Waller will now be able to officially return to the field today as he attempts to shake off a year’s worth of retirement. Head coach Mike McDaniel expects him back at practice “very soon,” potentially even this week, per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.
The Bears have landed the services of the veteran Freeman as they deal with absences from D’Andre Swift, Roschon Johnson, Kyle Monangai, and Travis Homer. Hankins had gotten the starting nod in the team’s last preseason game for that same reason, and he’ll now hand off that role to Freeman.
Ferguson, the Dolphins’ former long snapper of the past five years, finally gets a job after his release from Miami. The Texans were really liking what they were seeing out of undrafted rookie Austin Brinkman, but a minor, short-team injury will keep him from the team’s final preseason game, requiring at least a short stay from Ferguson.
49ers Place T Andre Dillard On IR
The 49ers look to have moved to a swing tackle decision; an injury will lead to an easier call. San Francisco placed Andre Dillard on IR on Thursday. Barring a belated return after an injury settlement, this move will keep Dillard out of the picture for the 49ers this season. This comes days after the team activated Dillard from the active/PUP list; not much practice time ensued for the six-year veteran.
After a season with the Packers, the former first-round pick joined the 49ers on a vet-minimum deal. Flaming out as the Titans’ left tackle starter, Dillard was competing for the swing tackle role Jaylon Moore‘s Chiefs defection vacated. As it stands, it looks like converted guard Spencer Burford will slide into that role, The Athletic’s Matt Barrows notes.
[RELATED: Assessing 49ers’ 2025 Offseason]
Burford began taking tackle reps early last season, even as Moore held the role. The 49ers may have been grooming the former guard starter for that gig, as Moore eventually drew a two-year, $30MM offer — a rate that surprised even John Lynch — from the Chiefs. Burford had been squarely in the mix to take over, and with Dillard officially out of the equation, it looks like the contract-year blocker will assume one of the NFL’s most important swing roles. The 49ers were rumored to have a deal in place with D.J. Humphries this offseason, but it never came to fruition. Humphries is now with the Rams.
Trent Williams has not played a full season since 2013. Moore helped gain free agency interest because Williams missed seven games last season. The future Hall of Fame tackle has missed at least two games due to injury in each of his five 49ers seasons; an ankle injury kept him off the field during last season’s second half. A former fourth-round pick who drew scrutiny for missing a key block that stalled the 49ers’ overtime drive in Super Bowl LVIII, Burford made 29 guard starts from 2022-23 but spent the ’24 season on the bench. Burford did log 31 left tackle snaps last season. He started the 49ers’ preseason opener at LT.
Dillard, 29, has considerably more time there but has never justified his first-round pedigree. The Titans gave him a three-year, $29MM deal but demoted him during the 2023 season and cut him months later. Dillard, who drew trade interest as Jason Peters‘ backup in Philly, spent the 2024 season as a Packers second-stringer. He could resurface elsewhere via an injury settlement, but for the time being, he is on San Francisco’s IR list.
The 49ers also signed defensive linemen William Bradley-King and Demone Harris while also waiving D-lineman Michael Dwumfour.

- Waived: LB Otis Reese
- Reverted to IR: LB Anfernee Orji
The Titans swapped linebackers today, replacing Otis Reese with Brian Asamoah II. The latter was waived by the Vikings yesterday, but he’ll quickly land on his feet in Tennessee. The former third-round pick spent three years in Minnesota, collecting 30 tackles in 46 games. 802 of his 990 snaps came on special teams. He’ll be taking the spot formerly held by Reese, who started five games for the Titans over the previous two seasons.
Minor NFL Transactions: 11/29/24
Here are the NFL’s minor moves on Friday:
Atlanta Falcons
- Signed to active roster from practice squad: LB Demone Harris
Cincinnati Bengals
- Signed to active roster from practice squad: OT Devin Cochran
San Francisco 49ers
- Waived: WR Ronnie Bell
Tennessee Titans
- Signed to active roster from practice squad: DB Daryl Worley
The 49ers waived Bell after a frustrating season from the 2023 seventh-rounder. He appeared in all 17 games in 2023 and played all but two games this year, but only managed two catches for 22 yards despite expanded opportunities after Brandon Aiyuk‘s ACL tear. Any team that claims Bell on waivers will take on the remainder of his 2024 salary as well as the $2.2MM owed to him across 2025 and 2026, though that money is not guaranteed. However, Bell’s struggles this year will likely dissuade any team from claiming him on waivers. If he clears waivers, he will be free to sign with any team’s active roster or practice squad.

Falcons Place OLB Lorenzo Carter On IR
The Falcons made a surprising roster move today. It’s been a fast-moving situation for outside linebacker Lorenzo Carter, who has played in every game so far this season. The sequence of events has led to Carter being placed on injured reserve, per Falcons digital team reporter Terrin Waack.
The situation began on Wednesday of this week, when it was reported that Carter was in the NFL’s concussion protocol. He had originally been placed on the team’s injury report under the designation of “illness” after not practicing, but Atlanta updated the designation to “concussion” by the end of the day. Carter missed the next two practices before ultimately being ruled out for tomorrow’s game.
What makes this sequence of events so surprising is that concussions rarely warrant a stint on IR. At a minimum, we’ve seen players navigate the league’s concussion protocol in days. To see Carter being ruled out for the next four weeks because of the head injury adds some concern and intrigue to the situation.
Carter had been the starter across from Matt Judon for every game this season, except for one in which the team only started one outside linebacker. In his extended absence, Arnold Ebiketie and James Smith-Williams will likely be fighting for the available snaps across from Judon.
To fill the newly open spot on the 53-man roster, Atlanta signed veteran cornerback Kevin King from the practice squad. King has appeared in all six games this season between time on the active roster and practice squad, mostly contributing on special teams.
Additionally, the Falcons announced that cornerback Natrone Brooks and defensive end Demone Harris will function as their standard gameday practice squad elevations in Week 7.

Placed on IR (designated for return):
Taylor Heinicke was widely believed to be on the trade block, and it would have come as little surprise if the veteran passer had been released. Atlanta signed Kirk Cousins in free agency and drafted Michael Penix Jr. eighth overall in April. Those two are set to handle starting and backup duties in 2024 (and beyond, if things go according to plan), which suggested Heinicke was expendable. Instead, he will prepare for a second season with the Falcons.
King’s efforts to return to regular NFL action included a contract with the Falcons in March. The former Packers corner sat out the 2022 season while rehabbing multiple injuries. Last year, an Achilles tear forced him to miss another campaign. He was unable to carve out a roster spot in Atlanta, but as a vested veteran he will immediately hit free agency without needing to pass through waivers.
A number of recent draftees are included in the list of players being waived. As a former UDFA, Blair does not meet that criteria but his inclusion is a surprise. The 26-year-old was a standout in the preseason, and ESPN’s Marc Raimondi notes Atlanta is interested is retaining him via the practice squad. The same will no doubt be true of Logue, a sixth-round pick in this year’s draft.
Teams are allowed to designate two players to return from IR without naming them to the 53-man roster. A number of teams have taken advantage of that new rule today, and in Atlanta’s case it means Hellams will not occupy a spot for the time being. The earliest he can be activated is Week 5.
