Latest On Saints’ QB Situation
The Saints had recently entertained the notion of making a quarterback change for the second time this season, but that move will be delayed for at least one more week. Head coach Dennis Allen confirmed on Wednesday that Andy Dalton will remain the team’s starter in Week 11.
The veteran has been in place as New Orleans’ No. 1 since Week 4, when he stepped in for an injured Jameis Winston. The latter entered the season fully recovered from his 2021 ACL tear and with a two-year deal in hand to continue where he left off last season. Back and ankle injuries have limited his availability during this campaign, however, and he struggled during his three starts.
Dalton remained atop the depth chart even after Winston was healthy enough to dress, given the team’s relative offensive success. Last month, Allen indicated that Dalton could take on the starter’s role on a full-time basis depending on his performance and Winston’s availability to recover. The 35-year-old’s first five starts saw the Saints put up no fewer than 24 points in each contest, quelling any potential controversy at the position.
In the two games which have followed, New Orleans has scored 23 total points in losses to the Ravens and Steelers. Allen endorsed Dalton in the former case, stating that he gave no consideration to a midgame QB change against Baltimore. Days ago, though, the door seemed to open to a Winston return as the Saints remain in search of a catalyst for their banged-up offense.
“[W]e haven’t been doing as well the last couple weeks,” Allen said earlier this week, via ESPN’s Katherine Terrell, on the subject of a potential quarterback swap. “So, I think we’ve gotta evaluate that. I think that’s something that we need to look at.”
Allen said today (via Terrell, on Twitter) that Winston is still not 100% healthy. More worryingly, he added that it remains unclear if the former No. 1 pick will reach full health any time soon. For at least one more game, then, it will be Dalton under center as New Orleans hosts the Rams on Sunday as a pair of struggling teams aim for their fourth win of the season.

Saints Place C Erik McCoy On IR
After leaving Monday night’s loss to the Ravens with a calf injury, Saints starting center Erik McCoy was placed on injured reserve yesterday. Since they were able to make the move prior to today’s game against Pittsburgh, this gives McCoy five weeks for a potential return from IR after the Saints late Week 14 bye week. If they waited until after today’s game, the 25-year-old wouldn’t be eligible to return until Week 16.
McCoy is currently in his fourth year out of Texas A&M, serving as the team’s starting center since being drafted in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft. This is McCoy’s second encounter with a calf injury after missing five games last year due to calf issues. Before that, McCoy played every game possible in his first two years.
When McCoy left last week’s game, the Saints moved right guard Cesar Ruiz, who had plenty of experience at center from his time in Ann Arbor, to cover for McCoy and brought in Calvin Throckmorton to fill in for Ruiz. Today, though, the Saints started Josh Andrews, whom they had just signed to the active roster from the practice squad yesterday, at center, allowing Ruiz to return to right guard. Throckmorton and undrafted rookie Lewis Kidd split time filling in for an injured Andrus Peat at left guard and, after starting left tackle James Hurst, already filling in for first-round rookie Trevor Penning, left the game with an injury, Landon Young was called into action. The offensive line is currently in tatters with three starters out by the end of today’s game.
If Hurst or Peat are forced to miss any more time, expect more practice squad call ups in the coming weeks. The Saints currently roster Drew Desjarlais, Yasir Durant, and Derrick Kelly on the practice squad and may have to call on one or all of them to cover their battered offensive line in case of any further injuries.

Saints Designate OL Trevor Penning For Return
Trevor Penning is getting closer to his NFL debut. The Saints rookie offensive lineman has been designated to return from injured reserve, according to Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football (on Twitter).
The Northern Iowa product was one of the best offensive lineman prospects in the 2022 NFL Draft, and he ended up going 19th overall to the Saints. The rookie made immediate headlines during training camp when he got into fights with teammates on three consecutive days.
Then, during New Orleans’ preseason finale, Penning suffered what was thought to be a “bad case of turf toe.” However, the injury was later revealed to be a ligament tear in his injured foot. Considering the timing and severity of the injury, there was some initial fear that Penning may have to miss his entire rookie campaign. However, we heard last month that the organization was eyeing a November return. Penning appears to still be on that return timeline, and at the very latest, he’ll be back on the field by early December.
“I’m definitely counting the days,” Penning said today of his impending NFL debut (h/t to Terrin Waack of NOLA.com). “It’s been hard. Today was my first day watching walk-through in person, so that was kind of hard to see. I’m like shoot, I really want to get back out there.”
Penning was expected to replace the departed Terron Armstead in the starting lineup. James Hurst has since run away with the starting left tackle gig, and with Ryan Ramczyk entrenched at right tackle, Penning may be eyeing a backup role when he’s ready to hit the field. Ramczyk is currently nursing an injury (along with Erik McCoy and Andrus Peat), so a role could also open up sooner than later.

Adams, Dulin, Ellefson, Galeai, Washington and Willis each have until Nov. 30 to be activated from IR. Should they not be activated, they would revert to season-ending IR. The Colts and Vikings are in solid shape regarding activations, having only used one apiece. The Bears, Cardinals, 49ers and Packers have used three such moves apiece. Teams are allotted eight injury activations this season.
The Cowboys dangled Basham in trades before last week’s deadline, but no takers emerged. While the team cut the other D-lineman they were hoping to deal — Trysten Hill, who has since been claimed by the Cardinals — they ended up using one of their injury activations on Basham. A former Colts third-round pick, Basham notched 3.5 sacks during his first Cowboys season last year. He played in one game this season (Week 1) before going down with a quadriceps injury. The Cowboys, who have Tyron Smith and James Washington on their IR-return radar, have used two injury activations this season.
Saints Sign RB Derrick Gore
The Saints have added a running back to their active roster. The Saints are signing Derrick Gore, according to Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com (on Twitter). Gore was among a group of RBs (including Antonio Williams and JaQuan Hardy) who worked out for the organization.
Gore was a 2019 undrafted free agent, but it took him until 2021 to finally get a shot in the NFL. After catching on with the Chiefs via a reserve/futures contract and later a practice squad gig, Gore earned a promotion to the active roster. He ended up seeing time in 11 games for Kansas City, finishing with 59 touches for 361 yards and two touchdowns. He also garnered another three touches in two playoff contests.
The 27-year-old landed on injured reserve in late August with a thumb injury, meaning he’d be restricted from playing a game with Kansas City in 2022. He ended up getting released a few days later, allowing him to sign with another squad.
This move probably doesn’t have a whole lot to do with the status of Alvin Kamara. TMZ recently released a new video of Kamara’s alleged attack on another man during Pro Bowl weekend in Las Vegas, but Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com writes that the video won’t alter the player’s status moving forward. Kamara is facing felony battery charges, and the NFL continues to monitor the situation. Per Florio, Kamara has a hearing set for tomorrow.
Mark Ingram is currently dealing with a knee injury that forced him to miss Monday night’s game. Jordan Howard was called up from the practice squad yesterday to join Kamara and Dwayne Washington on the RB depth chart. Washington wasn’t able to capitalize on increased snaps over the past two weeks, and there’s probably little chance Gore ends up getting a whole lot of run. However, considering the team’s recent release of Jake Funk from the practice squad, Gore could find himself sticking around the organization for a bit.
