Colts Place G Quenton Nelson On IR
The hits keep coming for the Colts. The team placed All-Pro offensive guard Quenton Nelson on injured reserve today (per the team’s Twitter). Nelson recently suffered a high-ankle sprain, an injury that will keep him sidelined for at least the next three games.
The sixth-overall pick in the 2018 draft quickly established himself as one of the top offensive guards in the NFL. The lineman has earned a Pro Bowl nod and first-team All-Pro recognition in each of his three professional seasons.
Nelson hadn’t missed a game through his first three year in the NFL. He underwent surgery in early August to repair a bone issue in his foot, and his recovery timeline put him at risk of missing the season opener. The 25-year-old managed to battle back and appear in 100 percent of his team’s offensive snaps in Week 1 (and subsequently Week 2). Nelson was limited to only 13 snaps last weekend before suffering his injury.
The Colts made two additional moves today in anticipation of tomorrow’s matchup against the Dolphins. The team promoted both safety Ibraheim Campbell and quarterback Brett Hundley from the practice squad.

Hundley’s release signals that the Colts aren’t all that concernedabout Carson Wentz‘s foot, or his vaccination status. The move comes even after sixth-round rookie Sam Ehlinger suffered a knee injury that will sideline him for a good chunk of time. The real takeaway is that they’re comfortable with 2020 fourth-round pick Jacob Eason, — he’s now the only other healthy quarterback behind Wentz on the initial roster.
Colts To Cut Brett Hundley
The Colts clearly aren’t too concerned about Carson Wentz‘s foot, or his vaccination status. Indianapolis is waiving fellow quarterback Brett Hundley, a source told Jim Ayello of the Indianapolis Star (Twitter link).
The move comes even after sixth-round rookie Sam Ehlinger suffered a knee injury that will sideline him for at least the early part of the season, so they must really not be concerned. It also suggests the team is pretty comfortable with 2020 fourth-round pick Jacob Eason, since he’ll be the only other healthy quarterback behind Wentz on the initial 53-man roster.
This suggests that Wentz’s foot will be all healed up and ready to go by Week 1. After Wentz’s injury originally had a harsher prognosis, the team signed Hundley just to give them some semblance of a veteran presence. A fifth-round pick of the Packers out of UCLA back in 2015, Hundley had some serious buzz around him for a while after some strong preseason performances.
But when he was forced to start nine games in 2017 in place of an injured Aaron Rodgers, he fell flat on his face, ruining his stock. He spent the past few seasons as a backup with the Seahawks and Cardinals. Considering he was unsigned until the last day of July, his phone won’t be ringing off the hook now that he’s a free agent again.
Minor NFL Transactions: 7/31/21
We’ve got a bunch of minor moves to report from what turned out to be a pretty busy Saturday in the NFL:
Atlanta Falcons
- Signed: LB Tuzar Skipper
Cleveland Browns
- Placed on reserve/retired list: WR Derrick Willies
Houston Texans
- Signed: OL Danny Isidora
Indianapolis Colts
- Signed: QB Brett Hundley, DT Joey Ivie
Jacksonville Jaguars
- Signed: WR Tevin Jones
- Cut: LB Leon Jacobs, K Aldrick Rosas
New England Patriots
- Signed: OL Jerald Hawkins
New York Giants
- Signed: WR Damion Willis
New York Jets
- Signed: K Matt Ammendola
- Cut: K Sam Ficken
Seattle Seahawks
- Signed: QB Sean Mannion
Washington Football Team
- Claimed off waivers from Dolphins: OL Ross Reynolds
Hundley is the biggest signing on this list. The Colts adding him is a pretty good sign they expect Carson Wentz to miss some significant time. Assuming Wentz misses games, Hundley will battle it out with second-year pro Jacob Eason.
A couple of kickers who have started a bunch of games both found themselves sent packing in Ficken and Rosas. Mannion latched on with the Seahawks. He’s familiar with new Seattle OC Shane Waldron from their time together with the Rams, explaining why the Seahawks added him as an option behind Russell Wilson.
QB Brett Hundley To Visit Cowboys
The Cowboys are expecting Dak Prescott to be on the field for individual work when they begin Phase 3 of their offseason program next week, but the team does not boast considerable experience behind its starter. Mike McCarthy is looking to change that.
One of McCarthy’s former pupils will visit the Cowboys this week. Ex-Packers and Cardinals backup Brett Hundley will make a trip to Dallas this week to meet about the backup job, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com tweets.
Dallas wants to add a quarterback, Fowler adds, and Jeff Driskel made a visit recently. The team did not sign the nomadic reserve, however. Hundley has a wealth of experience in McCarthy’s offense. A 2015 fifth-round Green Bay pick, Hundley spent four seasons with the Packers. An Aaron Rodgers shoulder injury brought Hundley into the lineup in 2017, and while the UCLA product did not fare especially well in a lost Packers season, he played for McCarthy for most of his Green Bay run.
Hundley, 27, spent the past two seasons with the Cardinals. He worked as Kyler Murray‘s backup for much of that stay, but the Cards used Chris Streveler over its more experienced backup after Murray went down in a pivotal Week 17 game last season. Hundley appeared in three Arizona games but threw just 11 passes, with Murray not missing a start to date as a pro.
Andy Dalton joined the Bears, stripping the Cowboys of a high-level Prescott backup. Dalton was expected to leave, however, and the team does have multiyear Dak backup Cooper Rush back in the fold. The Cowboys also have 2020 UDFA Ben DiNucci and Garrett Gilbert on the roster. The Cowboys also worked out ex-Ohio State starter J.T. Barrett last week.
