Jaguars Trim Roster To 53

The Jaguars were the latest team to announce their full slate of roster cuts, getting down to the required 53 players. Here are the moves:

Jaguars Sign DB Charlie Miller

The Jaguars added a familiar face to their team yesterday. The organization announced that they’ve signed defensive back Charlie Miller to their 90-man roster.

After being signed as an undrafted free agent, the six-foot-one, 190-pound Miller spent the majority of last season on Jacksonville’s practice squad. The team inked fifth-year cornerback Kenneth Acker and undrafted rookie cornerback Bryce Canady to contracts earlier this offseason, and they ended up waiving Miller soon after.

Now, the 24-year-old has another chance at making the Jaguars’ 53-man roster. He showed plenty of promise during his collegiate career, compiling 70 tackles and three interceptions in 24 games at Dartmouth College. He also earned a second-team All-Ivy League spot following his senior campaign.

Of course, similar to last year, Miller will be hard pressed to make the Jaguars’ opening day roster, although he could slide back into a practice squad role. With eight cornerbacks currently on the roster, Miller would probably having a better shot at making the team as a safety, especially after Don Carey landed on the injured reserve. Miller could end up competing with Ronnie Harrison, Cody Davis, and Jarrod Wilson for reps behind projected starters Tashaun Gipson and Barry Church.

Jaguars To Add CB Kenneth Acker

The Jaguars made a move to add some potential depth to their cornerback contingent on Saturday, agreeing to terms with Kenneth Acker, John Reid of the Florida Times-Union reports (on Twitter).

Jacksonville will also bring in cornerback Bryce Canady, per Reid. To make room on their 90-man roster, the Jags are releasing cornerback Dexter McDougle and waiving Charlie Miller.

A former 49ers and Chiefs cornerback, Acker previously signed with the Colts in April but was cut in May. He logged multiple visits as well, meeting with the Seahawks in the spring and, per ESPN.com’s Adam Caplan (on Twitter), the Raiders more recently. The Raiders viewed Acker as a possible safety but did not sign him.

A sixth-round 49ers pick in 2014, Acker spent time as a depth piece for the Chiefs the past two seasons. He started in two games with Kansas City, which acquired him via trade prior to the 2016 season. Acker’s most notable work came as a full-time starter for the 2015 49ers.

The Jags were McDougle’s fourth team. The former Jets third-round pick played sparingly for the Saints and Eagles last season. McDougle, who signed an extension with the Eagles prior to last season, latched on with the Jags via reserve/futures contract in January.

Jacksonville obviously has its starting spots locked down, with Jalen Ramsey and A.J. Bouye forming perhaps the league’s top corner tandem, but its depth is somewhat uncertain. Aaron Colvin‘s Texans defection led to a D.J. Hayden signing. Tyler Patmon and some lower-profile veterans comprise the rest of this corner corps. So, Acker has a reasonable chance of sticking around into the regular season.

Minor NFL Transactions: 7/17/17

Today’s minor moves:

  • The Falcons have placed offensive lineman Trevor Robinson on the reserve/retired list, according to Adam Caplan of ESPN.com (Twitter link). An undrafted free agent in 2012, Robinson has bounced around between the Bengals, Chargers, and Falcons during his NFL tenure. In 2015, he was a full-time starter with the Bolts, but could only land a reserve/futures deal this spring. Expected to compete for a reserve role with Atlanta, Robinson has instead decided to hang up his cleats.
  • The Jaguars have waived rookie defensive back Charlie Miller with an injury settlement, the club announced today. Miller went undrafted out of Dartmouth earlier this year. He can return to Jacksonville, but he’ll have to wait three weeks plus the length of the settlement.
