NFL Workout Updates: 9/24/18
Today’s workout updates are below. There were some notable names, including veteran quarterback Landry Jones, who was released by the Steelers at final cuts.
Cleveland Browns
- DTs Josh Banks, Henry Mondeaux, Aziz Shittu; TEs Pharaoh Brown, Donnie Ernsberger; LBs Obum Gwacham, Calvin Munson, Jacob Pugh; DEs Anthony Lanier, Damontre Moore; CB Kalan Reed
Indianapolis Colts
- WR Reggie Davis; S Marwin Evans; CB D.J. Killings; DE Cameron Malveaux; OTs Rees Odhiambo, William Poehls, De’Ondre Wesley
New England Patriots
- QB Landry Jones; CB David Amerson; WR Dontrelle Inman
New York Jets
- OL Isaiah Battle, Austin Pasztor; LBs Gimel President, Aaron Wallace; WR Ka’Raun White
Looks like the Browns are searching for defensive help, working out a slew of players on that side of the ball. Jones working out for the Patriots is interesting, as he isn’t really young enough to be seen as a developmental project, and Brian Hoyer is entrenched as Tom Brady‘s backup.
Eagles Cut Down To 53
The Eagles’ receiving corps became a bit younger on Saturday. Two veterans brought in as possible depth pieces — Markus Wheaton and Kamar Aiken — were informed they will be released.
So was potential secondary cog De’Vante Bausby and rookie UDFA running back Josh Adams, given one of this year’s largest guarantees among the undrafted contingent. Philadelphia also placed safety Chris Maragos on its Reserve/PUP list, shelving him for at least six weeks.
Here are the players the Eagles will not be including on their initial 2018 53-man roster:
Released:
- WR Kamar Aiken
- DE Steven Means

NFC Notes: Rams, Joyner, Eagles, Redskins, Dez Bryant
The deadline to reach deals with players who were franchised tagged was set by the league as July 16th. If a player and a team can’t agree on a deal by then, they aren’t allowed to agree to a longterm deal until after the 2018 season is over. One notable player who’s been tagged is Rams safety Lamarcus Joyner. Joyner remains unsigned, and there has been little progress on a deal according to recent reports. Fellow Rams defensive star Aaron Donald might be one reason why.
The Rams “would probably have a hard time giving big money to Joyner before finally extending the contract of” Donald, writes Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com. Given how much talk there has been about when Donald will get the contract extension he’s been wanting for over a year now, it might be bad optics for the team to extend Joyner first. Rams fans have been growing impatient with the front office over their inability to cut a deal with Donald. Donald held out all summer last year and ended up missing the first game of the season. If the Rams are reluctant to pay Joyner before Donald is locked up, it could mean Joyner heads into 2019 an unrestricted free agent.
Here’s more from around the NFC:
- Breaking down the Eagles’ secondary, Eliot Shorr-Parks of NJ.com sees a three way battle for the team’s final cornerback spot between De’Vante Bausby, D.J. Killings, and Chandon Sullivan. Shorr-Parks thinks Bausby is clearly in the lead and well on his way to a roster spot, whereas Killings and Sullivan will need to have “amazing” training camps and preseasons to make the 53-man roster.
- Dez Bryant will end up with the Redskins when he finally signs, predicts Jason Fitzgerald of Overthecap.com (Twitter link). Fitzgerald, a salary cap expert, thinks Bryant “won’t get much” in terms of compensation on whatever deal he signs.
- In case you missed it, another player who’s been franchised tagged and is looking for an extension, DeMarcus Lawrence, will meet with the Cowboys next week to talk about a deal.

Eagles Give Raise To D.J. Killings
The Eagles gave practice squad cornerback D.J. Killings a pay raise, according to ESPN.com’s Field Yates (on Twitter). He’ll now earn a weekly rate that is equivalent to the league minimum paycheck.
Bumping Killings up to a $27,353/week rate is probably an indication that another team tried to sign him away. It’s not a huge surprise given that he was one of the most talked about undrafted free agents in the 2017 class.
Killings bounced back from an injury-riddled 2015 season to start in all 13 games for UCF last season and had 42 tackles, three tackles for a loss, one sack, and 11 pass break-ups. After he ran a 4.48 40-yard-dash and posted a 37.5 inch vertical jump at his Pro Day, teams started showing real interest. Although he was passed on 250+ times in the draft, several teams tried to sign him in the spring.
Killings landed with the Patriots on a UDFA deal in May that gave him a higher-than-usual $20K guarantee. He did not make New England’s Week 1 roster, but the Eagles stashed him on the p-squad in October. It seems that Killings is a popular target yet again and the Eagles may have to elevate him to the main roster if they want to keep him for the full year.
The Eagles currently have five cornerbacks on the 53-man roster in Jalen Mills, Patrick Robinson, Rasul Douglas, Dexter McDougle, and Ronald Darby. Darby is dealing with an ankle injury, but it is believed that he will be able to return to action after Philly’s bye to face the Cowboys in Week 11.
