AFC East Notes: Pats, Cannon, Revis, Dolphins
Under the terms of his extension with the Patriots, right tackle Marcus Cannon will earn $19.8MM in cash over the first three years of the deal, which, as Mike Reiss of ESPN.com notes (Twitter link), is often a key metric in contract analysis. So while Cannon’s new pact won’t approach that of Lane Johnson, who remains the highest-paid right tackle in the NFL, Cannon is still earning a top-tier RT contract through the three-year cash lens. Recent right tackles that have signed comparable deals include Mitchell Schwartz ($19.56MM in the first three years), Bryan Bulaga ($18.96MM), and Joe Barksdale ($16.5MM).
Here’s more from the AFC East, including another look at the Cannon extension:
- Negotiations between the Patriots and Cannon could have been greased by the recent agreement between the Falcons and fellow right tackle Ryan Schraeder, tweets Jason Fitzgerald of Over the Cap. Schraeder reached a five-year, $31.5MM deal with Atlanta last week that included $7.5MM in full guarantees. Cannon, meanwhile, scored $1MM more in total value, and while initial reports peg his guarantee at $14.5MM, that figure almost certainly refers to injury-only guarantees. As Fitzgerald notes (Twitter link), the Schraeder/Cannon extensions could place a cap on the right tackle market, and it will likely be up to a free agent to break through that barrier. Upcoming free agent right tackles include Riley Reiff, Ricky Wagner, and Sebastion Vollmer.
- The Jets have mismanaged the late-career struggles of cornerback Darrelle Revis, argues Fitzgerald in a full article for OTC. Because Revis’ 2017 guarantee is in the form of base salary (not prorated signing bonus), New York can’t cut him before the first day of free agency without the dead money accelerating onto the 2016 cap. As such, the club has little option than to carry his full cap charge until the 2017 league year begins, and then release him in order to save cap space.
- The Patriots‘ recent move to claim defensive tackle Darius Kilgo off waivers could indicate that the verdict of Alan Branch’s appeal of his four-game suspension is coming soon, Ryan Hannable of WEEI.com writes. Kilgo is a run stopper in the middle, which is Branch’s strong suit, so New England could be bracing for the impending loss of Branch.
- Dolphins tight end Jordan Cameron is uncertain about his football future, as he tells Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post that his status is “up in the air right now.” Cameron, 28, was ruled out for the year after suffering the fourth reported concussion of his career. Those repeated brain injuries could force Cameron to hang up his cleats after a six-year career.
- The Dolphins worked out wide receivers Da’Ron Brown, Marcus Johnson, Jay Lee, and Corey Washington today, according to Howard Balzer of BalzerFootball.com (Twitter link). Miami pass-catcher DeVante Parker is day-to-day with a back injury, so the club is likely just looking for depth.

Falcons’ Charles Godfrey Retires
Falcons safety Charles Godfrey announced his retirement Wednesday after eight NFL seasons, according to D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Godfrey, a career-long member of the NFC South, spent last season with the Falcons and re-signed with them in March on a one-year deal. However, a change of heart will end his football career at the age of 30.
Godfrey entered the league with the Panthers, who chose him out of Iowa in the third round of the 2008 draft. The 5-foot-11, 210-pounder went on to have a handful of productive years in Carolina, where he totaled 95 regular-season appearances, 75 starts, 11 interceptions, eight forced fumbles and three sacks. In Godfrey’s best statistical season, 2010, he piled up career highs in tackles (84), picks (five) and starts (16). His tenure with the Panthers ended in 2014 after they released him, and he then caught on with rival Atlanta. Godfrey appeared in eight games and picked up 10 tackles with the Falcons last season.
With Godfrey off their roster, the Falcons added a pair of offensive players – wide receiver Corey Washington and tight end Arthur Lynch – on Wednesday, per Ledbetter. Washington’s sole NFL playing experience came as a Giant in 2014, when he caught five passes for 52 yards and a touchdown. Lynch was a fifth-round pick of Miami in 2014, but he hasn’t appeared in a game yet.
Minor NFL Transactions: 6/17/16
Here are today’s minor transactions from around the NFL. We’ll make sure to keep this updated as more moves come in…
- The Bills have signed offensive tackle Justin Renfrow and waived/injured safety Phillip Thomas, per Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News (Twitter links). Renfrow, who tried out for the Bills during their minicamp, will now join his fifth NFL team since going undrafted from Miami in 2014. The Bills are the third organization for Thomas, who was the Redskins’ fourth-round pick in 2013. Thomas’ only action in the league came when he appeared in eight games (four starts) as a member of the 2014 Redskins.
- The Lions have waived wideout Corey Washington from the injured reserve, tweets ESPN’s Michael Rothstein. The former undrafted free agent out of Newberry College tweaked his hamstring during OTAs, reports Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press (via Twitter). The 24-year-old has five career catches for 52 yards and one touchdown.
- The Jets have signed receiver Kyle Williams, tweets Brian Costello of the New York Post. To make room on the roster, the team cut wideout Quenton Bundrage. Williams, who auditioned for the Jets during minicamp, has 47 career catches, although he hasn’t seen the field since the 2013 season. The 27-year-old ruptured his achilles last season while playing for the Broncos, although he stuck around long enough to win a Super Bowl ring. Bundrage was an undrafted rookie out of Iowa State.
Minor NFL Transactions: 6/13/16
Today’s minor moves:
- Cornerbacks Isaiah Frey and Dax Swanson signed with the Cowboys, as Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times tweets. Both players tried out for Dallas last week and apparently made a good impression.
- The Bills have signed offensive lineman Chris Martin to a one-year contract, according to agent Brett Tessler (Twitter link). Martin, 26, has been a member of seven NFL teams and spent time on the Bills’ practice squad last season.
- After being waived by the Cowboys, cornerback Terrance Mitchell will latch on with the other NFL club in Texas, as the Texans have claimed him off waivers, reports Mark Berman of FOX26 (Twitter link).
- The Lions waived wide receiver Austin Willis and signed defensive back Keith Lewis today, as Dave Birkett of The Detroit Free Press tweets.
- The Chargers cut safety Matt Daniels from injured reserve, per Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle (Twitter link). the two sides presumably reached an injury settlement.
- The Chiefs have signed former Akron defensive back Bryce Cheek (Akron) while the Rams have inked former San Diego State long snapper Jeff Overbaugh (San Diego State), Howard Balzer of USA Today Sports tweets.
- Tight end Michael Williams (Patriots), cornerback Brandon McGee (Cowboys), and receiver Corey Washington (Lions) all reverted to injured reserve after clearing waivers, according to Balzer (Twitter link).
Minor NFL Transactions: 6/10/16
Today’s minor moves:
- The Lions have waived wide receiver Corey Washington with an injury designation, reports ESPN’s Michael Rothstein. Washington, who caught five passes with the Giants in 2014, spent last season on the Lions’ practice squad.
- The Patriots have waived/injured tight end Michael Williams, according to Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com (Twitter link). Williams, who suffered a torn ACL on Wednesday, will revert to IR if he clears waivers.
- The Chiefs (Twitter link) announced that they have signed defensive back Bryce Cheek and waived safety Peni Vea.
- The Cowboys announced that they have waived cornerback Terrance Mitchell, who had one of their two interceptions by cornerbacks last season. The move is slightly surprising because Jason Garrett spoke highly of Mitchell earlier in the offseason, ESPN.com’s Todd Archer observes (Twitter link).
- The Cowboys also waived cornerback Brandon McGee with an injury designation.
