Odell Beckham Jr. To Play In Week 3
The Browns will be without Jarvis Landry for a bit, but their other well-paid wide receiver is set to make his 2021 debut. Kevin Stefanski said Friday that Odell Beckham Jr. is good to go for Week 3.
Beckham suffered a torn ACL October 25 of last year, and although the Browns moved forward and snapped their near-two-decade playoff drought without him, the team certainly could use him now. Landry is on IR, and no other Browns wideout has more than three catches this season.
It looked like OBJ would be ready for Week 1, after the team was “amazed” with the eighth-year receiver’s recovery ahead of training camp. But the Browns scratched him after warmups in Kansas City. They then ruled him out early for Week 2, leading to some additional concern. The 28-year-old target will step back into a key role Sunday against the Bears. Beckham did not miss any practice reps this week, per Stefanski.
Beckham played hurt in 2019 but managed to clear the 1,000-yard barrier. And he scored three touchdowns, including the game-winner, in a shootout against the Cowboys last season. But Beckham’s two Browns yards-per-game figures — 64.7 and 45.6, respectively — are by far the lowest of his career, however. The injury injected additional uncertainty regarding Beckham’s long-term future.
While it is no secret Beckham’s Browns tenure has underwhelmed, both from a health and fit standpoint, he will have a key opportunity to rebuild his stock beginning Sunday.
Jets LB B.J. Goodson To Retire
B.J. Goodson‘s Jets stay will end up being brief. The team announced Wednesday the veteran linebacker intends to retire. Goodson signed with the Jets last week.
The former Giants, Packers and Browns starter made his debut for the Jets in Week 2, seeing action on seven special teams plays in the team’s loss to the Patriots. But Goodson no longer intends to continue his sixth NFL season. The Jets placed the 28-year-old off-ball linebacker on their reserve/retired list.
A fourth-round pick out of Clemson in 2016, Goodson became a starter for the Giants in his second season. He made 20 starts with the team but was traded to the Packers before the 2019 season. Green Bay used Goodson as a first-stringer frequently during his lone season with the team, deploying him as a nine-game starter during a 13-3 campaign.
The Browns signed Goodson last year and plugged him into their starting lineup immediately. He made a career-high 91 tackles and intercepted two passes, helping Cleveland snap its lengthy playoff drought. Goodson did miss two games after contracting COVID-19 late last season, however. He returned to start in both Browns playoff games, making 16 tackles.
Pro Football Focus graded Goodson as an upper-echelon coverage linebacker in 2020, and the Jets signed him to a deal worth up to $2.1MM. Goodson made 251 tackles and intercepted four passes in his five-plus-year career.

Browns Place Jarvis Landry On IR
The Browns have placed wide receiver Jarvis Landry on the injured reserve list, per a club announcement. The good is that this should be a short-term IR stint as Landry recovers from his MCL sprain.
Landry went down with a knee injury during the Browns’ opening drive on Sunday and did not return. The Browns still went on to beat the Texans 31-21, but Landry’s injured knee will rule him out for the Bears this week. Per league rules, Landry must sit out for at least the next two games before retaking the field.
On the plus side, the Browns should have Odell Beckham Jr. back in action this week. Barring any additional setbacks, he’ll make his 2021 debut alongside Rashard Higgins and the rest of the Cleveland WR contingent.
Through two games (really, one game and change), Landry has six catches off of six targets for 80 yards. He also notched a rushing touchdown — the fourth rushing TD of his career — against the Chiefs in Week 1.
In a corresponding move, the Browns have promoted defensive end Ifeadi Odenigbo from the practice squad.
Browns Waive WR Davion Davis
The Browns are cutting Davion Davis (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport). The wide receiver was set to return from a two-game suspension this week, but he’ll hit the waiver wire instead.
The move is a bit surprising on multiple fronts. For starters, Davis led the team in receiving this preseason, showing some promise for the year ahead. Meanwhile, star receiver Jarvis Landry is week-to-week with a knee injury. Davis seemed to be a shoe-in for the 53-man roster, but the Browns have other plans.
Davis should draw interest from other clubs on the waiver wire, especially since he comes with a low-cost contract. Meanwhile, this could be a promising sign for Odell Beckham Jr. OBJ has yet to play this season, but the release of Davis might mean that he’s on the verge of making his 2021 debut.
Clubs will have 24 hours to claim Davis once he reaches the waiver wire. If he goes unclaimed, he’ll be a full-fledged free agent and able to sign with any team.
