Packers Place Mike Daniels On IR

One of the Packers’ best players won’t have a chance to help the team make a last-ditch playoff charge in the coming weeks. Green Bay placed defensive end Mike Daniels on IR.

Wide receiver Trevor Davis will also be moved to the Packers’ IR list. Green Bay will promote fullback Dan Vitale from its practice squad and activate wide receiver Jake Kumerow from IR.

Afflicted with a foot injury, Daniels carried a questionable designation into Sunday’s game against the Cardinals. The standout defensive lineman has been a key component of the past several Green Bay defenses, serving as a full-time player for the past five years. He’s played in 10 Packers games this season.

Green Bay extended Daniels via four-year, $41MM contract during the 2015 season. One year (at a $10.9MM cap number) remains on Daniels’ deal. He made the Pro Bowl last season and has 29 career sacks.

Kumerow returned to Packers practice last week. The Division III product has not played in an NFL game yet, despite being a fourth-year pro. Initially a Bengals UDFA, Kumerow may soon be in line to make his regular-season debut. He’ll replace Davis in the Packers’ receivers room. Davis is the third Packer wideout to land on IR this year, following Kumerow and Geronimo Allison. Kumerow’s activation ensures Allison won’t return in 2018.

Packers’ Jake Kumerow Returns To Practice

Unlike last season, when the Packers waited until mid-December to make their second IR-return move, they are finished making such decisions before Thanksgiving.

UDFA wide receiver Jake Kumerow will represent Green Bay’s second recall. The team also brought wideout Trevor Davis off IR earlier this month. Kumerow, whom the Packers placed on IR just after finalizing their 53-man roster in September, will have 21 days to be activated.

While Kumerow hasn’t caught an NFL pass yet, despite being a fourth-year UDFA, this designation is notable because the Packers cannot bring anyone else off IR this season. The team waited until Week 15 last year to bring back Aaron Rodgers. That said, the Packers don’t have another obvious IR-return candidate. Muhammad Wilkerson, Davon House, Jake Ryan and Geronimo Allison are out for the year.

The Packers have six wide receivers on their active roster. With Davis, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, J’Mon Moore and Equanimeous St. Brown being recent draft picks, it will be interesting to see which one — if any — is bumped for a UDFA out of Division III Wisconsin-Whitewater. Kumerow, 26, caught on with the Packers via reserve/futures deal in January.

Packers Sign LB Korey Toomer

It didn’t take long for Korey Toomer to find a new job, as the veteran linebacker is signing with the Packers according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network (Twitter link).

Toomer signed a one-year deal with the 49ers back in April, but was released Saturday as part of final cuts. Toomer has earned journeyman status over the past couple years, spending time with the Seahawks, Cowboys, Rams, Raiders, Chargers, and 49ers across his relatively short career.

Toomer, a Super Bowl XLVIII champion with the Seahawks, was drafted by Seattle in the fifth round back in 2012. Toomer will provide depth and experience to a Packers linebacking corp that’s been plagued by injuries this offseason. Starter Jake Ryan was lost for the season with a torn ACL, and projected starter Oren Burks will miss at least a couple weeks with a shoulder injury.

Toomer played mostly on special teams earlier in his career, but began to make a big impact on defense with the Chargers. He started eight games each of the past two seasons, and was serviceable. For his career, the former Idaho Vandal has 130 tackles, two sacks, and five passes defended.

In a corresponding roster move, the team placed wide receiver Jake Kumerow on injured reserve.

Minor NFL Transactions: 9/22/17

Today’s minor moves:

  • The Patriots are promoting defensive end Geneo Grissom to the active roster, according to Mike Reiss of ESPN.com (on Twitter). The Pats have been paying Grisson handsomely by taxi squad standards – $36,716 per week – and they think rather highly of the former third-round pick. Given the way the Pats’ pass rush was depleted over the offseason, they could use his production. The 25-year-old has appeared in 26 games for the Patriots over the last two years but has yet to really make a mark.
  • The Browns have promoted practice squad wide receiver Jordan Leslie in advance of Sunday’s game (Twitter link via Ian Rapoport of NFL.com). Given Corey Coleman’s injury, Leslie should be in for some playing time. To make room, Cleveland waived wide receiver Reggie Davis.
  • The Bengals have waived wide receiver Jake Kumerow from injured reserve.
