Chris Reed

Panthers Pick Up Chris Reed’s Option

The Panthers have exercised Chris Reed‘s option for the 2020 season, as Field Yates of ESPN.com tweets. Reed figures to provide depth along the interior line, addressing a lower priority item on the Panthers’ offseason checklist.

Reed, 28 in July, was with the Dolphins up until his late-season release. The Panthers claimed him in December and put him on the field for three games down the stretch.

His play got them curious enough to see what he can do in camp. By exercising the option, the Panthers will have Reed under contract for one more season at $1.425MM. The sum is non-guaranteed, however, so the Panthers aren’t necessarily bound to him. Reed will occupy a spot on the 90-man roster and aim for making the 53-man cut in September.

Earlier this week, the Panthers declined the option for wide receiver Jarius Wright, which will free up a few extra dollars in mid-March. Meanwhile, they seem intent on keeping former MVP Cam Newton as their starting quarterback.

Dolphins Claim WR Mack Hollins

Another veteran wide receiver will head to Miami via waiver claim. The Dolphins submitted a successful claim for former Eagles wideout Mack Hollins on Wednesday.

Hollins follows Trevor Davis, whom the Raiders recently cut, to south Florida. The Dolphins have lost multiple receivers to season-ending injuries in recent weeks.

The Dolphins also signed offensive lineman Evan Brown off the Giants’ practice squad. They waived offensive lineman Chris Reed and cornerback Ken Crawley, the latter with an injury designation, to make room on their 53-man roster.

With their receiver situation battling injuries for most of the season, the Eagles gave Hollins extensive work. He played in at least 50% of Philadelphia’s offensive snaps in six games this season but produced just 10 receptions for 125 yards. The 2017 fourth-round pick’s rookie contract runs through 2020, so the Dolphins will have a chance to evaluate him in the offseason as well.

The Dolphins signed Reed to a low-end two-year deal this offseason; he played in five games with one start. Brown is a rookie UDFA out of SMU who’s played three snaps this season. A former Saints corner, Crawley played in four Dolphins games this season.

Jaguars Release QB Ryan Nassib

Less than a month after signing with the team, quarterback Ryan Nassib‘s tenure with the Jaguars has come to an end. The team announced that they have released the 27-year-old. The team has promoted offensive lineman Chris Reed from the practice squad to take Nassib’s spot on the roster.

Ryan Nassib (vertical)The 2013 fourth-rounder was signed in mid-September to provide the team with some additional depth behind behind Blake Bortles and Chad Henne. With Bortles struggling and Henne disappointing during a brief cameo, the pairing made sense, especially when you consider Nassib’s connection to Tom Coughlin and Doug Marrone. Ultimately, Nassib didn’t see the field for Jacksonville during his two weeks with the squad. The quarterback only has five NFL games under his belt, but he’s completed nine of his 10 pass attempts for 128 yards and one touchdown.

Reed joined the organization as an undrafted free agent out of Minnesota State in 2015. He ultimately appeared in 10 games as a rookie, including four starts. His season ended prematurely when he was placed on the injured reserve with a toe injury. He was waived by the organization in early September, but he subsequently caught on with the practice squad. He’ll presumably compete with the team’s reserve lineman (including Tyler ShatleyJosh WellsWill Poehls, and Josh Walker) for reps.

Jaguars Place Aaron Colvin On IR

Aaron Colvin‘s season could well be defined by the time he did not spend on the field. A 2016 slate that began with the third-year cornerback suspended for a positive PED test will end with an IR trip.

The Jaguars placed the part-time starter on IR with an ankle injury sustained last week against the Texans while also putting guard Chris Reed on the season-ending list as well. Reed injured a toe in Week 14. The team promoted defensive back Akeem Davis and wide receiver Tony Washington to fill the duo’s roster spots.

A 2014 fourth-round pick, Colvin started four of the 10 games in which he played, representing a step down from the 15 starts he made a season ago. Once back from the four-game ban, Colvin returned to a team that now housed Prince Amukamara and Jalen Ramsey. Nevertheless, Colvin graded as the Jags’ best corner, per Pro Football Focus, which bestowed its No. 43 ranking on the former Oklahoma standout.

Colvin will enter a contract year in 2017. Reed joined the Jags as a rookie UDFA out of Division II Minnesota State but still made four starts at guard, residing as the team’s starting left guard prior to going down earlier this month. The Jaguars now have 13 players on IR.
