Minor NFL Transactions: 12/4/15
Here are Friday’s minor transactions from around the NFL, including practice squad moves:
- With Karlos Williams having been ruled out of this weekend’s game for the Bills, the team is elevating running back Mike Gillislee to the 53-man roster from their practice squad, tweets Mike Rodak of ESPN.com. Buffalo has yet to formally announce Gillislee’s promotion — a corresponding move will be required when it becomes official.
- The Ravens have re-added safety Nick Perry – not to be confused with the Packers linebacker – to their practice squad, per Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun (Twitter link). Offensive lineman Marcel Jones was cut from the 10-man unit to accommodate the move.

Earlier updates:
- The Saints tried out John Conner and Henry Hynoski, a league source tells Mike Florio of PFT. New Orleans already has a fullback on the roster in Austin Johnson, but he was a surprise scratch on Sunday and he may have fallen out of favor with coaches. Conner, nicknamed the Terminator, was a favorite of Rex Ryan while with the Jets. Conner followed Ryan to Buffalo in 2015, but he was let go before the start of the season. Hynoski, a four-year veteran, spent his full career with the Giants and appeared in every game last year.
- The Seahawks had ten players in for tryouts on Monday, including running back Isaiah Pead and defensive end Lawrence Okoye, a source tells Florio. Linebacker John Lotulelei, tackle Jesse Davis, guard Taylor Boggs, defensive end Keith Browner, guard Kadeem Edwards, defensive end Efe Obada, and defensive end DeAngelo Tyson were also showing their stuff for Seattle.
- The Jaguars brought in kickers Zach Hocker and Randy Bullock for a workout on Wednesday, but Josh Scobee was not among those in attendance, according to Michael DiRocco of ESPN.com (Twitter links).
- In addition to their previously reported look at Jeff Demps, the Jets tried out running back Akeem Hunt on Tuesday, a league source tells Florio. Wide receiver Larry Pinkard also got a look from Gang Green. Chris Ivory is dealing with tightness in his quad, so the Jets might opt to add a running back if he needs to sit out for a while.
- The Browns recently worked out cornerbacks Bill Bentley, Chase Casey, Al Louis-Jean, and Robert Steeples, Adam Caplan of ESPN.com tweets.
- The Cardinals worked out Emmanuel Acho, James Anderson and Ja’Gared Davis, Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle tweets.

Sunday NFL Transactions: NFC South
Listed below are the Sunday roster moves for the four NFC South teams. Following the 53-man roster cutdown deadline yesterday, many teams will make slight tweaks to their rosters, claiming players off waivers or signing guys who clear waivers. Those transactions for the Falcons, Panthers, Saints, and Buccaneers are noted below.
Additionally, as of 11:00am today, teams can begin constructing their 10-man practice squads. For the 2014 and 2015 seasons, changes were made to practice squad rules that allow teams to carry eight players instead of 10, and the eligibility requirements for those extra two spots were also loosened. You can check out our glossary entry on practice squads to brush up on those changes, as well as all the other guidelines that govern the 10-man units, whose players practice with the team but aren’t eligible to suit up on Sundays.

Dolphins Pare Roster Down To 53
The Dolphins removed 20 players from their roster in order to reach the mandated 53-man limit, with the most notable of the team’s releases coming at kicker.
Caleb Sturgis will not begin a third season as the Dolphins’ kicker, as Andrew Franks won competition for the spot, according to the team’s website.
In going with rookie undrafted free agent Franks over Sturgis, a third-year veteran, it marks the first time in eight years Miami will deploy two new specialists. Rookie Matt Darr supplanted eight-year punter Brandon Fields, a 2013 Pro Bowler, earlier this week.
Sturgis missed eight kicks in each of his two campaigns.
Miami’s additional cuts are as follows:
- Damarr Aultman, WR
- McLeod Bethel-Thompson, QB
- Sam Brenner, C
- Deandre Coleman, DT
- James Davidson, LB
- Emmanuel Dieke, DE
- Mike Gillislee, RB
- Cobi Hamilton, WR
- Donald Hawkins, T
- Mike Hull, LB
- Anthony Johnson, DT
- Christion Jones, WR (Waived/injured)
- Don Jones, S
- Mike Liedtke, G/T
- Jeff Luc, LB

Dolphins Cut Brady Quinn, Seven Others
3:30pm: The Dolphins have formally announced their other nine roster moves (Twitter link). The following players have been removed from the active roster:
Waived:
- Brett Brackett, TE
- Steven Clarke, CB
- Rakim Cox, DE
- Cory Grissom, DT
- Tyler Larsen, C
- Ryan Spadola, WR
Placed on injured reserve:
- A.J. Francis, DT
- Mike Gillislee, RB
- Arthur Lynch, TE
3:11pm: The Dolphins must officially remove 11 players from their active roster today, and while the team has yet to announce those moves, a pair of cuts have been reported so far. Veteran quarterback Brady Quinn passed along word of his own release, tweeting that his time with the team was “short-lived,” but that he “enjoyed every second.” Besides Quinn, wide receiver Armon Binns will also be one of Miami’s roster casualties, tweets Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.
Quinn, who spent time in 2013 with the Seahawks, Jets and Rams, didn’t see any action during the regular season, and didn’t join a new team this year until about two weeks ago, when he signed with Miami. Viewed as a stopgap signing for a team in need of healthy camp arms, Quinn was never a threat to unseat backup signal-caller Matt Moore, let alone starter Ryan Tannehill. Perhaps now if the team has injuries problems in the regular season though, Quinn will get a look.
As for Binns, his best NFL season came in 2012, when he caught 24 total balls during his time with the Bengals and Dolphins. After missing the 2013 campaign, he didn’t appear to be in Miami’s plans for 2014.
AFC East Notes: Bridgewater, Decker, Patriots
As Louisville quarterback Terry Bridgewater continue’s to see his stock fall, teams in the mid-to-late first round have to be seriously considering the possibility of him being on the board when they draft. Once thought to be the potential top pick, GangGreenNation.com asks if the Jets should consider taking Bridgewater should he be on the board when they come up to the podium.
While the Jets have Geno Smith and Michael Vick in the fold, Bridgewater could represent the long-term solution at quarterback that some fans and pundits hope Smith can still become. It also increases the trade value of the pick should the Jets decide to move down in the draft, as teams moving up to take a quarterback are often willing to overpay in a trade.
Here are some other notes from the AFC East:
- GangGreenNation.com also notes the despite the Jets’ improvement the quarterback situation should experience, that adding Eric Decker would not adequately fix the depth chart at receiver. They note that while Decker is an upgrade, he is not the elite type receiver that would be able to change the offense. Also, the belief that Stephen hill will be the second receiver would give pause, as he has not proven himself as a viable option in his first two seasons.
- In a series of tweets, Albert Breer of the NFL Network discusses the Patriots’ offseason. He notes that the team has made a focused effort to be good in 2014, although the team says they are all in for the Super Bowl every year. Breer notes that Nate Solder and Devin McCourty are the top priorities going forward, and that interior line play and backup tight end will be priorities in the draft.
- The Dolphins are set at running back after signing Knowshon Moreno, and they will not pursue free agent Chris Johnson, writes James Walker of ESPN.com. However, the team has a backlog at the position, and while Lamar Miller is safe, Daniel Thomas and Mike Gillislee will fight for a roster spot.
