Raiders Work Out CB Brian Poole
After getting cut by the Patriots last week, Brian Poole is now looking for his next gig. Per Aaron Wilson (on Twitter), the veteran cornerback auditioned for the Raiders today. The team also worked out defensive linemen Braxton Hoyett, P.J. Johnson, and Daniel McCullers.
The Saints reached an injury settlement with Poole earlier this month, cutting him from their injured reserve. He later joined New England’s practice squad with the expectation that he’d get promoted to the active roster, but he didn’t see the field for the Patriots before receiving his walking papers.
The 29-year-old spent the 2019 and 2020 seasons with the Jets, with Pro Football Focus grading Poole as a top-12 corner during those two campaigns. Prior to his Jets run, Poole spent three seasons with the Falcons. Now, he’s looking to join a Raiders depth chart that’s led by Casey Hayward, Brandon Facyson, Nate Hobbs, and Amik Robertson.
McCullers has 76 games of experience after being selected in the sixth round of the 2014 draft. He got into 73 of those games with the Steelers between 2014 and 2019, but he was limited to only three games with the Bears in 2020. The 29-year-old has remained unsigned throughout the 2021 campaign. Johnson, a 2019 seventh-round pick, and Hoyette, a former undrafted free agent out of Mississippi State, have combined for one career appearance.

Steelers Sign Devlin Hodges To P-Squad
Devlin Hodges wasn’t gone for long. After waiving the quarterback over the weekend, the Steelers inked him to a practice squad deal on Monday, per a club announcement. With Duck under contract, and running back Wendell Smallwood on the way, the Steelers have their initial taxi squad in place. Here’s the full rundown:

The Steelers were set to roll with Hodges as their QB3, up until they claimed Josh Dobbs off waivers from the Jaguars. Last year, Hodges went from an unheralded UDFA on the practice squad to a fill-in starter after Ben Roethlisberger went down. He wasn’t able to keep his momentum after a hot start, but coaches still like him as an emergency option.
Smallwood was one of the Eagles’ main running backs in 2018, but didn’t much action with Washington in 2019. In 15 games, he registered 22 carries for 81 yards, good for a 3.7 yards per tote average.

Lynch is probably the most well known of these names. The former Broncos first-round bust signed with the Steelers last year as insurance after multiple quarterback injuries. He’s running out of chances. Switzer has mostly contributed as a returner with Pittsburgh and Dallas, although he did have 36 catches with the Steelers in 2018.
Smallwood was one of the Eagles’ main running backs in 2018, but didn’t get too many touches with Washington last year. He’ll likely pop up somewhere else soon. Brooks Jr. was the Steelers’ sixth-round pick in this past draft, so he’s likely ticketed for the practice squad if he clears waivers.
McCullers has been with the Steelers the past six years so his is a significant departure even though the nose tackle only played 12 percent of the defensive snaps last season.
Steelers To Re-Sign DT Dan McCullers
The Steelers will re-sign defensive tackle Daniel McCullers to a two-year, $2.75MM deal, a source tells Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com (on Twitter). With that, the Steelers will have Big Dan back for a sixth season with the team, and possibly a seventh.
McCullers doesn’t play a ton, but the team likes having him around. An old-fashioned run-stuffing nose tackle, McCullers checks in at 352 pounds. He played only around 10% of the defensive snaps last year, and had five tackles with one sack while clogging up the occasional running lane.
A Tennessee product, the Steelers took McCullers in the sixth round of the draft back in 2014. McCullers barely played last year, and his most meaningful role was in 2016, when he played 17.5% of the defensive snaps. It’s not a bad chunk of change for a player used so sparingly.

- Steelers defensive tackle Dan McCullers has only compiled 27 tackles and 1.5 sacks since being selected in the sixth round of the 2014 draft. As Chris Adamski of TribLive.com writes, the 24-year-old isn’t guaranteed a roster spot, and his coaches seemingly echoed that sentiment. “Dan McCullers, he’s got to grow up,” said defensive line coach John Mitchell. “It’s time to make a move right now. This is going to be his fourth year. And usually in this league, after about four years, you have got to make a move. Or, either, you move somewhere else.” An injury to starter Javon Hargrave opened up first-team reps, but McCullers was reportedly passed in favor of L.T. Walton.
- Mike Preston of the Baltimore Sun believes there are several Ravens players who have to prove themselves this season if they want to stick around the NFL. The writer specifically points to a pair of fourth-year players, wideout Michael Campanaro and tight end Crockett Gillmore. Preston doesn’t believe the players need to become “superstars,” but they need to at least prove that they can contribute in some capacity.
- It has already been an offseason of changes for the Jets, who let go of veterans like Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker, Darrelle Revis, Nick Mangold, and David Harris. Darryl Slater of NJ.com takes a look at seven current Jets who could be released or traded over the next 12 months, including cornerback Buster Skrine, defensive ends Muhammad Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson, offensive guard James Carpenter, running backs Matt Forte and Bilal Powell, and defensive tackle Steve McLendon.
