Sunday Transactions: AFC South
Listed below are the Sunday roster moves for the four AFC South teams. Following the 53-man roster cutdown deadline yesterday, many teams will make slight tweaks to their rosters, claiming players off waivers or signing guys who clear waivers. Those transactions are noted below.
Additionally, as of 11:00am CT today, teams can begin constructing their 10-man practice squads. For the 2014 and 2015 seasons, changes were made to practice squad rules that allow teams to carry eight players instead of 10, and the eligibility requirements for those extra two spots were also loosened. You can check out our glossary entry on practice squads to brush up on those changes, as well as all the other guidelines that govern the 10-man units, whose players practice with the team but aren’t eligible to suit up on Sundays.

- Jamell Fleming, CB
- Sherrod Martin, S
- Nate Stupar, LB
- Kerry Taylor, WR
Since Ace Sanders is headed for the reserve-suspended list, the team was able to keep guard Tyler Shatley – who was reported below as having been cut – on its 53-man roster, tweets Oehser.
FRIDAY, 4:01pm: In addition to confirming the cuts noted below, the Jaguars have announced a slew of additional roster moves. Via John Oehser of Jaguars.com, here’s the full list, which reduces the team’s active roster count to 57 players:
Cut:
- Cody Booth, OT
- Chad Bumphis, WR
- Deandre Coleman, DL
- Ricky Havili-Heimuli, DT
- Craig Loston, S
- Drew Nowak, G
- Kasey Redfern, K/P
- Gerald Rivers, DE
- Tyler Shatley, G
- D.J. Tialavea, TE
- Marcus Whitfield, LB
Waived-injured:
- Brandon Barden, TE (groin)
Place on injured reserve:
- Tandon Doss, WR (ankle)
- Rashaad Reynolds, CB (hand)
3:33pm: The Jaguars have started the process of reducing the number of players on their active roster from 75 to 53, as they look to finalize their regular-season roster in time for tomorrow’s deadline. - Ricky Stanzi (QB) (via O’Halloran on Twitter, 3:19pm)
Minor Moves: Friday Night
As our transactions log shows, it’s been a busy day for roster moves around the NFL, and tomorrow will be even more hectic, as teams cut their rosters down to 53 active players in advance of the 3:00pm CT deadline. As we look forward to what should be a fun Saturday, let’s round up a few more odds and ends from Friday’s transactions wire….
- Kicker John Potter (Dolphins) and defensive back Devin Smith (Steelers) have been removed from their team’s respective injured lists with injury settlements, tweets Wilson.
- Two Raiders have posted the news of their own waiving via social media: DE Jack Crawford (via Instagram) and TE Jake Murphy (via Twitter) each indicated they had been cut by Oakland.
Earlier Updates:
- According to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun (Twitter links), the Cowboys waived a pair of players today, parting ways with wide receiver Jamar Newsome and running back D.J. Adams.
- The Dolphins began trimming their roster from 75 players to 53 today, informing tight end Kyle Miller that he’s being cut, reports Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald.
- Packers tackle Aaron Adams has suffered a torn ACL and MCL, and will be placed on injured reserve, tweets Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com. Adams would have been in contention for a spot at the back end of the 53-man roster had he remained healthy.
- The Lions and 49ers both freed up some cap space by restructuring the contracts of safety Glover Quin and defensive lineman Ray McDonald, respectively, per reports by Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com and Tom Pelissero of USA Today (Twitter link). We don’t have the specific details yet on either move, but they were likely simple restructures, converting a portion of the players’ base salaries into signing bonuses.
- The following players were cut off their respective teams’ injured reserve lists with injury settlements, according to reports from John Oesher of Jaguars.com, Jeff Legwold of ESPN.com, and Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press (all Twitter links): Defensive end David Carter (Jaguars), linebacker Jamar Chaney (Broncos), and safety DeJon Gomes (Lions).
South Notes: Texans, Jags, Falcons, Saints
The Texans won’t keep us waiting in suspense. Most of the cuts that have to be made by tomorrow afternoon will actually take place today, a team source tells James Palmer of CSNHouston.com (on Twitter). The latest from the AFC and NFC South..
- Center Mike Brewster, who began training camp as the team’s starter, knows he might have played his last game with the Jaguars, writes Michael DiRocco of ESPN.com. The Jaguars gave Jacques McClendon and sixth-round pick Luke Bowanko reps over Brewster in the third preseason game at Detroit. Last night, Brewster bounced a snap past quarterback Ricky Stanzi.
- Even though undrafted rookie receiver Geraldo Boldewijn suffered a hamstring injury, fellow UDFA WR Bernard Reedy is not a slam dunk to make the Falcons‘ roster, writes Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com. Reedy is lightning fast, but he doesn’t fill Atlanta’s need for quality special teams guys. Veterans Eric Weems and Courtney Roby are more likely to be the guys behind Julio Jones, Roddy White, Harry Douglas, and Devin Hester.
- Even though Saints receivers Nick Toon and Robert Meachem haven’t made a great case to stick on the roster, they should survive tomorrow’s cut-down, writes Larry Holder of The Times-Picayune. Between Brandon Coleman, Seantavious Jones, and Charles Hawkins two of the three seem likely to land on the practice squad.
- It may not be ideal to keep three quarterbacks on a roster, but Mike Triplett of ESPN.com projects that the Saints will keep Ryan Griffin as their third signal caller behind Drew Brees and Luke McCown.
Minor Moves: Tuesday
Tonight’s minor moves..
- The Raiders announced that they have claimed kicker Giorgio Tavecchio via waivers from the Lions. In a corresponding move, Oakland waived kicker Kevin Goessling. Tavecchio will likely serve as insurance in the event that Sebastian Janikowski isn’t ready to go in Week 1.
- The Bills have claimed punter/kicker Jordan Gay off waivers from the Panthers, according to Mike Rodak of ESPN.com (on Twitter).
- According to the NFL transactions wire, the Seahawks have waived linebacker Marcus Dowtin and claimed center Patrick Lewis off waivers from the Jaguars, tweets Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times. Dowtin saw three games of action with the Giants in 2013 before being released in March.
- Safety Ty Zimmerman, receiver Andy Tanner, and tackle Ty Nsekhe were added to the Saints‘ injured reserve amidst today’s roster moves, tweets Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post.
- Rams linebacker Pat Schiller reverted to the club’s injured reserve after clearing waivers, according to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun (on Twitter).
Latest AFC Moves: Bills, Raiders, Browns, Jags
A handful of AFC clubs have announced roster moves this morning as they look to reduce their rosters to 75 players. Teams now have less than five hours until 2014’s first cutdown deadline arrives. Here’s the latest:
- Linebacker Kiko Alonso has been moved to the Bills‘ reserve/non-football injury list, per Adam Caplan of ESPN.com (via Twitter). Buffalo had already reduced its roster to 75 players, so the team actually has room to make an addition today, if it so chooses.
- Although the Raiders hadn’t been expected to make an official decision on D.J. Hayden‘s status to open the season until the weekend, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports that the club has indeed decided to place the cornerback on the PUP list, meaning he’ll be sidelined for at least the first six weeks of the regular season.
- The Browns have placed a pair of players – offensive lineman Michael Bowie and linebacker Darius Eubanks – on injured reserve, the team announced today (Twitter link). Both players underwent shoulder surgeries earlier in August. Cleveland will have to make one more roster move to cut down from 76 players to 75.
- Jaguars cornerback Aaron Colvin has also landed on the reserve/non-football injury list, tweets John Oesher of Jaguars.com. The move puts Jacksonville’s roster at 75 active players.
Jaguars Cut 14 Players
2:26pm: The Jags have also waived WR Lamaar Thomas and RB Terrance Cobb, bringing their roster count to 76, tweets John Oehser of Jaguars.com.
MONDAY, 9:08am: The Jaguars have also waived/injured CB Deion Belue, per O’Halloran (on Twitter). Jacksonville’s roster count now sits at 78.
SUNDAY, 3:21PM: In anticipation of roster cutdowns, the Jaguars waived 11 players, according to Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times-Union:
- Josh Hull, LB
- David Carter, DT (injured)
- Charley Hughlett, LS
- Patrick Lewis, C
- Antoine Caldwell, C
- Mike Harris, CB
- Kenny Shaw, WR
- Ramses Barden, WR
- Joe Young, S
- Harvey Unga, FB
- Allen Bradford, LB
Harris, a former seventh-rounder, started seven games over the past two years. As O’Halloran writes, just five of former general manager Gene Smith’s 26 draft picks still remain on the roster after this most recent purge. Jacksonville still needs to make four more cuts before Tuesday’s deadline.
AFC Notes: McPhee, Hurns, Amaro, Mack
Ravens outside linebacker Pernell McPhee is a player to watch in tonight’s third preseason game against the Redskins, says Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun: “Healthy this year after having no surgeries this offseason — unlike previous years when he’s undergone groin and knee procedures — the Ravens’ outside linebacker has been one of the best pass rushers in the NFL this preseason with one sack and five quarterback hurries. McPhee appears to have recaptured his rookie form from 2011 when he finished second on the Ravens with six sacks.” Meanwhile, ESPN’s Jaymison Hensley points out that McPhee is in the final year of his rookie deal, meaning the Ravens should benefit from healthy, motivated player seeking a contract extension.
Here’s a roundup of more links from around the AFC:
- T.J. Graham is the Bills’ top “bubble” player, says ESPN’s Mike Rodak: “With six receivers already considered locks for the 53-man roster, Graham might need an injury to make the cut. However, he can make a strong push for a job with another team with a good outing Saturday. Graham saw more time with the first-team offense as training camp progressed, and with Sammy Watkins not expected to play Saturday, Graham should have chances to catch passes from starting quarterback EJ Manuel. The Bills will need to make a decision on Graham shortly after Saturday’s game. Would they release him early and allow him time to catch on elsewhere? Or do they hold onto him and try to get him back on their practice squad, now that he is eligible under the NFL’s new rules?”
- With Donald Stephenson facing a four-game suspension and Joe Mays injured, the competition for replacement snaps at right tackle and inside linebacker is something to watch in the Chiefs’ third preseason game, writes Terez Paylor in the KC Star.
- The Broncos are in need of a punt returner following the torn ACL suffered by Jordan Norwood. Isaiah Burse will get the first chance to claim the role, according to an AP story.
- The Jaguars used a pair of second-round picks on receivers, but undrafted free agent Allen Hurns has been the best rookie in camp, writes Hays Carlyon in the Florida Times-Union: “The question now isn’t if Hurns makes the 53-man roster. He’s a virtual lock, a difficult position for an undrafted rookie to work his way to after three games. . . Hurns has put himself in position to perhaps start opposite Cecil Shorts when the Jaguars open the regular season at Philadelphia on Sept. 7.”
- Jace Amaro is impressing Rex Ryan. Speaking about the rookie tight end, Ryan told the New York Post’s Brian Costello, “I told you guys he reminds me of [Mike] Ditka the more I see him. The kid gets better and better and better. That’s the thing you love about this guy.” Amaro had four catches and a touchdown last night against the Giants.
- Raiders outside linebacker Khalil Mack looked worthy of the No. 5 overall selection last night, according to Marcus Thompson II of the San Jose Mercury-News.
- Raiders running back Kory Sheets (Achilles) is out for the season. Sheets broke the news himself via Twitter. As a result, Latavius Murray will begin the season as the team’s primary kick returner.
- A pair of young veterans — Dontay Moch and Orson Charles — could be candidates for the Bengals’ practice squad, speculates ESPN’s Cole Harvey, who says “coaches have grown tired of the Charles experiment and are all-in on undrafted rookie free agent Ryan Hewitt.”
Poll: Which Rookie WR Will Have Best Season?
They say there are some things you can’t teach in sports. One of them is size. Another is the ability to make a jaw-dropping one-handed catch after tripping just one second prior. Bills rookie wide receiver Sammy Watkins is lacking in the first department but he’s got the latter down pat.
With top-level speed, excellent agility, and soft hands, Watkins was almost universally regarded as the top WR talent in the 2014 class. So, he’s a lock to win this poll, right? Maybe not. Second-year quarterback EJ Manuel boasts a strong arm but he’s far from elite and one has to wonder how many quality balls he can deliver to Manuel. The Clemson product is also working through a rib injury which could possibly hamper him to start the season.
Moving further down the draft board, there are plenty of other wide receivers with an opportunity to make a name for themselves in year one. The Panthers overhauled their entire receiving corps this offseason and many are expecting big things out of FSU’s Kelvin Benjamin. In New Orleans, many are skeptical of what the once solid Marques Colston can do and the hype around Brandin Cooks is reaching a fever pitch. And, without DeSean Jackson, Jordan Matthews could see a lot of balls thrown his way in Philadelphia. Beyond those guys, there are even more promising WR’s from this year’s receiver-heavy draft. Who among them will have the best 2014 season?
Which Rookie WR Will Have The Best 2014?
-
Brandin Cooks (Saints) 18% (142)
-
Jordan Matthews (Eagles) 17% (138)
-
