Steelers Acquire DB J.J. Wilcox
The Steelers have acquired safety J.J. Wilcox from the Buccaneers, according to Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com (Twitter link). Pittsburgh will receive Wilcox and a 2019 seventh-round pick in exchange for a 2018 sixth-round pick, tweets Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (Twitter link).
Tampa Bay had just signed Wilcox to a two-year deal this spring, but given that it inked T.J. Ward earlier today, the club no longer need Wilcox around for depth. The Buccaneers won’t take on any dead money by trading Wilcox because they didn’t employ a signing bonus on his contract.
The Steelers had also been mentioned as a potential destination for Ward, but they’ve instead picked up the 26-year-old Wilcox, who boasts 58 career games (38 starts). Wilcox will earn $3.25MM in 2017 and serve as depth behind Pittsburgh starting safeties Mike Mitchell and Sean Davis.
Saints To Release FB John Kuhn
The Saints will release fullback John Kuhn, according to Field Yates of ESPN.com (Twitter link).
New Orleans had already parted ways with Zach Line earlier this weekend, so the club currently has no fullbacks on the roster and only three tight ends. That could be a temporary arrangement, as Mike Triplett of ESPN.com tweets, and the Saints could search for another fullback/tight end type in the coming days. Indeed, Josh Katzenstein of the Times Picayune reports (Twitter link) that Kuhn could soon be re-signed.
Last season, Kuhn played on roughly a quarter of the Saints’ defensive snaps and a quarter of the club’s special teams plays. In that time, Kuhn rushed 18 times for only 37 yards, but scored four touchdowns. He also added 16 receptions.
Chiefs To Re-Sign RB C.J. Spiller
The Chiefs have agreed to re-sign running back C.J. Spiller, according to Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star (Twitter link).
Kansas City released Spiller on Saturday, but Chiefs general manager Brett Veach indicated the veteran back could be re-signed before the start of the regular season. That’s now the case, and Spiller will play alongside Kareem Hunt and Charcandrick West in Kansas City’s backfield.
Spiller, a first-round pick back in 2010, spent last season with three clubs: the Saints, Seahawks, and Jets. While the 30-year-old hasn’t had a truly productive season since 2013, Spiller reportedly played well during camp and could be a surprise contributor in 2017.
Bills To Waive WR Philly Brown
The Bills are waiving wide receiver Corey Brown, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (Twitter link).
Brown, 25, appeared in all 16 games and made eight starts for the Panthers last season. During that span, Brown managed 27 receptions for 276 yards and one touchdown. The Bills currently have five wideouts on their roster: Jordan Matthews, Zay Jones, Andre Holmes, Brandon Tate, and the recently-acquired Kaelin Clay.
Buffalo signed Brown to a one-year, $690K this spring that didn’t contain any guaranteed money, so it won’t absorb any dead cap charges as a result of cutting him.
Saints Claim WR Austin Carr, QB Taysom Hill
The Saints have claimed wide receiver Austin Carr from the Patriots and quarterback Taysom Hill from the Packers, tweets Tom Pelissero of NFL.com.
Both Carr (Northwestern) and Hill (BYU) went undrafted earlier this year. Carr, a preseason standout, will become the Saints’ fifth receiver after the club kept only Willie Snead, Ted Ginn Jr., Michael Thomas, and Brandon Coleman on Saturday. Hill, meanwhile, is now New Orleans’ third quarterback behind Drew Brees and Chase Daniel.
Panthers Claim QB Brad Kaaya
The Panthers have claimed quarterback Brad Kaaya off waivers from the Lions, according to Albert Breer of TheMMQB.com (Twitter link).
Kaaya, 21, had been in the first-round discussion as recently as 2015, but a poor 2016 campaign at Miami caused him to fall to Round 6. Detroit waived him yesterday, opting to go forward with only Jake Rudock behind starter Matthew Stafford.
Carolina only has two signal-callers — Cam Newton and Derek Anderson — on its current roster. Kaaya could either serve as the club’s third quarterback, or the Panthers could attempt to sneak him through waivers again with the intention of placing him on their practice squad.
