Detroit Lions News & Rumors

Injury Updates: Brees, Ryan, Apple, Slay, Johnson

The latest injury updates from around the league:

  • Drew Brees has missed five games now, and it looks like the Saints quarterback is nearing a return. Brees said he will return to practice this week and that he hopes to play in Week 8 against the Cardinals, according to Mike Triplett of ESPN.com (Twitter link). That being said Brees told Triplett he’s still taking a “we’ll see” approach, so it’s far from guaranteed he suits up against Arizona. Still, he’s clearly going to be back soon. Teddy Bridgewater has gone 5-0 in his absence, so Brees’ thumb injury might end up turning out to be a blessing in disguise if it leaves him more fresh down the stretch. New Orleans picked up a big win on the road against Chicago Sunday, and their defense is playing lights out.
  • Speaking of NFC South quarterbacks, Matt Ryan left the Falcons’ loss to the Rams early with an ankle injury. Ryan was in a lot of pain and in a boot after the game, but a source said “the team does not believe the injury is serious,” per Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Atlanta’s season is circling the drain as they sit at 1-6 and Dan Quinn could be fired any week, so it’s quite possible they’re cautious with Ryan. It wouldn’t be a surprise at all if Matt Schaub is under center next week against Seattle.
  • Cornerback Eli Apple left the Saints’ win over the Bears with a non-contact knee injury, which understandably sparked a lot of concern. The “initial belief” is that Apple hyperextended his knee, according to Nick Underhill of The Athletic (Twitter link). It’s unclear how serious the injury is and he could certainly still miss some time, but fortunately it doesn’t sound like an ACL tear. Apple has started every game for New Orleans this season, and is a key part of their defense. This one will be important to monitor.
  • Star cornerback Darius Slay and running back Kerryon Johnson both left and were ruled out of the Lions’ loss to the Vikings. There hasn’t been much of an update on either, but Slay’s was a hamstring and Johnson’s was a knee. Slay missed one game with a hamstring injury earlier this year, so it sounds like he aggravated that. Johnson missed six games with a knee injury last season, so this is obviously troubling. We’ll keep you posted as soon as we hear more.

NFL Practice Squad Updates: 10/19/19

A couple of practice squad moves to report as we await kickoffs tomorrow:

Cincinnati Bengals

Detroit Lions

A couple of somewhat notable running backs latched back on today in Perine and Perkins. They’d been waived by the Bengals and Lions respectively in the past couple of days. Perkins was a fifth-round pick of the Giants back in 2016, while Perine was taken in the fourth-round by the Redskins in 2017. Both players received plenty of buzz in their rookie years, but fizzled out quickly. Perkins went to UCLA, while Perine is an Oklahoma product.

Lions Work Out RB Jeremy Hill

The Lions made a backfield swap this week, adding Tra Carson and jettisoning Paul Perkins. They may not be done looking at options.

Jeremy Hill worked out for the Lions, according to ESPN.com’s Field Yates (on Twitter). This is Hill’s first known workout since a torn ACL ended his 2018 after one game. The former Bengals back categorized himself as close to returning as of July, and he’s now ready to audition for teams.

The former second-round pick latched on with the Patriots on a one-year deal in 2018. But the knee injury scuttled his chances of contributing to last season’s Super Bowl champions.

Hill has struggled with multiple injuries over the past two seasons. Set to 27 this weekend, Hill does have three seasons in which he cleared 790 rushing yards. They came from 2014-16, with 2014 being the only time he surpassed 4.0 yards per carry.

Kerryon Johnson, Ty Johnson, J.D. McKissic and Carson reside on the Lions’ roster. It’s possible the Lions opted for a Carson waiver claim over Hill, but other teams may soon inquire about the five-year veteran.

Running back Jeremy Cox also showed his stuff for Detroit on Friday, as Howard Balzer tweets.

Lions Claim RB Tra Carson

The Lions are making a change to their running back depth chart. Detroit has claimed Tra Carson off waivers from the division-rival Packers while waiving Paul Perkins, the club announced today.

Carson, a former undrafted free agent, has been in the NFL since 2016, but he’s mostly bounced between active and practice squads with the Bengals and Packers. His most significant game action actually came in Week 5 of this year, when he handled six carries for 14 yards and posted four receptions against the Cowboys.

Turning 27 years old next week, Carson has some ties to the Detroit staff, as Lions running back coach Kyle Caskey previously tutored Carson in Cincinnati. Carson will slide into a Lions depth chart that includes starter Kerryon Johnson as well as backups Ty Johnson and J.D. McKissic.

Perkins, 24, was selected by the Giants in the fifth round of the 2016 draft and put up 456 yards during his rookie campaign, but hasn’t done much since. He spent the 2018 campaign on injured reserve before being claimed by the Lions last month.

Lions Notes: Guards, Daniels

  • The Lions have been doing something pretty unusual with their offensive line this year. Instead of sticking with their five-man unit at all times for chemistry purposes, Detroit has been rotating three guards in all of their games. Graham Glasgow has been starting at right guard, Joe Dahl has been starting at left guard, and Kenny Wiggins has been mixing in for series’ here and there at both positions. The system was the idea of offensive line coach Jeff Davidson, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. “There came a time, obviously in that first week (of the season that) I’m sitting here trying to agonize over who’s winning the starting job and all that stuff there,” Davidson said. “To me, it was clear who owned the starting jobs, but I also believed that Kenny Wiggins earned the right to be on the field and it’s just a way to be able to get that done also.” As Birkett points out both Glasgow and Dahl have received strong marks from Pro Football Focus, but the team doesn’t plan on changing things anytime soon. The Lions have gotten off to a better start than just about anybody expected, so it’s understandable why.
  • Speaking of Monday Night Football injuries, Lions defensive tackle Mike Daniels will have to wait a bit longer for his revenge. The longtime Packer was released in July and signed with Detroit shortly after, but he’s going to miss his second straight game with a foot injury. Daniels signed a one-year, $9.1MM deal with the Lions just two days after getting cut.
