Raiders Trim Roster To 53

Some of the Raiders’ cuts became known earlier Tuesday, with the team parting ways with Karl Joseph and John Brown. Here are the rest of the moves Las Vegas made to reach the 53-man roster limit:

Several of these players will be invited to stick around on Las Vegas’ practice squad, with the NFL greenlighting a second year of 16-man taxi squads. The Raiders’ cutting Brown and Doss keeps Willie Snead and Zay Jones on their active roster. Johnson played a part-time role on the Raiders’ defense last season, while Carrier has been with the team for the past four years. The Raiders re-signed him in March. Wreh-Wilson was aiming to catch on for a ninth NFL season, and while the former Titans and Falcons cornerback may do so, the Raiders halted his effort to land on their initial 53-man roster.

49ers Cut Dion Jordan, Kevin White

On Saturday, the 49ers put a pair of former first-round notables on the curb. Defensive end Dion Jordan and Kevin White were dropped from the roster as a part of the club’s 20+ cuts on Saturday. 

Jordan’s NFL career has taken some odd turns, to say the least. After being selected No. 3 overall by the Dolphins, Jordan did little to justify his pre-draft hype. After some underwhelming seasons, missed seasons, and a number of suspensions, Jordan found his way to the Seahawks in 2017. In 2018, he showed some promise as a rotational piece, and he parlayed that into a one-year deal with the Raiders. He hooked on with the Niners in early August, but he didn’t get to stay for long.

White, a former No. 7 overall pick of the Bears, came out of West Virginia with tons of hype. Over the last five years, injuries have limited him to just 14 games. The Niners have been decimated by injuries at wide receiver, but they still didn’t see enough out of White’s ~1 week audition to keep him. For his career, White has 25 catches for 285 yards and zero touchdowns.

Dolphins Cut Kiko Alonso

The Dolphins cut Kiko Alonso en route to reaching the 53-man max. Both moves were rumored this week, but the Fins were waiting to see if they could arrange a trade for the linebackers before letting them go.

Alonso requested a trade during training camp when he realized that he would be squeezed out of the Dolphins’ plans in one fashion or another. New coach Brian Flores is overseeing a defensive overhaul and he didn’t have much use for the veteran, despite his three years of starting experience in Miami. Originally drafted by the Bills in the second-round back in 2013, Alonso won’t play out the two years left on his four-year, $28.9MM deal.

Dolphins Sign Kenneth Farrow, Three Others

The Dolphins have signed AAF standout Kenneth Farrow, per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. Miami, which is in full rebuild mode, has raided the now-defunct AAF, adding linebackers Tyrone Holmes and Jayrone Elliott and offensive lineman Michael Dunn in recent days.

Farrow signed with the Chargers as a UDFA out of Houston in 2016 and saw action in 13 games (2 starts) that year. He totaled 262 yards from scrimmage, most of which came after a late-season injury to Melvin Gordon created an opportunity for playing time. Farrow’s 2017 season was wiped out by a shoulder injury, and Los Angeles waived him last April. He bounced on and off the Patriots’ taxi squad in 2018, but he did not see game action.

As a member of the AAF’s San Antonio Commanders, though, Farrow compiled 372 rushing yards (tied for second in the league) and four TDs. He added 12 catches for 95 yards, and he may get an extended look on the talent-needy Dolphins.

As Jackson writes, the Dolphins have also added former AAF players Joey Mbu (DT), Reece Horn (WR), and Jaryd Jones-Smith (OT).
