Eagles Place Sidney Jones On Reserve/NFI List, Trim Roster
The Eagles have placed rookie cornerback Sidney Jones on the reserve/NFI list, per a team announcement. Consequently, Jones won’t be eligible to practice or play during the first six weeks of the season.
Although Jones suffered a torn Achilles during his pro day in March, the Eagles still used a second-round pick on the former Washington standout. Jones looked like a first-rounder in the making after a stellar three-year Huskies career that saw him intercept eight passes. When the Eagles signed Jones, they inserted language in his contract that will pay him his full 2017 base salary even if he spends the season on the NFI list.
Along with the Jones transaction, the Eagles announced that they’ve waived 14 players to bring their roster to 70:
- LB Don Cherry
- DT Winston Craig
- WR Rashard Davis
- TE Anthony Denham
- QB Dane Evans
- LB Carlos Fields
- CB Aaron Grymes
- DE Jake Metz
- C Tyler Orlosky
- T Victor Salako
- LB Christian Tago
- WR Paul Turner (injury settlement)
- DT Gabe Wright
- TE Adam Zaruba
Eagles Release CB Ron Brooks
The Eagles have released cornerback Ron Brooks, the club announced today. In related moves, Philadelphia has signed linebackers Carlos Fields and Christian Tago and waived cornerback Mitchell White.
Brooks, 28, followed defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz from Buffalo to Philadelphia prior to the 2016 campaign, inking a three-year deal with the Eagles. Hampered by a quadriceps injury, Brooks only appeared in six total games before being placed on injured reserve. In that limited sample size (235 defensive snaps), Brooks earned poor marks from Pro Football Focus, which assigned him a 40.9 grade.
Brooks had already agreed to a pay cut earlier this year that slashed his 2017 base salary from $1.85MM to $1MM and changed his 2018 season into an option year. Instead, the Eagles will now pick up $1MM in 2017 cap space and incur $250K in dead money. Another $250K dead cap charge will appear on Philadelphia’s books in 2018.
The Eagles have made several trades to acquire cornerback depth this offseason, picking up Ronald Darby from the Bills and Dexter McDougle from the Jets, but the unit is still relatively thin overall. Darby projects as a starter alongside Jalen Mills, while free agent signing Patrick Robinson now appears to have won Philadelphia’s nickel corner job, as Adam Caplan of ESPN.com tweets. Second-round rookie Sidney Jones is also on the roster but may get a late start as he recovers from a torn Achilles, while other Eagles corners include rookie Rasul Douglas, Aaron Grymes, and C.J. Smith.

Here are the minor moves NFL teams made on New Year’s Eve.
- Another Saints cornerback will head to IR, with the team placing Ken Crawley on the season-ending list, Nick Underhill of The Advocate tweets. Crawley will join Delvin Breaux, P.J. Williams, Damian Swann and Kyle Wilson as IR-stationed corners in New Orleans. The team promoted cornerback Taveze Calhoun, a rookie UDFA, from its practice squad to fill the roster spot. Crawley started in five games for the Saints this season.
- The Bears promoted Josh Shirley from their practice squad, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports (on Twitter). Chicago will be without Leonard Floyd and Pernell McPhee in its Week 17 game against Minnesota. Shirley resided on the workout circuit for much of this season before catching on with the Bears’ practice squad earlier this month. The 24-year-old UDFA edge defender played in five games for the Buccaneers last year.
- The Vikings promoted wide receiver Isaac Fruechte from their practice squad, Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. Minnesota moved safety Andrew Sendejo to IR (Twitter link, via Tomasson) to make room for the UDFA second-year man. Both Stefon Diggs and Laquon Treadwell are doubtful for the Vikes’ season finale, creating the need for some pass-catching depth. A knee issue will end Sendejo’s season prematurely. He finished his seventh NFL campaign with 66 tackles and a career-high two interceptions.
- It appears the Chargers are going to finish with an even 20 players on IR this season after the team placed cornerback Craig Mager on the season-ending list, Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports (on Twitter). Inside linebacker Carlos Fields received a promotion from the practice squad as a result.

Redskins Cut Jenkins, Paulsen, Down To 53
Cullen Jenkins‘ short tenure in Washington has come to an end. After having signed with the Redskins earlier this week, the veteran defensive end has been cut by the team, according to Mike Jones of The Washington Post (via Twitter). The 35-year-old has been in the league since 2004, and he started 14 games for the Giants in 2015.
Logan Paulsen (also reported by Jones) is another notable cut by the Redskins. The tight end has been on the squad since 2010, although a toe injury kept him off the field last season. Entering 2016, he found himself buried on the tight end depth chart behind Jordan Reed, Niles Paul, and Vernon Davis. The 29-year-old compiled 53 catches, 575 yards, and four touchdowns between the 2012 and 2013 season.
Rookie Matt Ioannidis wasn’t necessarily expected to play a large role on this year’s Redskins team, but most expected the fifth-round pick to make the squad. The defensive end was attempting to switch to defensive tackle, writes Jones, but the rookie “struggled with consistency.” The team ultimately opted for veteran Kedric Golston and undrafted rookie Anthony Lanier. Jones tweets that the defensive lineman should pass through waivers and land back on the Redskins’ practice squad.
The Redskins are now down to the 53-man limit several hours before the deadline. Here is the full list of the players that have been cut:
- DL Cullen Jenkins

Minor NFL Transactions: 12/5/15
Here are Saturday’s minor transactions from around the NFL, including practice squad moves:
- The Falcons have released an injury settlement with tackle Lamar Holmes, releasing him from the reserve/PUP list, tweets Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. Holmes’ four-year rookie deal had been set to expire at season’s end, but since he was on track to spend all year on the PUP list due to a foot injury, his contract would’ve tolled, keeping him on Atlanta’s roster. Instead, he’ll reach the open market a little early.
- To fill the roster spot formerly held by Trent Robinson, whose release was noted below, Washington promoted linebacker Carlos Fields from its practice squad, Tarik El-Bashir of CSNMidAtlantic.com reports. The 25-year-old Fields should serve as depth for a depleted Washington linebacking corps Monday night, with Mason Foster and Will Compton expected to start. Perry Riley remains out, and Keenan Robinson is questionable, so Fields figures to see extensive special teams time.
Earlier updates:
- Darius Jennings joins the Browns‘ active roster after the team promoted the wide receiver from their practice squad. Cleveland cut linebacker Darrian Miller to make room, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports (on Twitter). A former Virginia wideout, Jennings caught on with the Browns after a minicamp tryout this May. Miller played in two games as a backup after spending nine weeks on the team’s practice squad prior to his promotion.
- The Dolphins signed defensive end Jordan Williams from their practice squad and cut tight end Brandon Williams to make room, James Walker of ESPN.com tweets. Initially signing with the Jets as a rookie UDFA this offseason, Jordan Williams signed to the Dolphins’ practice squad in October.
- The Giants waived cornerback Leon McFadden and signed linebacker James Morris to take his spot on the 53-man roster, Dan Graziano of ESPN.com reports (on Twitter). A 24-year-old inside backer, Morris played in three games with the Giants this season after spending time with the Patriots in 2014.
- Washington waived/injured safety Trent Robinson, per Master Tesfatsion of the Washington Post (via Twitter). Robinson was backing up Dashon Goldson and Kyshoen Jarrett previously. If Robinson clears waivers, he’ll land on Washington’s IR, per Jay Gruden (via Tarik El-Bashir of CSNWashington.com, on Twitter).
- The Bills have promoted running back Michael Gillislee to the active roster, reports Joe Buscaglia of WKBW in Buffalo (via Twitter). The former fifth-round pick hasn’t played in the NFL since a three-game stint with the Dolphins in 2013. To make room on the roster, the team has waived offensive lineman Gabe Ikard. The Oklahoma product has only made three appearances this season, although Buscaglia believes his absence will lead to Ryan Groy being active for the first time.
- With the Bengals dealing with a banged up secondary, the team has promoted cornerback Troy Hill from the practice squad, reports ESPN’s Coley Harvey (via Twitter). To make room on the roster, the team waived cornerback Chris Lewis-Harris, who was injured during last week’s victory over the Rams.
