Latest On Dan Snyder, NFL Owners
Earlier this week, it was reported that a number of NFL owners were considering action against Dan Snyder which could rise to the level of an attempt to remove him from the Commanders. Given the remarks made by certain others, however, that may not be the case.

As detailed by Mark Maske of the Washington Post, support seems to favor a suspension. He writes that “no meaningful steps have been taken toward making a push to remove Snyder from ownership of his franchise” – a rather stark rebuttal to the notion that the numerous controversies the 57-year-old has been involved in could threaten his position.
The latest of those controversies (allegations of financial impropriety, which was labelled by one owner as potentially being “the nail in the coffin”) will have a significant impact on owners’ decisions. The investigation into the matter is ongoing, the result of which will likely be the next major turning point in this situation. As Maske writes, multiple owners would support “significant disciplinary action” being taken against Snyder should the allegations be proven true.
“We’d have to know a lot more than we do now” one owner said, via Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer. While that still leaves the door open to action like a vote on removal being possible at some point, Maske reports that multiple owners have not been approached regarding their position should any such vote take place.
“There’s certainly concern”, said one owner. “There’s anger. But there’s quite a difference between wishing he was gone and taking steps to force him out.” Breer adds that the precedent Snyder’s removal would set is a key point, and that the “bar will be set very high” for as many as the requisite 24 owners being prepared to go ahead with that action.
For the time being, little is expected to take place regarding this situation. Depending on the outcome of the investigation, though, this could remain a key storyline.

Latest On Commanders Owner Dan Snyder
Dan Snyder has been involved in another controversy surrounding the Commanders this offseason, and it could affect his future in the NFL. As detailed by Jarrett Bell of USA Today, a number of other owners are considering “drastic options” in advance of this week’s league meetings.
The latest source of angst in Washington is centered around the ongoing FTC investigation into financial wrongdoing, much of which is alleged to have taken place between the years 2010 and 2015. The team has publicly rebuked the allegations, calling them “baseless”, “false and reckless” and based on “pure speculation”.
While the investigation has yet to be completed, its very existence has left Snyder “very much on the minds of some fellow NFL owners who would go as far as trying to force [him] from their ranks”, Bell notes. As one such owner anonymously said, “there’s growing frustration about the Washington situation and not over one issue, but over how much smoke there is”, adding “I think everybody’s getting tired of it”.
Last offseason, it was announced that Snyder would not be suspended as a result of the investigation into the team’s workplace culture. Instead, his wife assumed the day-to-day duties of running the franchise, which was fined $10MM. Even before this latest investigation, Bell reports, there was an “anti-Snyder sentiment” which was “significant”.
As a result, another owner remarked that the allegations of Washington using two sets of books for the purpose of hiding league revenue, if proven to be true, would be “the nail in the coffin”. Furthermore, yet another said that “we are counting votes” – a statement which signals an intent, if sufficient support exists, to compel Snyder to sell the team.
As Bell notes, however, it is “unclear” at this point how many owners would be prepared to go that far. A three-fourths majority (that is, 24 other owners) would be required to remove the 57-year-old, who will not be in attendance at this week’s meetings.

Commanders Preparing Extension For Terry McLaurin?
With one major domino having already fallen this offseason with respect to extension-eligible receivers, another could be soon to follow. The Commanders have positioned themselves in a way that makes a second contract for Terry McLaurin a distinct possibility.

As detailed by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Washington “spent mildly in free agency” this spring. Part of the reason for doing so, he continues, is the fact that the team “has budgeted for” a long-term deal with McLaurin. The 26-year-old has one season remaining on his rookie contract with a cap hit of just over $3MM.
As Fowler notes, however, that figure will spike considerably if/when the sides reach an agreement on a new deal. The former third rounder’s production has placed him amongst the top young players at the position; in three seasons, he has missed only two contests while averaging 74 receptions and 1,030 yards per campaign. Those numbers, considering the team’s quarterback situation throughout that span, make him a logical extension candidate.
The WR market has seen a dramatic upward trend this offseason, though. With the cost of top young wideouts increasing, McLaurin was named, along with fellow 2019 draftees Deebo Samuel and A.J. Brown, as players choosing not to attend their respective teams’ offseason programs. While the latter has since been signed to a four-year, $100MM extension, doing so required the Titans trading him to the Eagles.
Extending McLaurin was listed after the season as a top priority by head coach Ron Rivera, but Fowler writes that the new going rate for top wideouts “looms large” in this situation. While the team could afford a slight uptick in his cap hit via a new deal, they still rank towards the bottom of the league in terms of overall financial flexibility. Nevertheless, they see McLaurin as “a true cornerstone piece”, meaning that a lucrative second contract being signed in the near future would come as little surprise.

Commanders To Sign Rookie WR Jahan Dotson
Another Day 1 wideout from last month’s draft is set to officially join the league. The Commanders are signing Jahan Dotson to his rookie deal (Twitter link via Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post). 
As the No. 16 pick, Dotson’s contract will be worth just over $15MM. The Penn State product had a four-year college career, which included significant production in his final two seasons. After playing behind fellow speedster KJ Hamler, he took on a larger workload in 2020. That year, he posted 884 yards and eight touchdowns despite the campaign being limited to just eight games.
With increased expectations as the Nittany Lions’ top pass-catcher, Dotson took another step forward in terms of production. He ranked third in the Big Ten in both receptions (91) and yards (1,182) and scored 13 total touchdowns. He also contributed on special teams as a punt returner. That ranked him near the top of this year’s class at the position, with many pegging him as a first round-caliber prospect.
Expected by many to be eyeing a wideout with the No. 11 pick, the Commanders traded down from that spot. They swapped with New Orleans, who gave up No. 16 to take Chris Olave. Situated at the end of a run on receivers as a result of the move, the Commanders had fewer options to choose from, but were still able to boost their passing game. Dotson will join the likes of Terry McLaurin, Curtis Samuel and Dyami Brown in their WR room, as they look to take a step forward on offense with Carson Wentz.

Commanders, Chargers Put In Claims For G Wes Martin
Guard Wes Martin, who was waived by the Giants last week, generated a fair amount of interest on the waiver wire. The Jaguars have top waiver priority due to their league-worst 3-14 record in 2021, so they were awarded the Indiana product when they put in a claim, but as ESPN’s Field Yates tweets, the Commanders and Chargers put in claims as well.
Had Washington’s claim been successful, it would have represented a reunion for player and team. The Commanders made Martin a fourth-round pick in 2019, and he started 10 games for the club over the 2019-20 seasons. He did not survive the 53-man cut in advance of the 2021 campaign, though he signed with Washington’s p-squad after clearing waivers. He was poached by the Giants in late September and ultimately appeared in seven games (one start) for Big Blue.
With the Commanders, Martin would have served as useful guard depth behind presumptive starters Andrew Norwell and Trai Turner, both of whom were signed this offseason. The Chargers likewise appear to be on the lookout for interior OL reinforcements behind Matt Feiler and first-round rookie Zion Johnson.
In Jacksonville, Martin is obviously not going to unseat the newly-acquired Brandon Scherff at right guard, though he could theoretically push 2020 fourth-rounder Ben Bartch for the starting LG gig. Bartch started 11 games for the Jags in 2021 and played well at times, though his 62.1 overall grade from Pro Football Focus is underwhelming.
