Chiefs To Start Juan Thornhill Over Daniel Sorensen
The Chiefs are making a change at the safety position. As Ian Rapoport of NFL.com writes, Kansas City is relegating Daniel Sorensen, who has started every game since Week 6 of last year (save for a meaningless Week 17 contest) to a reserve role.
Juan Thornhill will get the start alongside strong safety Tyrann Mathieu in Sorensen’s stead. Thornhill, a 2019 second-rounder, started every game of his rookie campaign, intercepting three passes and generally playing like a high-level defender. However, he suffered a torn ACL in the last game of the 2019 season, and though he played in all 16 contests last year (eight starts), he still struggled with his knee pain and could not replicate his earlier level of performance.
Sorensen, re-signed to a one-year, $2.4MM contract this offseason, has struggled mightily in 2021. He has been repeatedly beaten in coverage, is yielding a 153.8 passer rating when targeted by opposing QBs, and has also missed nine tackles. Pro Football Focus’ advanced metrics, which weren’t particularly high on him in 2020 either, view him as the third-worst safety in the league among players with over 100 snaps.
The Chiefs have gotten off to a 2-3 start, and their porous defense has been the primary reason for that. KC currently ranks as the second-worst defense in terms of yards allowed, and while the Sorensen-Thornhill swap won’t be a cure-all, it is certainly a logical move to make.
Thornhill has played in just 142 snaps this year (compared to Sorensen’s 325), but he has been decidedly more effective in his limited action. Per PFF, the Virginia product ranks as a top-30 safety, which includes an above-average coverage mark. A return to his 2019 form could position him well for a possible extension in 2022.

RB Marlon Mack On Chiefs’ Radar
Clyde Edwards-Helaire will miss multiple games for the second straight season, leaving the Chiefs thin in the backfield. While Darrel Williams is in line to fill in while Edwards-Helaire recovers from his latest injury, the two-time reigning AFC champions have been looking into a higher-profile fill-in.
The Chiefs have discussed Marlon Mack as a trade option, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com notes. The Colts are aiming to accommodate Mack with a trade, and Edwards-Helaire is set to miss at least three games with the MCL sprain he sustained Sunday night.
[RELATED: Mack Discusses Potential Trade]
Kansas City represents the first team connected to Mack, a former 1,000-yard rusher who re-signed with Indianapolis after suffering an Achilles tear in Week 1 of last season. But Mack’s market is cold, per Fowler. A late-round pick would seemingly get a deal done.
A fourth-year UDFA, Williams has served as CEH’s direct backup this season. Free agent pickup Jerick McKinnon has handled just four touches in five games. The Chiefs opted to bring in a well-known weapon last year to back up Edwards-Helaire, signing Le’Veon Bell midseason. That deal did not end up moving the needle much.
Mack, 25, amassed 1,091 rushing yards and eight touchdowns for the Colts two seasons ago, doing so in 14 games. In 12 games in 2018, Mack helped the Colts go from 1-5 to the playoffs by totaling 908 rushing yards and nine TDs in just 12 games. While the former fourth-round pick has not been used much as an aerial weapon, he showed consistent rushing ability — behind one of the NFL’s best offensive lines — before his injury. Mack also delivered a bit of a breakthrough effort Monday, rushing for 47 yards on five carries. For the season, Mack has just 85 yards on 20 totes.
The Colts have Jonathan Taylor signed through 2022 and recently gave passing-down back Nyheim Hines an extension. This profiles as Indianapolis’ long-term backfield pairing, with Mack now merely representing short-term depth behind Taylor. Mack’s one-year deal includes less than $800K in remaining base salary.

Chiefs Place Clyde Edwards-Helaire On IR
TUESDAY: The Chiefs placed their starting running back on IR. Edwards-Helaire will miss at least the next three games. Kansas City promoted running back Derrick Gore from its practice squad. Gore joins Darrel Williams and Jerick McKinnon as the Chiefs’ active-roster running backs. As of this afternoon, the Chiefs are not expecting Edwards-Helaire to miss more than the required three games, USA Today’s Josina Anderson tweets.
MONDAY: Chiefs running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire will miss time after suffering an MCL sprain on Sunday (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport). That’ll cost him a few weeks of action, but that’s relatively good news considering how the injury looked last night.
The Chiefs may look to place Edwards-Helaire on injured reserve if he’s looking at three weeks or more of recovery. If he has a chance of returning sooner, however, they could leave him on the 53-man roster to keep a Week 8 return on the table.
Edwards-Helaire, the No. 32 overall pick of the 2020 draft, enjoyed a strong rookie showing up until his late season ankle and hip injuries. In 13 games, the LSU product tallied 803 rushing yards and four touchdowns off of 181 totes. He also added 36 catches for 297 yards and one score, showcasing his potential as a dual-threat back. So far this year, he’s got 304 yards off of 65 totes, good for a 4.7 ypc.
Meanwhile, the Chiefs are also awaiting word on injuries to wide receiver Tyreek Hill (knee) and Joe Thuney (hand fracture).

Chiefs Promote Josh Gordon
The Chiefs have promoted Josh Gordon to the 53-man roster, per a club announcement. With that, the wide receiver could debut as soon as this Sunday night against the Bills.
“I‘m just gonna play it by ear and see how he feels,” head coach Andy Reid said earlier this week (via Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star). “Really, it’s more of a comfort thing with the offense. I don’t want to put him in a bad situation out there.”
The early word has been promising. Despite his well-documented troubles and past difficulties with grasping the playbook, Gordon has been clicking with his new club on the practice field.
The Chiefs, as always, have been scoring with ease this year, but Gordon will give opposing defenses another headache to contend with. Even though he’s years removed from his best work, Gordon is one of the most naturally talented receivers of his generation. To this day, his 14-game 2013 campaign sits sixth on the NFL’s receiving yards-per-game list (117.6).
If Gordon plays in Week 5, it’ll mark his first live NFL action since December of 2019.
