Bills Sign CB Dontae Johnson
The Bills have signed cornerback Dontae Johnson, according to a press release. To make room, they’ve released defensive end Nate Orchard.
After spending the first four seasons of his career with the 49ers, Johnson joined the Seahawks and was projected to start. An offseason injury derailed those plans, however, and he was freed from his contract in late September. Johnson probably won’t get an opportunity to match his 2017 career-highs in tackles (77) and passes defended (seven), but he should see some playing time in Buffalo as the Bills deal with injuries in the secondary.
Orchard, a darling of this year’s “Hard Knocks” while with the Browns, possesses great speed but has yet to put it all together at the pro level. After roughly three weeks in Buffalo, Orchard will look to hook on elsewhere and realize his potential.

Seahawks To Release Dontae Johnson
The Seahawks will release cornerback Dontae Johnson from injured reserve today, Tom Pelissero of NFL.com tweets. Johnson was slated to start for Seattle, but a minor injury landed him on IR just prior to the season opener.
Johnson is now healthy, Pelissero hears, so he should be ready to join any club in need of cornerback help right away. Johnson started in all 16 games for the 49ers last year, so there should be a fair amount of interest in his services.
In 2017, Johnson finished with career-highs in tackles (77) and passes defended (seven). Pro Football Focus wasn’t all that fond of his performance, however, ranking him 118th among 121 eligible cornerbacks.
Johnson was expected to start at outside cornerback alongside Shaquill Griffin and slot specialist Justin Coleman, but the Seahawks have used Tre Flowers in his stead.
Seahawks To Place CB Dontae Johnson On IR
The day before their season opener, the Seahawks have lost a key defensive back. NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero reports (via Twitter) that the team will place cornerback Dontae Johnson on the injured reserve. The team will promote cornerback Akeem King from the practice squad to take the open roster spot.
Johnson was added to the injury report earlier this week. The injury was initially described as a hip issue, but coach Pete Carroll later described it as a groin strain. The organization wasn’t treating the injury like it was all that serious, although the cornerback was considered doubtful for tomorrow’s game in Denver.
After spending the first four seasons of his career with the 49ers, Johnson joined the Seahawks this offseason. The 26-year-old started all 16 games last season, finishing with career-highs in tackles (77) and passes defended (seven). Pro Football Focus wasn’t all that fond of his performance, ranking him 118th among 121 eligible cornerbacks.
Johnson was expected to start at cornerback alongside Shaquill Griffin and Justin Coleman. The team will likely turn to either veteran Neiko Thorpe or rookie Tre Flowers to fill in, although King could end up getting a look. The 2015 seventh-round joined the Seahawks organization last season, and he caught on with the team’s practice squad following this year’s preseason.
Seahawks To Sign CB Dontae Johnson
The Seahawks are signing cornerback Dontae Johnson, Mike Garafolo of NFL.com tweets. Johnson becomes the first significant free agent addition at cornerback for the Seahawks this year following an offseason of upheaval all around.
The Seahawks retained corner Justin Coleman this offseason via the second-round tender, but they’re looking to bolster the group after parting ways with Richard Sherman. Needless to say, Johnson is not a one-for-one replacement for Sherman (who is now with Johnson’s former team), but he will provide depth in an area of need.
Johnson started all 16 games for the Niners last year, but he didn’t necessarily play up to that billing. The 26-year-old ranked near the bottom of Football Outsiders’ yards allowed per pass and success rate. Meanwhile, he graded out as the fourth worst qualified corner in the NFL, per Pro Football Focus, as he placed 118th out of 121 possible players.
For now, the Seahawks project to start Justin Coleman and Shaquill Griffin at cornerback. Neiko Thorpe, Deandre Elliott, and Alex Carter are also slated to return as reserves.
