Jaguars To Acquire OL Cole Van Lanen From Packers, Waive G Wes Martin
8:10pm: The Packers acquired a 2023 seventh-round pick, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter (on Twitter).
11:46am: A year into his career, Cole Van Lanen is being traded. The Packers are sending the 2021 sixth-round pick to the Jaguars, Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com tweets.
Jacksonville will create a roster spot by cutting guard Wes Martin, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com notes (on Twitter). Not yet a vested vet, Martin generated waiver interest earlier this year and will head back to the wire.
The Packers will receive an undisclosed draft pick for Van Lanen, a Green Bay native. A Wisconsin alum, Van Lanen played in one game with the Packers, despite a flood of injuries along their offensive line in 2021. The Jaguars will take a flier here.
Wisconsin’s primary left tackle from 2019-20, Van Lanen earned second-team All-Big Ten acclaim in ’19 and first-team honors in the truncated 2020 season. The Packers had been using Van Lanen at tackle and guard during his short stay with his hometown team, Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel tweets. The Packers drafted offensive linemen in the third, fourth and seventh rounds this year (Sean Rhyan, Zach Tom, Rasheed Walker).
Both the Chargers and Commanders put in claims for Martin in May, when the Giants cut him. Washington originally drafted Martin in the 2019 fourth round and used him as a starter at points during his first two seasons. Martin, 26, started 10 games for Washington from 2019-20 and played in seven Giants games last season.
Jaguars To Waive K Ryan Santoso, Claim K James McCourt
10:11am: The Jags will use the waiver wire to make their latest kicker transaction. Doug Pederson said Tuesday the team submitted a claim for kicker James McCourt, whom the Chargers waived Monday. Although claims are not official until this afternoon, the Jaguars hold the No. 1 waiver priority due to their 2021 record.
A rookie UDFA, McCourt worked as the University of Illinois’ kicker for the past three seasons. He made 18 of 23 field goal tries in 2021 — a career-best mark — but could not beat out Chargers incumbent Dustin Hopkins.
9:12am: The Jaguars are waiving Ryan Santoso, Michael DiRocco of ESPN.com tweets. As a result, the team does not have a kicker on its roster. The team also waived quarterback Jake Luton.
While Jacksonville will obviously not go long without a kicker — the team plans to replace Santoso later Tuesday, per DiRocco — this is a somewhat strange development. The Jags had already waived Matthew Wright, their primary 2021 kicker, earlier this offseason.
The team waived rookie UDFA Andrew Mevis late last month, after an eventfully bad training camp workout, and released his replacement (Elliott Fry) from IR via injury settlement soon after. Santoso had caught on with the Jaguars in March, and the team cut Wright a few weeks later.
Santoso, 27 later this week, kicked for the Lions and Panthers last season and made a Titans cameo in 2019 — his first NFL action. The University of Minnesota alum has only kicked in seven career games. He began the 2021 season shortly after being traded from the Giants to the Panthers and bounced on and off the Rams’ practice squad during the team’s leadup to Super Bowl LVI.

Compared to earlier this week, Friday has been a quiet day on the transaction front, but a number of teams have still made moves. Here’s the full rundown:
Arizona Cardinals
- Re-Signed: OL Greg Long
- Released: TE Deon Yelder
Cincinnati Bengals
- Signed: OL Nathan Gilliam
- Waived: LB Carson Wells
Jacksonville Jaguars
- Released from IR via injury settlement: K Elliott Fry
New Orleans Saints
- Re-Signed: K John Parker Romo

New York Giants
- Signed: OL Chris Owens and Josh Rivas
- Waived: DT Christopher Hinton
- Placed on IR: WR Robert Foster
Pittsburgh Steelers
- Released from IR via injury settlement: LB Ulysees Gilbert
Lamp, a second-round pick of the Chargers in 2017, played sparingly in his first two years but was a full-time starter in 2020. With the team making upgrades up front, though, he found himself playing in New Orleans this past season. After suiting up for over 1,100 snaps the year prior, Lamp saw action on just five special teams plays with the Saints, meaning that his roster spot wasn’t assured anyway.
Jags Eyeing Week 1 James Robinson Return
The Jaguars did not place James Robinson on their active/PUP list to start training camp, but coming off a late-December Achilles tear, the third-year running back’s early-season availability has been in question. Doug Pederson is envisioning Robinson being ready to go from the outset.
Robinson made his 2022 debut in team drills this week, per Michael DiRocco of ESPN.com. The UDFA success story will not play in Jacksonville’s second preseason game, but, in classifying Robinson as “almost there,” Pederson is anticipating a Week 1 re-emergence.
“It’s the expectation; it’s kind of the hope that he can be there at that point,” Pederson said of Robinson’s potential Week 1 availability, via Pro Football Talk’s Myles Simmons. “And, listen, if not, it’s OK. We’re comfortable with the guys behind him and we’ll go with what we have.”
Jacksonville having Robinson in uniform in Week 1 would position the team to, at long last, trot out both its top backs in a game. The team played 2021 without first-round pick Travis Etienne. After the Clemson product missed his rookie year, he has not experienced any setbacks in a return from a Lisfranc injury. The Jags also chose Snoop Conner in the fifth round this year.
Cam Akers‘ late-season return last year showed how quickly running backs can surmount Achilles tears, though the Rams back was not exactly himself during his late-season cameo. It has been nearly eight months since Robinson went down. It will be interesting to see Robinson’s 2022 form and how Pederson uses he and Etienne. The former has been the Jaguars’ leading rusher in each of his two years, following up a UDFA rookie-record 1,414 scrimmage yards with a better YPC average (4.7) last season.
Because of his UDFA status, Robinson is already extension-eligible. But the Jaguars are on their third head coach of the Illinois State alum’s career. It would make sense for the team to determine how Robinson fits in Pederson’s offense and see how he looks post-Achilles before proceeding down that road. Robinson, 24, can be kept via ERFA and RFA tenders through 2023.

Perry’s interesting post-draft NFL journey continues. Initially slated to join the Eagles as a UDFA, he ended up signing with the Jaguars days later. Then, in July, he was waived (with an injury designation) to make room for Sloter’s addition. Perry has obviously recovered, as the two have now swapped placed once more.
Fenton was one of four Chiefs placed on the PUP list at the start of training camp. That came as little surprise at the time, but his return to practice will be a welcomed sight in Kansas City’s secondary. NFL Network’s James Palmer tweets that Fenton’s preseason availability remains a question mark, but that he is still expected to be fully recovered in time for the regular season.
Jackson was a fifth-round pick in this year’s draft at a position which has been in flux throughout the offseason in New Orleans. The 24-year-old had a highly productive final season in particular at Appalachian State, posting 119 tackles, 20 TFLs and six sacks. He will now have to wait until 2023 to carve out a depth role in the middle of the Saints’ defense.
