Saints Place Taysom Hill, Trevor Siemian On Reserve/COVID-19 List
The Saints are the latest team with a virus issue. It may well lead the playoff-contending squad starting a rookie at quarterback Monday night.
New Orleans placed Trevor Siemian on the reserve/COVID-19 list earlier Thursday morning, Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com notes, and Ian Rapoport of NFL.com adds that Taysom Hill will also be moved to the virus list (Twitter link). Rookie Ian Book is the next man up. The Notre Dame product is likely to get the call Monday night.
Book would be New Orleans’ fourth QB starter this season, following Jameis Winston, Siemian and Hill. The Saints selected the ex-Fighting Irish standout in the fourth round. This certainly could stall the Saints’ recent momentum. After nearly falling out of the playoff race during a stretch without Alvin Kamara, the Saints have won two straight — including a 9-0 win in Tampa that doubled as Tom Brady‘s first shutout loss in 15 years.
Sean Payton has not been at the facility this week; the 16th-year head coach remains away from the team after testing positive for COVID last week. The Saints chose Book 133rd overall. He started three seasons at Notre Dame, topping out with a 34-touchdown pass season as a junior in 2019.
Book is also the winningest starting QB in Notre Dame history. He stands to be tasked with helping the Saints stay on the No. 7 seed line in the NFC playoff race. The Saints’ win over the Buccaneers moved them to 7-7; FiveThirtyEight.com gives the team a 44% chance to make the playoffs. New Orleans being forced to give the keys to a Day 3 rookie with zero regular-season snaps will impact those odds.
The Saints also added seven more players to their reserve/COVID-19 list. Malcolm Jenkins is among them. Joining the veteran safety are safety Jeff Heath, guard James Carpenter, offensive lineman Jordan Mills, defensive end Jalyn Holmes, D-tackle Christian Ringo and linebacker Kaden Elliss.

Saints Move Chauncey Gardner-Johnson To IR, Activate Ken Crawley
The Saints will be without one of their secondary starters for a stretch. They placed Chauncey Gardner-Johnson on IR. The young defensive back is down with a foot injury.
Although Gardner-Johnson may be known more for inducing punches from wide receivers at this point in his career, the third-year defender has been a key presence in New Orleans’ veteran-laden secondary. The former fourth-round pick has started seven games for the Saints this season, working in multiple capacities — including the slot position.
Gardner-Johnson has made 26 tackles, one sack and an interception this season. The Saints have fellow corner/safety hybrid P.J. Williams capable of manning the slot as well, and the team activated veteran Ken Crawley off injured reserve Saturday.
Crawley has been with the Saints for most of his career, beginning with the team in 2016, but has played just one game this season. In addition to his IR stay, Crawley spent two weeks on the Saints’ reserve/COVID-19 list.
New Orleans also promoted wide receiver Kevin White from its practice squad and waived defensive lineman Christian Ringo. The team also promoted offensive lineman Will Clapp ahead of its Week 10 matchup with Tennessee. The Saints are set to be without left tackle Terron Armstead against the Titans.

Bengals Waive 11 Players
The Bengals have taken a considerable step towards reaching the 53-man max on Saturday by waiving the following eleven players:
- LB Curtis Akins
- C Kirk Barron
- S Demetrious Cox
- LS Dan Godsil
- CB Tony Lippett
- DT Dare Odeyingbo
- DT Christian Ringo (injury settlement)
- LB Sterling Sheffield
- DE Immanuel Turner
- K Tristan Vizcaino
- G Christian Westerman
Lippett, one of the more recognizable names on the list, hooked on with the Bengals exactly 30 days ago. The former second-round pick offered familiarity with defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, but it wasn’t enough to keep him in the fold.
Bengals Place Adolphus Washington On IR
Another day, another Bengals player sidelined. This time, it’s defensive lineman Adolphus Washington being shut down for the year due to a knee injury. To take his place on the roster, the Bengals signed defensive tackle Christian Ringo off of the Cowboys practice squad.
Washington was a third-round pick of the Bills in 2016, but didn’t do much during his time in Buffalo. Washington appeared in 15 games (11 starts) as a rookie, compiling 21 tackles and 2.5 sacks. However, the defensive tackle was arrested prior to his sophomore campaign, and the Bills subsequently shopped him for a fifth-round pick. In September, they released him, and he hooked on with the Cowboys practice squad. Soon after, the Bengals inked him to a main roster deal. His Bengals run ends with six tackles and one sack.
With Washington out, the Bengals went back to the Cowboys’ taxi squad once again. Ringo has suited up for 15 games in three NFL seasons and may get a chance to add to his resume in the final games of the 2018 season.
