This Date In Transactions History: Lions Extend Theo Riddick

On this date in 2016, the Lions finalized a three-year, $12.75MM deal with running back Theo Riddick. At the time, the deal positioned Riddick as one of the higher-paid tailbacks in the NFL. Today, the deal serves as a reminder of how quickly things can change in football.

Riddick, who had just turned 25, was coming off of a breakout year. He hauled in 80 passes – the most of any running back in 2015 – for 697 yards and three touchdowns. The Lions didn’t want to let the dual-threat RB get anywhere near free agency, so they locked him up through 2019. With Riddick and the speedy Ameer Abdullah in the fold, the Lions figured that they were well-set in the backfield.

Riddick kicked off his new deal with 728 all-purpose yards in ten games and set a new career-high with 3.9 yards per tote. And, naturally, he showed his soft hands with 53 grabs. Then, a wrist injury halted his season in November. Riddick returned in 2017, and stayed healthy, but the Lions’ ground game was lacking. In 2018, rookie Kerryon Johnson emerged as a total game-changer, and that changed the course of Riddick’s career. After Riddick logged just 40 carries, the Lions no longer felt that he was worth his contract. In July of 2019, they dropped the 27-year-old to save less than $4MM against the salary cap.

Today, Riddick finds himself on the fringe. After missing the Raiders’ final cut, he’s waiting for his next opportunity on Jon Gruden‘s practice squad.

Lions Set Initial Practice Squad

The Lions have announced their initial practice squad in a release, with Detroit adding 16 players to the unit:

Blough was an undrafted rookie from Purdue last year who ended up starting five games after injuries to Matthew Stafford and Jeff Driskel. The offseason addition of Chase Daniel made Blough expendable, but he’ll serve as the third quarterback.

Wiggins has been in the league since 2012, and he has extensive starting experience. He’s started 13 games for Detroit over the past two years, and will probably be the first guy getting called up if there are offensive line injuries. Williams carried the ball 49 times for Indy last year, but he’ll have a tough time getting any snaps now that the Lions have also added Adrian Peterson.

Lions Sign Adrian Peterson

Adrian Peterson is back in the NFC North. After being released by Washington on Friday, the longtime Viking and future Hall-of-Fame running back is signing with the Lions, as veteran NFL reporter Josina Anderson was first to report (Twitter link).

Per Adam Schefter of ESPN.com, Peterson’s deal with Detroit will be a one-year pact worth a minimum of $1.05MM, though there are incentives to push that number a bit higher (Twitter link). Sources tell Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk that the deal will max out at $2.3MM and that the incentives are based upon yardage and touchdowns.

Although the Lions’ RB room is crowded, it also has a few question marks. The club selected Kerryon Johnson in the second round of the 2018 draft, and while he has shown flashes of promise, he has missed significant time over his first two years in the league due to knee injuries. Detroit added one of the best RB prospects in this year’s draft in Georgia product D’Andre Swift, but Swift missed nearly two weeks of training camp with a knee injury.

So there is definitely a possibility that Peterson could play a significant role, at least early on in the season as Swift tries to make up for lost time. Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press believes Peterson will end up poaching more of Johnson’s expected work than Swift’s, including, perhaps, goal-line touches.

With the Lions, Peterson will reunite with Darrell Bevell, Detroit’s offensive coordinator who served in the same capacity with the Vikings during Peterson’s first four years in Minnesota (when he piled up four Pro Bowl nods and two First Team All-Pro selections). As Peterson told Anderson, “[the Lions are] giving me an opportunity to play. I know Coach Bevell from my days in Minnesota. Ultimately I feel comfortable going there and helping them to get better.”

Peterson, 35, has rushed for 14,216 yards, putting him roughly 1,000 yards behind Barry Sanders for fourth on the NFL’s all-time career list. He might not be the player he once was, but he did average a solid 4.2 yards per carry over the 2018-19 campaigns with Washington. Between him, Johnson, and Swift, the Lions should be able to improve upon the 103.1 rushing yards per game they mustered in 2019, which put them near the bottom third of the league.

Lions Cut RB Jonathan Williams

Jonathan Williams won’t make the Lions roster, but it doesn’t sound like he’ll have to hunt for yet another NFL gig. NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reports (via Twitter) that Detroit has cut the veteran running back. However, Williams is expected to land on their practice squad.

Williams has bounced around the NFL since being selected in the fifth round of the 2016 draft. The Arkansas product has had stints with the Bills, Broncos, Saints, Colts, and Lions. He had the best season of his career in 2019, compiling 235 rushing yards and one touchdown on 49 carries. He also added another five catches for 59 yards. That ended up earning him a contract with Detroit, who signed him in mid-August.

However, considering his limited time in camp, it was always going to be tough for Williams to make the roster. Kerryon Johnson, D’Andre Swift, Jason Huntley, and Bo Scarbrough (along with fullback Jason Cabinda) always seemed like shoo-ins to make the final roster.

  • Taylor Decker, LT (Lions): Four-year, $60MM extension. Includes $7.5MM signing bonus (paid out in 17 installments in 2020). Salaries: $6.85MM (2020), $13MM fully guaranteed (2021), $14.75MM fully guaranteed (2022), $13.7MM (2023), $12.95MM (2024). $250K workout bonuses (2022-2024), $500 roster bonus (2024). Lions, Kenny Golladay Nearing Deal?

Now that Taylor Decker‘s contract is squared away, the Lions are turning their attention to Kenny Golladay. The Lions are nearing agreement with the wide receiver on a brand new extension, according to a league source who spoke with PFT’s Mike Florio. However, there’s conflicting word from NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport (Twitter link) who hears that nothing is imminent.

Earlier this year, it was believed that Golladay would actually be prioritized ahead of Decker, so it stands to reason that there’s some momentum on that front as the season draws near. Currently set to make $2.133MM in 2020, Golladay is clearly due for a pay bump. Mega extensions have been rare in the current climate, but Golladay could see an average annual value of at least $17MM. On the higher end, he could command something similar to what the Cowboys gave to Amari Cooper – a five-year, $100MM contract with $60MM guaranteed.

When Matthew Stafford was on the field, things were clicking for Golladay. He finished out with eleven touchdown and 1,190 yards, numbers that would have been stronger had Stafford been healthy throughout the year. Golladay also averaged 18.3 yards per catch, a new career best that ranked fourth in the NFL.
