Rams’ Gerald Everett Drawing Trade Interest
Ahead of Gerald Everett‘s contract year, the Rams opted to extend Tyler Higbee. This leaves Everett as a player who could be bound for free agency in 2021.
Certain other teams appear to view the situation this way, with Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic noting the Rams have received calls on Everett’s availability (Twitter link). However, the Rams are not currently planning to move the former second-round pick, Rodrigue adds.
While Everett has not quite lived up to his Round 2 billing, he has worked in Sean McVay‘s system for three seasons and has served as an auxiliary contributor. Last season, he was enjoying a potential breakout year. But an injury halted his progress. Everett finished last season with 37 catches for 408 yards. The Rams used a fourth-round pick on Brycen Hopkins this year, but the pandemic taking away rookies’ onsite offseason work stands to limit their development.
The Rams appeared closer to trading Higbee in 2018, having exchanged offers with the Vikings on the 2016 draft pick. But after Higbee’s strong stretch to close last season, the Rams extended him instead. It would seem Everett will make a final audition reel for free agency this season.

Rams Cut Kickers Austin MacGinnis, Lirim Hajrullahu
In a move that may or may not make the final episode of the latest Hard Knocks season, the Rams have decided on a kicker.
The team made the decision Friday to waive kickers Austin MacGinnis and Lirim Hajrullahu. This will leave Sam Sloman, a seventh-round pick out of Miami (Ohio) as Greg Zuerlein‘s successor.
Sloman separated from the other two competitors over the past week, per The Athletic’s Jourdan Rodrigue (on Twitter). Sloman made 87% of his field goals as a senior for the Redhawks last season.
The Rams signed MacGinnis and Hajrullahua as UDFAs this year. This will mark the first time since 2011 the Rams will head into a season without Zuerlein as their kicker. They opted to let the Pro Bowl specialist walk in free agency, when he signed with the Cowboys.
Rams’ Travin Howard Done For Year
Travin Howard will miss the 2020 season with a torn meniscus, as Jordan Rodrigue of The Athletic tweets. The Rams will make it official this week by placing the linebacker on injured reserve.
[RELATED: Rams, Ramsey Not Close On Extension]
Howard, a 2018 seventh-round pick, spent the early part of his career as a practice squad and special teams player. In 2019, he made the most of his opportunity and closed strong with 13 tackles and three pass breakups over the final five weeks of the season. This summer, he was in the midst of an impressive camp and potentially in the conversation to start. Now, he’ll have to wait until 2021 to potentially take his next big leap forward.
Even before the injury, the Rams were concerned about their lack of depth at inside linebacker. Troy Reeder – who is hardly a household name – leads the team’s ILBs in career starts with eight. Former Raven Kenny Young stands as the only other ILB on the roster with starting experience.
Rams, Jalen Ramsey Not Close On Extension
The Rams and cornerback Jalen Ramsey are not close to an agreement on a contract extension, per veteran NFL reporter Josina Anderson (via Twitter). However, Anderson’s source notes that it’s still early in the process, thereby implying that there is no real tension between player and team at this time.
Of course, given that Los Angeles ponied up two first-round picks and a fourth-rounder to obtain the outspoken star last October, the club will do everything in its power to keep him around on a long-term basis. Ramsey, the No. 5 overall pick of the 2016 draft, did not maintain the same high level of play during after his trade to the Rams that he displayed during his 3+ years with the Jaguars, but there is no reason to believe that he cannot return to form and serve as one of the game’s top corners for years to come.
Indeed, Rams head coach Sean McVay recently indicated that he views Ramsey as a player who can reset the CB market, which certainly won’t hurt Ramsey’s leverage. Currently, Darius Slay is the leader in the cornerback clubhouse with an average annual value of $16.7MM, so Ramsey is likely shooting for at least a $17MM AAV. And given that he won’t turn 26 until October, he is likely eyeing the ~$57MM in guarantees that Byron Jones took home from the Dolphins this offseason.
The Rams’ cap space could be a complicating factor in negotiations. According to OverTheCap.com, LA has roughly $4MM of room right now. Ramsey is presently slated to take home a $13.7MM salary this season with a corresponding cap charge, and while an extension could theoretically bring that number down a bit, the team also has future salary cap concerns, exacerbated by the fact that the 2021 cap could decrease by as much as $23MM.
So talks could extend into the season, but look for the two sides to come to an agreement at some point before the end of the 2020 campaign.
No Fans At Rams Games 'Until Further Notice'
- SoFi Stadium will debut next month, but fans will not be permitted to watch those games. The Chargers and Rams will not have fans at home games “until further notice,” the teams announced. The 49ers will take a similar route. No fans will attend their Week 1 game against the Cardinals. With California being one of the most cautious states during the pandemic, this is certainly not unexpected.

Robert Woods Could Seek New Deal?
- Robert Woods has become of the NFL’s most consistent wideouts since joining the Rams in 2017, and with two years remaining on his current contract, it’s possible he could be looking for a new deal. The 28-year-old had “talks early on” this year and is now looking to “get paid,” as Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times writes. Woods, who has topped 85 receptions and 1,110 yards in each of the past two seasons, is only earning $6.8MM annually. He’s due to count for $8.175MM on the Rams’ 2020 cap.
