Colts Place DE Kemoko Turay On PUP List, Cut Roster To 53

Here are the players the Colts cut to slash their roster down to 53 players Saturday:

Turay’s PUP placement will shelve him for at least the season’s first six games. It is a concerning sign for the former second-round pick, who suffered a broken ankle last October. The Colts were counting on him to play a key edge-rushing role, potentially as the counterpart to starter Justin Houston. The team has not been connected to Jadeveon Clowney since March and also avoided investments in other available pass rushers this offseason.

Kelly spent time on Indianapolis’ practice squad last year and could well end up there again. The Colts recently signed Hunt, a former Seahawks backup/spot starter, and added Grimble this offseason. Both Grimble and his ex-Steelers teammate, Roosevelt Nix, failed to make the Colts’ roster. However, despite the players’ extensive experience, each could be placed on Indianapolis’ 16-man practice squad this year. Teams are permitted to carry six practice squad players with unlimited experience.

Colts DE Kemoko Turay Done For Year

Colts defensive end Kemoko Turay is done for the season, Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL.com (on Twitter) hear. Turay’s broken ankle suffered against the Chiefs on Sunday night will land him on injured reserve, allowing the Colts to replace him on the roster.

The severity of the injury was immediately apparent to everyone on the scene and watching at home after he was carted off the field. Turay, 24, will now focus on recovery and building on an impressive 2018 rookie season in which he notched four sacks as a part-timer.

The Colts, meanwhile, will move forward with starters Jabaal Sheard and Justin Houston, plus backup DEs Al-Quadin Muhammad and Ben Banogu. It’s possible that they will also add another edge rusher to the mix during their Week 6 bye.

The Colts will resume action on Oct. 20 against the Texans, without Turay.

Colts Sign First-Round Pick Quenton Nelson

The Colts have officially signed the bulk of their draft class. On Friday, the team announced deals with the following picks: 

The Colts wound up with an oversized draft class of eleven players, but they have only two rookies left to sign. Once second round linebacker Darius Leonard and second round guard Braden Smith put pen to paper, they’ll be done.

Nelson was widely regarded as one of the best overall talents in this year’s draft, but the early run on quarterbacks helped guide him to the Colts at No. 6. Frankly, that worked out great for the Colts as they desperately need to protect quarterback Andrew Luck this season. The QB fever allowed Chris Ballard to land this year’s top rated offensive lineman in the draft while adding two 2018 second-round picks and a 2019 second-round choice from the Jets as he moved down from No. 3 to No. 6. It’s too early to grade any team’s draft, but everyone can agree that the Colts did well for themselves in terms of value.

Nelson, a 6’5″, 235-pound lineman, boasts tremendous power and the ability to act as a double team blocker. Many feel that Nelson is one of the best bets to succeed out of this year’s top 10.

“He’s so unique because he’s big, but he’s not fat. He’s one of the best run blockers I’ve ever evaluated, but he’s not a liability in pass protection like Mike Iupati is,” one NFC team personnel executive told NFL.com before the draft. “He’s also an alpha who can bring and ass-kicking mindset into your position room.”
