Cowboys Expected To Add To K Competition
The Cowboys currently have just one kicker on their roster, but that could change in the near future. According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, Dallas will, “in all likelihood,” add to the position before training camp next month.
The Cowboys signed Jonathan Garibay as an undrafted free agent this offseason, making him the starter by default at this point. He will have the opportunity to replace Greg Zuerlein, whom the team released in March. The veteran ultimately signed with the Jets, further limiting the experienced options available to Dallas as they look for competition. Archer notes that the USFL could provide an answer, along with, of course, kickers let go by their current teams.
Garibay enjoyed a productive final college season at Texas Tech. He made 15 of 16 field goals, including a 62-yarder, the longest made kick in the FBS in 2021. He earned First-Team All-Big 12 honors as a result. The former Red Raider has drawn praise from head coach Mike McCarthy in the early stages of his NFL career. “You can definitely get a feel for his ability,” McCarthy said, adding that Garibay is “off to a good start.”
Archer names Chris Naggar as a candidate to be brought in for training camp. The 21-year-old was signed by Dallas to a futures contract in February, but released last month. His lone NFL game came last year with the Browns, so he would essentially be on level terms with Garibay in terms of experience. Nevertheless, it would come as little surprise if the Cowboys were to add one or more other kickers by July as they look for more consistency at the position heading into another season filled with high expectations.

Latest On Jets’ Kicking Situation
The Jets recently signed kicker Chris Naggar as part of a 12-man UDFA class, and head coach Robert Saleh said Naggar has a real chance to win the team’s kicking competition (Twitter link via Connor Hughes of The Athletic). Special teams coordinator Brant Boyer is said to be particularly excited about Naggar’s potential.
New York used three kickers last season: Sam Ficken, Sergio Castillo, and Chase McLaughlin. Ficken opened the 2020 season with the kicking job, but he missed six games due to injury. Castillo, Ficken’s first replacement, ended up converting just eight of 13 FG attempts, and the Jets turned to McLaughlin for the final game of the year. But, as a result of the Naggar addition, the club recently waived McLaughlin.
Ficken was retained for the 2021 campaign via a reserve/futures contract, but it sounds like he will need to beat out a rookie to keep his job. The Penn State product was not very good for Gang Green in 2019, connecting on 70.4% of his FG tries, but he was much better in his nine contests last year. He sank 13 of 15 tries (86.4%), though he did miss three PATs in 15 attempts.
Naggar, who started his collegiate career at Texas before transferring to SMU, hit 17 of 21 field goal attempts (81%) and 43 of 46 PATs (93.5%) in 2020.
Jets Cut WR Josh Doctson
The Jets are doing some spring cleaning. On Friday, the Jets released six players from their offseason roster, including wide receiver Josh Doctson. Meanwhile, they also welcomed 12 new undrafted free agents. Here’s the full rundown:
Released:
- WR Josh Doctson
- K Chase McLaughlin
- CB Kyron Brown
- TE Connor Davis
- OL Leo Koloamatangi
- WR Jaleel Scott
Signed:
- Isaiah Dunn, DB, Oregon State
- Michael Dwumfour, DL, Rutgers
- Milo Eifler, LB, Illinois
- Parker Ferguson, OL, Air Force
- Grant Hermanns, OL, Purdue
- Tristen Hoge, OL, BYU
- Kenny Yeboah, TE, Mississippi
- Chris Naggar, K, SMU
- Jordyn Peters, S, Auburn
- Hamilcar Rashed Jr., DE, Oregon State
- Teton Saltes, OL, New Mexico
- Brendon White, LB, Rutgers
Doctson, a former first-round pick of the WFT, joined the Jets in February as a street free agent. In August, he exercised his right to opt out, tolling his one-year pact to 2021. While Doctson did not deliver on Washington’s investment, he did post multiple 500-plus-yard seasons from 2017-18 and profiled as a somewhat interesting candidate to factor into the Jets’ wideout mix last season. Now, he’ll seek employment elsewhere.
