Steelers Sign UDFA Minnesota QB Tanner Morgan
The Steelers will end up adding some quarterback help this offseason, signing undrafted Minnesota quarterback Tanner Morgan, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 tweets that his deal includes a $25K signing bonus. After setting several Golden Gopher records, Morgan will try to make his mark at the NFL level.
Morgan became a starter at Minnesota about halfway through his true freshman year after initially losing a quarterback competition to walk-on true freshman Zack Annexstad. Once Morgan took the reins, though, he didn’t give them back, becoming the Golden Gophers’ go-to passer for the next four years.
Morgan would go on to win a Gopher-record 33 games and set Minnesota single-season records for passing yards and touchdowns in 2019. He missed some games down the stretch for Minnesota but had shown some toughness with 46 straight starts before missing any time with injury. Morgan slipped out of the draft due to concerns over his lack of an NFL arm. His accuracy really suffers the further downfield he throws. Morgan is a true competitor, though, who showed development and improvement in each passing year.
In Pittsburgh, Morgan joins a quarterbacks room that lost Mason Rudolph to free agency but still rosters second-year starter Kenny Pickett and veteran Mitchell Trubisky. With only two quarterbacks on the roster, there’s no reason to believe that Morgan can’t stick on the roster, at the very least on the practice squad. He’s shown that he can improve and compete when instructed, and he’ll get the chance to do so in the Steel City.
UDFA Kansas State QB Adrian Martinez Signing With Lions
The Lions will be enlisting a bit more help at the quarterback position this offseason, signing undrafted Kansas State quarterback Adrian Martinez, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Martinez will try to find a place in the NFL after five years as a starter at the college level.
Martinez began his career as a four-year starter at Nebraska, starting as a true freshman for the Cornhuskers. He had perhaps one of his best seasons as a college rookie completing 64.6 percent of his passes for 2,617 yards and 17 touchdowns with only eight interceptions. Martinez struggled through his sophomore year and had to fight off Luke McCaffrey to hold on to his starting job for the next two seasons. He ended his Cornhusker career with a 14-24 record as a starter, passing for 8,491 yards, 45 touchdowns, and 30 interceptions.
Martinez used his final year of eligibility to transfer to Kansas State, where he became the starter for the Wildcats and led them to a 5-2 start before injuries limited him for the rest of the year. At Kansas State, Martinez passed for 1,261 yards and six touchdowns with only one interception. Martinez also brings a dangerous rushing element to the field. Over five seasons at the college level, he rushed for 2,928 yards and 45 touchdowns, giving him 96 total touchdowns for his career.
In Detroit, Martinez enters a quarterbacks room that includes veterans Jared Goff and Nate Sudfeld and rookie third-round pick Hendon Hooker. He’ll likely be trying to compete for a third-string spot. His rushing availability makes him a useful practice squad quarterback who can run the scout team offense to simulate a division opponent like Justin Fields.
Rams Make Toledo DL Desjuan Johnson Mr. Irrelevant At No. 259 Overall
With the final pick of the 2023 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Rams have drafted Toledo defensive lineman Desjuan Johnson, making him this year’s Mr. Irrelevant. The 23-year-old will get to learn behind the best in the business as he gets Aaron Donald as a potential mentor.
Johnson spent five years as a Rocket, becoming more and more disruptive over time. Once he became a starter on the Toledo defensive line in 2020, Johnson took permanent residence in his opponents’ backfield. He ended his college career with 15.0 sacks and 47.0 tackles for loss in only 31 starts, earning second-team All-MAC honors in 2020 and 2021 and first-team All-MAC honors last season.
The two marks on Johnson are the level of competition he played against and his lack of ideal size. At 6-foot-2, 285 pounds, Johnson doesn’t look on the surface to be the ideal NFL interior defender. Neither does Donald, though, and we all know how that’s turned out.
With the departure of Greg Gaines and A’Shawn Robinson in free agency, there should be snaps available in the rotation of the interior defensive line. There are a few other players on the depth chart to compete with for those snaps, but especially getting to be in the same room with an undersized defensive line star like Donald, Johnson will have every opportunity to prove the Mr. Irrelevant title wrong.
Chargers Take QB Max Duggan At No. 239
The Chargers’ first- and fourth-round rookie wide receivers should have a familiar face throwing to them at rookie minicamp as Los Angeles has selected TCU quarterback Max Duggan in the seventh round at No. 239 overall. Duggan is the eighth Horned Frog taken in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Duggan was a four-year starter in Fort Worth who broke out in his senior year. Duggan’s breakout year saw him take TCU to the College Football Playoff National Championship game where the overmatched Horned Frogs ran into the buzzsaw that was the Georgia Bulldogs. His disaster game occurred in what will now be his new home stadium, SoFi Stadium.
The blowout loss in the season finale shouldn’t overshadow a stellar senior season in which Duggan completed 63.7 percent of his passes for 3,698 yards and 32 touchdowns while only tossing eight interceptions. Duggan adds an element on the ground, as well, rushing for 1,856 yards and 28 touchdowns over his four years in college.
The Chargers are obviously set at quarterback with Justin Herbert returning for a fourth season. Los Angeles picked up Herbert’s fifth-year option but are hoping they won’t need it as they continue to work on extending the 25-year-old. The team had used Chase Daniel as a backup passer in recent years, but with Daniel remaining a free agent, Easton Stick, who hasn’t appeared in an NFL game since 2020, is the only other quarterback on the roster.
Duggan obviously won’t be expected to challenge Herbert for a starting position, but he can push Stick for the backup job. Despite Stick’s experience of being with the team since 2019, Duggan brings a familiarity and chemistry with two of the team’s new targets. He, Quentin Johnston, and Derius Davis will be following in the footsteps of Chargers legend LaDainian Tomlinson, wearing the Bolt on their helmet after college in Fort Worth.
Steelers To Sign CB Chandon Sullivan
Carving out some late headline space on Day 3 of the draft, veteran slot cornerback Chandon Sullivan is signing with the Steelers. The former Packers and Vikings defender’s agency announced the move Saturday afternoon.
After four Green Bay seasons, Sullivan spent 2022 in Minnesota. He will join a Steelers team that lost Cameron Sutton but has added Patrick Peterson and Joey Porter Jr.
Sullivan, 27, came to Minneapolis to replace Mackensie Alexander in the slot last year. Pro Football Focus did not view the veteran as being especially reliable for the Vikings, who have revamped their defense after a one-and-done Ed Donatell season. PFF rated Sullivan just inside the top 100 at corner last year, though the five-year vet gave up only one touchdown during his Vikings slate.
The former Eagles UDFA, however, has extensive experience patrolling the slot and has never missed a game due to injury. Prior to playing a career-most 945 defensive snaps last season, Sullivan surpassed 700 defensive plays in his final two Packers seasons. The 5-foot-11 defender ranked among the top five slot corners in snaps per target and snaps per reception in his Packers finale, intercepting three passes. But he has been unable to score a notable payday since hitting free agency initially in 2022. Sullivan played on a one-year, $1.75MM deal last season.
In addition to Peterson and Porter, the Steelers have Levi Wallace, Ahkello Witherspoon, James Pierre and Arthur Maulet under contract. Maulet logged the most snaps of any Steeler in the slot last season; PFF ranked Maulet just ahead of Sullivan at corner, slotting him 90th. The team has seen its top corners depart in each of the past two offseasons, losing Joe Haden (eventually to retirement) in 2022 and letting Sutton join the Lions this year.
Saints Trade TE Adam Trautman To Broncos
Sean Payton will pick up another former Saint. The new Broncos HC is trading for tight end Adam Trautman, Field Yates of ESPN.com reports (on Twitter).
This is a pick-swap deal. New Orleans will collect Denver’s No. 195 overall pick in this trade, while NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport adds (on Twitter) the Broncos will receive No. 257 from the Saints. With the sixth-rounder, the Saints chose wide receiver A.T. Perry out of Wake Forest.
Trautman, for whom the Saints traded four draft picks to draft 105th overall in 2020, is going into a contract year. Despite the Saints trading four Day 3 picks to move into the 2020 third round for Trautman, he has not yet put it together as a pro. The Saints gave converted receiver Juwan Johnson an extension this offseason, prioritizing the ascending pass catcher as their top tight end. Weeks later, Trautman will follow his old coach to Colorado.
A former Dayton prospect, Trautman posted his best receiving numbers in 2021 (27 catches, 263 yards, two touchdowns). But the Saints had both Johnson and veteran gadget cog Taysom Hill in the mix at tight end. Trautman still played a healthy snap share in 2021 (76%) and logged 521 snaps (57%) in his New Orleans finale campaign. Pro Football Focus rated Trautman as an above-average run blocker as well.
Denver’s tight end room centers around 2022 third-round pick Greg Dulcich. While an injury delayed the UCLA product’s debut, he showed promise in the passing game despite beginning his career during the dysfunctional Nathaniel Hackett-Russell Wilson partnership. The Broncos signed Chris Manhertz this offseason, but he is onboard due mostly to his blocking pedigree. Albert Okwuegbunam remains on Denver’s roster, but the 2022 trade candidate fell out of favor with the team last season. Okwuegbunam is going into a contract year but will certainly not be assured of a roster spot on Payton’s first team.
Cowboys Trade For No. 178, Pick CB CB Eric Scott Jr.
The Cowboys have made a move to get atop the sixth round. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero (on Twitter), Dallas has acquired pick No. 178 from Kansas City. In exchange, the Chiefs got a 2024 fifth-round pick.
The pick proved to be one of the more well-traveled selections in the 2023 draft. The selection was initially a Bears pick that was sent to the Dolphins in the Jakeem Grant trade. Miami later traded the pick to Kansas City in the Tyreek Hill deal, and then the Chiefs finally sent off the pick to Dallas.
The Cowboys have used their acquired pick to select Southern Mississippi cornerback CB Eric Scott Jr..
The defensive back got into 31 games for Southern Miss over the past three seasons, collecting five interceptions. That included a 2022 campaign where he compiled 27 tackles and a pair of pick-sixes. His play-making ability should afford him a good look in the Cowboys secondary.
Browns Tab QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson At No. 140
We have moved into a Day 3 run on quarterbacks. The Browns are continuing the trend by taking UCLA passer Dorian Thompson-Robinson at No. 140.
Thompson-Robinson follows Fresno State’s Jake Haener (Saints), Georgia’s Stetson Bennett (Rams), Purdue’s Aidan O’Connell (Raiders) and Houston’s Clayton Tune (Cardinals) off the board.
Thompson-Robinson decided to use his fifth year of college eligibility and return to UCLA for the 2022 campaign. In his fifth season as the starter, the quarterback set career-highs in completion percentage (69.6), passing yards (3,169), and touchdowns (27). Thompson-Robinson was also a threat on the ground, adding another 645 yards and 12 touchdowns.
It was only a year ago that the Browns gave up a historic haul to acquire Deshaun Watson. The front office is likely hoping that Thompson-Robinson can develop into a steady backup who won’t disrupt the offense. The team let 2022 Watson fill-in starter Jacoby Brissett defect to the Commanders in free agency. The rookie will be joining a depth chart that also features Joshua Dobbs and Kellen Mond.
Cardinals Choose QB Clayton Tune At No. 139
Houston quarterback Clayton Tune is heading to the desert. The Cardinals are taking the multiyear Cougars starter at No. 139.
Tune’s arrival comes after Trace McSorley left for the Patriots and at a time in which the Cardinals are not certain who their Week 1 starting quarterback will be. Kyler Murray‘s status for the Arizona opener is very much in doubt, and Colt McCoy also missed the conclusion of the Cards’ 2022 season.
Murray is expected to make an early-season return from his December ACL tear, but the Cards’ franchise quarterback does not sound like he will be ready for Week 1. McCoy battled arm and calf issues, leading him to IR, but he resurfaced to replace Murray for two games prior to the latter’s ACL tear. McCoy sustained a concussion in Week 15, his third start of the season, and did not play again. The Cardinals cleared their backup from concussion protocol in Week 17, but McCoy experienced more symptoms during a practice soon after and finished the season out of action. McCoy is going into his age-37 season; one year remains on his contract.
While Murray and McCoy did not finish last season, the Cardinals do now have a crowded QB room. They recently signed Jeff Driskel, and David Blough is on Arizona’s offseason roster as well. Tune moves the position group to five.
ESPN’s Scouts Inc. ranked Tune as this year’s ninth-best QB prospect, slotting him 188th overall. The Cougars gunslinger posted a 40-touchdown pass, 10-interception season as a senior last year, throwing for 4,074 yards. This comes after a 30-10 year in 2021. Taking over for D’Eriq King with the American Athletic Conference school, Tune put up some nice numbers in helping the team to 20 wins over the past two years. Houston was a bit more successful in 2021, going 12-2. The 6-foot-2 passer will now see if he can crack the Cardinals’ 53-man roster.
Commanders Acquire No. 137 From Bills
The Commanders made a move up the board early in Round 5. They are acquiring No. 137 overall from the Bills, who will add No. 150 and No. 215, Field Yates of ESPN.com tweets.
With the pick, Ron Rivera‘s team chose Clemson edge rusher K.J. Henry. This marks the third Clemson D-lineman to be chosen in this draft, following first-rounders Myles Murphy and Bryan Bresee. Overall, the Tigers have seen four front-seven standouts chosen in this draft, with the Ravens taking linebacker Trenton Simpson in Round 3.
This pick proves interesting for the Commanders, given their present defensive line situation. The four first-round D-linemen chosen from 2017-20 — Jonathan Allen, Daron Payne, Montez Sweat, Chase Young — remain on the team. But Washington now has both Sweat and Young going into contract years. The Commanders passed on Young’s fifth-year option this week.
Henry posted 13 sacks over the past four seasons and finished with a career-high nine tackles for loss in 2022. The Commanders used former seventh-round pick James Smith-Williams as Young’s primary fill-in last season; Young’s 2021 ACL tear — a complex injury that led to the option decline — has given Smith-Williams considerable run opposite Sweat. But Washington will bring in some additional depth in Henry.
