Latest On Lions’ COVID-19 Situation

The Lions facility remains closed after learning of two positive tests for COVID-19. One player and one coach have been diagnosed with the coronavirus, and the number of close contacts on the coaching staff may leave the team in a difficult spot.

Interim head coach Darrell Bevell and nearly all of the defensive staff have been classified as close contacts. The Lions have a short week, too — they face the Buccaneers at 1pm ET on Saturday. We’ve seen players, executives, and coaches held out of team activities, but a scenario of near-zero coaches would be completely new territory for this NFL season.

Of course, the 5-9 Lions won’t be playing for much this week when they face Tampa Bay. After Saturday, they’ll close out the season against the Vikings. All that’s really left for Detroit is NFL Draft placement. If the season ended today, they’d own the No. 11 pick, behind the Cowboys, Chargers, and Giants.

Adrian Peterson Wants To Stay With Lions

Fond of indicating plans to play until or close to his age-40 season, Adrian Peterson would like to stay with his current team beyond 2020.

The future Hall of Fame running back said he wants to re-sign with the Lions, veteran NFL reporter Josina Anderson tweets. Peterson signed with the Lions shortly after Washington released him this summer, and the 35-year-old back has again proven productive without offseason acclimation.

Signed to a veteran-minimum deal, Peterson has made 10 starts for the Lions and gained 531 yards on the ground (3.7 per carry). He has added six touchdowns with Detroit, increasing his 14-year total to 123, and is barely 250 rushing yards shy of 15,000 for his career. Only Emmitt Smith, Walter Payton, Frank Gore and Barry Sanders reside in the 15,000-yard club. Peterson, whose 145 carries are tops among Lions this season, is barely 500 yards behind Sanders for fourth all time.

While Peterson has logged 3,181 carries (sixth all time), he has continued to produce as a late-career nomad. He rushed for 1,000 yards with Washington in 2018, despite signing there that August, and surpassed 1,000 scrimmage yards in each of his two Washington campaigns. With Detroit, he has shared the backfield with rookie D’Andre Swift. The Lions have Kerryon Johnson under contract through 2021 as well, though Peterson has seen far more work than the 2018 second-round pick.

The Lions are set to hire a new GM and new head coach soon, so it will be interesting to see if Peterson will receive another chance in Detroit.

Lions Fire ST Coordinator Brayden Coombs

The Lions have fired special teams coordinator Brayden Coombs, per a team announcement. Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com writes that special teams assistant Marquice Williams will take over the coordinator position for the final two games of the season.

Coombs, 34, began his coaching career as an intern with the Bengals in 2009. He served as Cincinnati’s assistant special teams coach from 2012-19, and his units were generally quite successful. The 2019 Bengals special teams unit was ranked first by Football Outsiders and fifth by Pro Football Focus, which prompted Detroit to hire Coombs as its ST coordinator back in January.

But a source told Rothstein that Coombs did not mesh with the culture that the organization is trying to create. In the Lions’ loss to the Titans yesterday, Coombs called for an unsuccessful fake punt without the knowledge of anyone else, including coaches and some players on the field. While Coombs’ abilities as a coordinator are clearly strong, the team apparently felt that his unilateral decision was emblematic of his overall approach. As Rothstein says, the team had been considering making a move for some time, and the fake punt was simply the last straw.

In related news, the Lions recently hired Chris Spielman to serve as a special assistant to chairman and president & CEO. Spielman, a franchise icon who played linebacker for the Lions from 1988-95, will be a key voice in the general manager and head coach hires that Detroit will soon be making, and he spoke at length about the vision that principal owner Sheila Ford Hamp has in terms of the club’s direction and culture.

As Justin Rogers of the Detroit News observes, Spielman — the brother of Vikings GM Rick Spielman — and team president Rod Wood used the word “culture” 22 times in 36 minutes at Spielman’s introductory press conference last week. Organizational sources tell Rogers that Coombs’ departure is a reflection of his “me-first” attitude that undermines that culture (Twitter links).

The Lions’ GM search is well underway, with the club having interviewed or planning to interview several internal options and a host of high-profile candidates like Louis RiddickThomas Dimitroff, and Scott Pioli. The team’s head coaching interviews will obviously start in earnest at season’s end, and 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh is rumored to be Detroit’s top choice.

Robert Saleh Atop Lions’ HC List?

The Lions have begun their GM search, interviewing Louis Riddick, Thomas Dimitroff, Scott Pioli and multiple internal candidates. One name has also surfaced in connection with the Detroit HC job.

49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh resides atop the Lions’ list of HC candidates, according to ProFootballNetwork.com’s Tony Pauline. They will likely have competition for the fourth-year 49ers defensive play-caller.

Saleh grew up in Michigan and went to college in the state, and these connections prompted dozens of Michigan lawmakers to pen a letter to Lions owner Sheila Ford Hamp urging her to hire the 49ers assistant to replace Patricia. The team appears to have already been monitoring Saleh, who emerged on the HC radar after the 2019 49ers’ rise to Super Bowl LIV.

While a healthier 49ers defense finished second in DVOA last season, Saleh has managed to keep this year’s injury-ravaged unit in the top five in total defense. The 49ers rank fifth in yards allowed going into their Week 15 game, despite missing Nick Bosa, Richard Sherman and several others for significant parts of the season.

Saleh, 41, has been connected to bringing 49ers VP of player personnel Adam Peters with him — should he land a coaching job in 2021. The Lions are open to using a 49ers-style setup where they hire the head coach before signing off on a GM as well, and Pauline adds the team is prepared to pair Saleh with a GM with whom he is comfortable.
