Panthers Could Lose Ken Dorsey
- If Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur lands a head coaching gig in the coming weeks, he’s expected to bring Panthers quarterbacks coach Ken Dorsey along with him, tweets Alex Marvez of the Sporting News. Dorsey, 36, has spent his entire post-playing career in Carolina, first as a pro scout and now as QBs coach. He interviewed for the Bills’ offensive coordinator position in 2017, but Buffalo ultimately hired Rick Dennison.
2018 Offensive/Defensive Coordinator Tracker
While at least six NFL teams are making head coaching changes this offseason, the number of clubs replacing offensive and/or defensive coordinators figures to be much higher than that. In addition to all those teams hiring new head coaches, who may want to bring in their own assistants, several clubs also figure to make changes on one side of the ball or the other after getting disappointing results in 2017. Latest On Steve Wilks
Add the Cardinals to the list of teams looking to get a crack at Panthers DC Steve Wilks, who is arguably this offseason’s hottest head coaching candidate. Per Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, Wilks — who is coaching Carolina’s defense in its playoff tilt against the Saints this afternoon — will spend the coming week trying to fit in interviews with Arizona, the Giants, the Lions, and the Colts (Twitter link).
The Cardinals have already interviewed a few candidates for their head coaching gig, including their own DC, James Bettcher, and Patriots’ DC Matt Patricia. But they plan to at least sit down with Wilks to see what the hype is all about.
As Rapoport notes in a brief segment with colleague Mike Garafolo (video link), all four of the above-referenced teams are waiting to hire a new head coach until they have had the chance to meet with Wilks (which is interesting, because we heard just yesterday that the Lions are expected to hire Patricia). Rapoport adds that, despite the fact that the Panthers have fielded an impressive defensive unit this season, it is Wilks’ leadership ability, even more so than his prowess as a defensive coordinator, that has him in such high demand.
Garafalo notes that new Giants GM Dave Gettleman is anxious to get Wilks in front of team ownership, and ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweets that Wilks will interview with Big Blue on Monday. How many interviews he takes beyond that will depend on the outcome of today’s playoff matchup.
The Bears also requested to interview Wilks, but as of yet, there has been no word as to whether Wilks will meet with Chicago.
Panthers, HC Ron Rivera Agree To Extension
The Panthers have been looking for some stability in their organization, and it sounds like they’ve found that with Ron Rivera. The Panthers announced that they’ve signed their head coach to an extension. NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport was the first to report (via Twitter) that the organization was closing in on a two-year extension with their head coach. The new contract would keep Rivera with the team through the 2020 season. Jourdan Rodrigue of the Charlotte Observer reports that the deal is worth $15.5MM.
“I’m very excited about it because I really like where we are as a football team,” Rivera said. “We’ve done some really good things and we have an opportunity to do more. Things are in place and we can continue this success. We’ve had consistency of winning and we’ve gone to the playoffs four out of five years.
“This is a tremendous place with tremendous support from ownership and the people that work in the organization. And I really appreciate the support we’ve gotten from our fans in the Carolinas. That’s a big reason why I want to continue my association with this organization.”
We heard last month that the Panthers were prioritizing signing Rivera to an extension. The 55-year-old joined the organization back in 2011, leading his team to only 13 wins during his first two seasons at the helm. However, since then, the Panthers have gone 51-28, and they made a Super Bowl appearance along the way. If Rivera hadn’t been signed to an extension, Rapoport notes that he would have been one of the most popular names for the various head coaching vacancies, including the Bears. Rivera was Chicago’s defensive coordinator from 2004 through 2006.
Of course, while the Panthers may appreciate the stability on their coaching staff, the front office and ownership are a different story. This extension would be the first major move for COO Tina Becker, who replaced owner Jerry Richardson. The owner is now planning on selling the team amid allegations of workplace misconduct. The team is also rolling with an interim general manager in Marty Hurney, whose contract runs through June. As ProFootballTalk.com tweets, new ownership could realistically clear house, meaning Rivera’s extension doesn’t necessarily mean he’s safe.
Panthers Want Julius Peppers Back
The Panthers would like to have 37-year-old Julius Peppers back in the fold next year, as David Newton of ESPN.com writes.
Peppers is playing out a one-year deal with a base value of $3.5MM that could reach up to $4.25MM with bonuses. Of course, his focus is currently on helping the Panthers advance in the playoffs.

Bears Request To Interview Panthers DC Steve Wilks
The Bears have requested permission to interview Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks for their head coaching vacancy, reports Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune (Twitter link).
Wilks, 48, has quickly emerged as one of the top head coaching candidates around the league despite offering just one year of coordinating experience. In his first season as Sean McDermott‘s replacement in Carolina, Wilks lead the Panthers to a No. 7 rating in defensive DVOA, while his unit also finished seventh in yards and 11th in scoring. That performance has to led to several other interview requests, as the Colts, Giants, and Lions have all sought to meet with Wilks.
The Bears have cast a wide net after firing head coach John Fox earlier this week, as Wilks will join Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo, Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, and Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur as candidates for the Chicago job. Whomever lands the Bears head coaching gig will presumably ink a four-year contract in order to line up with general manager Ryan Pace, who was recently extended through the 2021 campaign.
