round picks — Gray and Latu. The latter has not played yet as a pro, missing his entire rookie season with an ACL tear. Gray has been unable to carve out a role on a 49ers team that has seen Jauan Jennings stick as the team’s WR3; rookies Ricky Pearsall and Jacob Cowing are also in the mix now.
49ers To Add WR Robbie Chosen
Brandon Aiyuk remains a 49er, but he is not practicing. Frustrated by his contract situation for months, Aiyuk remains a hold-in. As a result, the 49ers are bringing in a veteran.
San Francisco is adding Robbie Chosen, according to NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero. Known more in recent years for his name changes, Chosen has starter experience and, per Pelissero, received interest elsewhere. After working out for the 49ers, the former Jets and Panthers starter will receive another opportunity.

The Seahawks hosted Chosen earlier this offseason, but ESPN.com’s Field Yates notes the 49ers brought him in for an audition Wednesday. Chosen follows Tracy Walker as recent 49ers tryout invitees to receive a contract offer. Walker signed with the team late Wednesday night. The other player invited for a workout, safety Rudy Ford, has not signed.
The former Robby Anderson, Robbie Anderson and Chosen Anderson is now 31 and is coming off an unremarkable Dolphins stint. Though, a 68-yard touchdown grab in Miami’s 70-20 demolition of Denver led to an interesting four-catch, 126-yard stat line from last season. The Panthers rostered Chosen from 2020-22 but traded him shortly after Matt Rhule, Chosen’s college HC while at Temple, was fired. The deep threat produced a 1,000-yard season in 2020, leading to a two-year, $29.5MM Carolina extension, and flashed as a deep threat during his Jets tenure. At this point, however, Chosen would qualify as a depth option.
Beginning camp without Ricky Pearsall healthy, the 49ers have since seen the first-rounder return to practice. The defending NFC champions still have Deebo Samuel and the recently extended Jauan Jennings in uniform, and Ronnie Bell and fourth-round rookie Jacob Cowing are rostered as well. The team also signed Chris Conley and brought back Trent Taylor this offseason, but Chosen will be asked to contribute as well. With 16-man practice squads in place, Chosen could compete for a spot there if he is unable to land a 53-man spot.
WR Robbie Chosen To Visit Seahawks
Robbie Chosen will attempt to find a new home ahead of the NFL’s summer break. The veteran receiver has a minicamp tryout lined up with the Seahawks, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Chosen – who has undergone multiple name changes in recent years from Robby Anderson to Robbie Anderson to Chosen Anderson – has likewise bounced around the league. Following a four-year run with the Jets, he had a career year in Carolina in 2020 (95 catches, 1,096 yards). Things took a turn for the worse after that point, though, and he was traded to the Cardinals midway through the 2022 season.
The 31-year-old made minimal impact in Arizona across 10 games there. It thus came as little surprise when he was released last March. Chosen went on to sign with the Dolphins, although he was among the team’s final roster cuts. In spite of that, he was immediately retained via the practice squad and wound up making nine appearances. Chosen made just four catches in Miami, leading to his extended free agent stay.
He will look to end it this week with a strong showing in Seattle. The Seahawks are certainly set atop the depth chart with veterans D.K Metcalf and Tyler Lockett in place alongside 2023 first-rounder Jaxon Smith-Njigba. The team also has Dee Eskridge on the final year of his rookie contract along with recent addition Laviska Shenault. Those two will be competing for depth spots alongside 2023 UDFA Jake Bobo.
Chosen will aim to use minicamp – which runs from Tuesday to Thursday – to earn a spot on the Seahawks’ offseason roster and as such the chance to compete for playing time in training camp. Seattle currently has a full roster and just $1.41MM in cap space at the moment, so only a low-cost offers would be feasible. Given the way Chosen’s career has gone recently, though, such a deal would no doubt be sufficient to add him.
