Jaguars Meet With Ex-Texans GM Rick Smith

Rick Smith will interview for the Jaguars’ GM vacancy on Wednesday afternoon, as Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. The former Texans GM is a hot candidate in this cycle, having drawn interest from no less than four teams in recent weeks.

Smith recently interviewed with the Falcons and the Lions are slated to meet with him soon. Meanwhile, the Washington Football Team is also interested in having Smith run the football operations department. Previously, WFT nearly hired Smith before putting the GM role on the back burner.

Smith left Houston after the 2017 season when his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer, and is generally well regarded around the league. He spent 2006-2017 with the Texans, and held the EVP of Football Operations title for his final six years.

The Jaguars have been on the hunt for a new GM since firing Dave Caldwell in late November. Despite holding the worst record in the league, candidates should still see the potential in Jacksonville. The Jaguars just barely missed a Super Bowl berth in 2017 and they may be in position to draft Clemson superstar Trevor Lawrence. Meanwhile, head coach Doug Marrone is on the hot seat, so the incoming GM could have an opportunity to pick his own HC, if Marrone is dismissed.

Jaguars To Interview Louis Riddick For GM Opening

Louis Riddick is a popular man these days. The Monday Night Football commentator, who has already interviewed for the GM openings in Houston and Detroit, will interview for the Jaguars’ GM position as well, according to Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen of ESPN.com (via Twitter).

Schefter reported a few days ago that Jacksonville was interested in Riddick, but it had not yet set up a summit. If his interview with the Jags goes well, Riddick might be stepping into a very intriguing opportunity.

Thanks to the Jets’ shocking win over the Rams on Sunday, the 1-13 Jaguars now find themselves in pole position in the race for Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence, widely regarded as the best quarterback prospect the league has seen in a long time. Jacksonville’s next GM may very well have the chance to hitch his wagon to Lawrence, and he will also have two first-round picks and a league-leading amount of cap space at his disposal.

Jacksonville parted ways with former general manager Dave Caldwell at the end of November. Though the Jags looked to be a team on the rise after narrowly missing a Super Bowl berth in 2017, they lost double-digit games in every other season with Caldwell in the GM post. They are once again in a rebuilding phase, but Lawrence would go a long way towards accelerating that process.

The team will also have a decision to make on head coach Doug Marrone at the end of the season, and the new GM will presumably have a major say in that regard.

Jaguars To Be Without Punter In Week 15

The Jaguars will be without a punter for their matchup with the Ravens this afternoon. As Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets, Jacksonville’s regular punter, Logan Cooke, has been ruled out due to an illness, and kicker Aldrick Rosas is likely to handle punting duties.

The Jags do not have another punter on their practice squad, so there is no option to call someone up in Cooke’s absence. Plus, as Cooke also serves as the club’s holder for field goal and extra point attempts, Jacksonville will need to have another player assume those responsibilities.

The 1-12 Jaguars are neck-and-neck with the 0-13 Jets in the Trevor Lawrence sweepstakes, and Jacksonville is already a heavy underdog to Baltimore. Although it would be wrong to wish an illness on anyone, Jags fans are probably happy for any development that will better their chances of landing Lawrence.

The Jags will be helmed by Gardner Minshew, who was renamed the starting QB earlier this week. Minshew doubtlessly gives Jacksonville the best chance to win, which may or may not be a good thing for the club’s long-term future.

It’s unclear if Cooke’s illness is in any way related to COVID-19.
