Vikings Taking Quarterback Situation "One Week At A Time"

  • Vikings coach Mike Zimmer acknowledged that quarterback Shaun Hill did well during Sunday’s win over the Titans, but he added (via Vikings.com) that the team is taking the quarterback situation “one week at a time.” It’s uncertain if the coaching staff is leaning towards Hill or Sam Bradford for this weekend’s game against the Packers.

Vikings, Joe Berger Agree To Extension

SATURDAY, 9:15am: Berger received a $915K roster bonus with the one-year extension, tweets Tom Pelissero of USA Today. The lineman is now due around $2MM in 2016 and $1MM in 2017 (not including incentives).

FRIDAY, 1:48pm: The Vikings announced that they have reached agreement on a one-year extension with center Joe Berger. Berger’s new contract is technically a two-year deal, according to Ben Goessling of ESPN.com (on Twitter) which means it could include a slight bump for 2016. Berger, entering his 12th NFL season, was rated by Pro Football Focus as one of the league’s top centers in 2015. This offseason, Berger won the starting job at center and made long-time starter John Sullivan expendable, leading to his release.

A sixth-round pick in the 2005 draft, Berger had two stints with the Dolphins and spent time with the Cowboys before joining the Vikings in 2011. Since then, Berger has appeared in 77 games and made 34 starts for Minnesota.

Vikings To Start Shaun Hill On Sunday

The Vikings will start quarterback Shaun Hill, not new acquisition Sam Bradford, in their Week 1 showdown with the Titans on Sunday, reports Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (Twitter link). The team hasn’t made a formal announcement yet, but Vikings players were informed of the decision, per Rapoport.

In a stunning move, Minnesota paid a lofty price – a first-round pick in 2017 and a fourth-rounder in 2018 – to acquire Bradford from Philadelphia last weekend. However, the 28-year-old simply hasn’t had enough time to get up to speed in a new offense yet. That temporarily opens the door for Hill, who’s in his second year with the Vikings. The 36-year-old journeyman’s most extensive recent action came in 2014, when he started in eight of nine appearances with the Rams and completed 63.3 percent of attempts for 1,657 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Of course, the Vikings are only in their current position because of the devastating knee injury starter Teddy Bridgewater suffered at the conclusion of August. Bridgewater has since undergone season-ending surgery on multiple torn ligaments, though he should be back in 2017. Without Bridgewater, who helped lead the Vikings to an NFC North title last season, the club will try to return to the playoffs with a combined effort from Hill and Bradford.

Vikings Reach Injury Settlement With Michael Griffin

WEDNESDAY, 5:37pm: Griffin and the Vikings reached an injury settlement, sending the veteran safety into free agency, Ben Goessling of ESPN.com tweets. Griffin injured his back in late August.

SATURDAY, 5:07pm: The Vikings announced that they’ve actually placed Griffin on IR, but could presumably release him with a settlement.

SATURDAY, 1:00pm: The Vikings quest to get down to 53 will include the release of a veteran safety. Michael Griffin, who just joined the Vikings this offseason, has been cut. Griffin wrote the following on Instagram (sic):Michael Griffin

“Just want to thank the @vikings organization for the opportunity and want to wish them the best the Season. Thanks for memories and friendships that will never be broken.”

At the age of 31, Griffin is not the player he once was. He still managed to start 14 games for Tennessee last season, accruing 65 tackles, one interception, and one sack. He was not expected to be a focal point of Minnesota’s secondary, but he apparently didn’t do enough to make the team this summer.

Vikings GM On Bradford Trade

The Vikings paid a big price to land Bradford, but they didn’t part with anyone currently on their roster. While some observers have said that the Vikings gave up too much to get the former No. 1 overall pick, it sounds like the Vikes would have had to give up as much or more for any other established QB.

Peter King of The MMQB spoke with Vikings GM Rick Spielman about the Sam Bradford trade and how it unfolded. As Spielman explained, teams all around the league were asking for a fortune to part with their veteran quarterbacks.

“I made a bunch of calls. I am not gonna mention teams. But there was blood in the water and teams knew it. The price was too high,” the Vikings GM said. “I didn’t want to mortgage our future. Some teams asked for a first-round pick and a core young player. I can understand the pick. But we worked too hard over the past three years to put all that time and energy into drafting and developing a solid core of this team. I was taken aback who they were asking for. Players who’d been in the Pro Bowl. I mean, in the off-season you’ve got time. There’s not blood in the water in the off-season. But now there was.”

Sunday NFL Transactions: NFC North

Listed below are the Sunday roster moves for the four NFC North teams. Following the 53-man roster cutdown deadline yesterday, many teams will make slight tweaks to their rosters, claiming players off waivers or signing guys who clear waivers. Those transactions for the Bears, Lions, Packers, and Vikings are noted below.

Additionally, as of 12:00pm CT today, teams can begin constructing their 10-man practice squads. You can check out our glossary entry on practice squads to brush up on those changes, as well as all the other guidelines that govern the 10-man units, whose players practice with the team but aren’t eligible to suit up on Sundays.

Waiver Wire Priority For All 32 NFL Teams

Yesterday was the 53-man roster deadline, but the madness will continue today as teams pick through the waiver pile for talented discards. Priority is dictated by the reverse standings with tiebreakers where necessary, which is to say that it will be the same as the 2016 draft order before all the trades. Unlike your fantasy league’s waiver wire, a team does not go to the back of the list upon making a successful claim. That means that the league’s worst teams from 2015 have a significant advantage today as they make late roster additions.
