Minor NFL Transactions: 5/13/17
Today’s minor moves:
- The Steelers have waived running back Dreamius Smith, the club announced on Friday. Smith, 24, originally entered the league as a Chargers undrafted free agent in 2015, and spent most of his rookie campaign on San Diego’s practice squad before being promoted for one contest near the end of that year. He’d signed a futures deal with Pittsburgh in January, but the Steelers didn’t have an opening at running back after drafting James Conner in the third round.
- The Giants have swapped out three roster spots at the back end of their roster, signing running back Khalid Abdullah, cornerback SaQwan Edwards, and safety Trey Robinson while waiving cornerback Nigel Tribune, wide receiver Rob Wheelwright, and running back Daryl Virgies, tweets James Kratch of NJ.com. New York also formally announced the signing of undrafted free agent offensive lineman Chad Wheeler, who reportedly landed a $20K bonus.
- The Rams have waived guard Alex Kozan and cornerback Ishmael Adams, according to Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Both players were signed as undrafted college free agents earlier this month, but didn’t make it to Los Angeles’ rookie minicamp.

Chargers Place Melvin Gordon On IR
TUESDAY, 1:34pm: The Chargers have officially placed Gordon on IR, promoting running back Dreamius Smith from their practice squad to replace him on the 53-man roster, per a team release.
MONDAY, 3:24pm: Another rookie will see his 2015 season come to an early end, as the Chargers are placing running back Melvin Gordon on injured reserve due to cartilage damage in his knee, head coach Mike McCoy said today (Twitter link via Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune).
While Gehlken initially indicated that Gordon will undergo surgery on the knee, Rand Getlin of the NFL Network (Twitter link) hears that Dr. James Andrews is evaluating the injury, and it’s not clear yet whether surgery will be required. Gehlken (Twitter link) has since confirmed that a decision will be put off until Gordon receives a second opinion.
It was a disappointing rookie season for Gordon, in the midst of a disappointing all-around year in San Diego. One of two backs selected in the first round – along with Todd Gurley – Gordon rushed for 641 yards on 184 attempts, an average of just 3.5 yards per carry. The 22-year-old has yet to record his first NFL touchdown or 100-yard game.
The Chargers have not yet announced a corresponding move to fill Gordon’s spot on the 53-man roster.

New Orleans already has a fullback on the roster in Austin Johnson, but he was a surprise scratch on Sunday and he may have fallen out of favor with coaches. Conner, nicknamed the Terminator, was a favorite of Rex Ryan while with the Jets. Conner followed Ryan to Buffalo in 2015, but he was let go before the start of the season. Linebacker John Lotulelei, tackle Jesse Davis, guard Taylor Boggs, defensive end Keith Browner, guard Kadeem Edwards, defensive end Efe Obada, and defensive end DeAngelo Tyson were also showing their stuff for Seattle.
- The Jaguars brought in kickers Zach Hocker and Randy Bullock for a workout on Wednesday, but Josh Scobee was not among those in attendance, according to Michael DiRocco of ESPN.com (Twitter links).
- In addition to their previously reported look at Jeff Demps, the Jets tried out running back Akeem Hunt on Tuesday, a league source tells Florio. Wide receiver Larry Pinkard also got a look from Gang Green. Chris Ivory is dealing with tightness in his quad, so the Jets might opt to add a running back if he needs to sit out for a while.
