Jaguars Cut Josh Lambo

The Jaguars have released Josh Lambo. The kicking job now belongs to Matthew Wright, who sank two 50+ yard field goals to top the Dolphins on Sunday.

In 2019, Lambo led the NFL with a 97.1% field goal conversion rate. Then, in 2020, he lost the bulk of the year to injury, but went 5-of-5 on his FG tries while making 8-of-10 extra point attempts. This year, he went 0-3 and 5-of-7 on XPs, leading the Jaguars to promote Wright from the taxi squad.

Previously, Lambo was set to play out his four-year, $15MM deal, which would have run through 2022. The early termination will leave the Jaguars with a few million in dead money but may help them avoid finishing in the league’s cellar for a second straight year.

The Jaguars are now one of three one-win teams in the NFL, alongside the Texans, Dolphins, and Giants. They’ll aim for their first winning streak on Halloween when they face the Seahawks in Seattle.

Latest On Urban Meyer, Jaguars

Urban Meyer‘s first year as the Jaguars’ head coach/lead decision-maker has gone rather poorly. The team is 0-5, and Meyer has generated extensive off-field headlines. But the Jags are sticking with their sought-after HC, for now.

Shad Khan is not yet mulling a quick about-face on Meyer, but Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports notes many in the organization believe enough damage has occurred that will leave the owner no choice but to abandon this experiment after one season. The Jaguars’ London game is Sunday, creating a window for the franchise to reassess ahead of its Week 7 bye. Meyer said last week he would not resign.

The first-year NFL HC had encountered adjustment issues before the Ohio controversy earlier this month. Players and Jags coaches expressed confusion about Meyer’s temperament and decision-making before the season began. Meyer’s most recent run of bad press — centered on his decision not to travel back to Jacksonville from Cincinnati with the team and the ensuing video captured of him at a bar that weekend — led to more frustration among Jaguars players and staffers. Jags players are “laughing at” Meyer, one league source told La Canfora, who adds a team staffer called Meyer’s recent actions “pretty gutless.”

Khan issued a statement deeming Meyer’s actions inexcusable, and the team is still looking into them. Jaguars players and coaches did not know Meyer would not be on the team plane back to Jacksonville until he failed to show up for the flight, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk adds. Meyer said last week he had informed GM Trent Baalke about his plans to remain in Ohio post-Week 4 “way in advance.” But his decision continues to produce considerable fallout and has affected his standing with the team.

Meyer did not address his staying in Ohio after the Jags’ Week 4 loss, or the subsequent bar video, with the team until the following Wednesday. He canceled a Monday team meeting before discussing the issues. Once Meyer did meet with the team, coaches and some Jaguars core players were dissatisfied with the explanation, JLC adds. This came before the Jags endured their fourth double-digit loss of the season, a 37-19 defeat against the Titans. The Jaguars have now lost 20 consecutive games, marking the second-longest skid in NFL history (behind only the 1976-77 Buccaneers, who lost their first 26 games).

More on Meyer’s plate: the NFLPA is still investigating his comment on players’ COVID-19 vaccination statuses being considered when trimming the team’s roster to 53 players, La Canfora offers, adding that this process could well drag into 2022. While other teams likely factored vaccination statuses into their roster equations, Meyer saying the quiet part out loud expanded his growing list of controversies.

Steelers Sign WR Anthony Miller To P-Squad

TUESDAY: The move is now official. The Steelers announced they have added the fourth-year wideout to their practice squad. They will be the former Bears second-rounder’s third team in four months.

MONDAY: Anthony Miller won’t be joining the Jaguars practice squad after all. The veteran receiver “plans to sign” with the Steelers practice squad, according to Aaron Wilson (via Twitter).

NFL Network’s Aditi Kinkhabwala clarifies (on Twitter) that Miller has yet to sign a contract and will take his physical with Pittsburgh tomorrow. If all goes well, it sounds like the receiver will end up joining the organization.

Earlier today, reports indicated that Miller was set to sign with the Jaguars’ practice squad, and the wideout even tweeted “Duval” over the weekend (per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on Twitter). Miller was expected to eventually take the roster spot that was previously held by wideout DJ Chark, who suffered a fractured ankle during Week 4. Now, he’ll eventually be taking the roster spot previously held by JuJu Smith-Schuster, who is likely done for the season with a shoulder injury.

Miller was cut by the Texans late last week, just months after acquiring him from the Bears via trade. He finished his stint in Houston with five catches for 23 yards and one touchdown. The 2018 second-round pick flashed potential at times but generally disappointed during his stint in Chicago. In 2020, he took 49 catches for just 485 yards, and his rookie season (33 catches, 423 yards, seven touchdowns) still stands as his best season.

Jaguars Place C Brandon Linder On IR

Not long after beginning his eighth season as a Jaguars starter, Brandon Linder is heading back to injured reserve. The Jags are placing their starting center on IR due to multiple injuries.

Linder is expected to miss at least four games due to an MCL sprain and a high ankle sprain, Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk notes. The veteran blocker left Jacksonville’s Week 5 game in the fourth quarter, being carted off the field during the team’s loss to the Titans.

This continues a trend for Linder, who missed seven games in both the 2018 and ’20 seasons. Although Linder is one of the NFL’s better centers, he has missed 33 games over the course of his Jaguars run. Ankle and knee issues have dogged Linder in the past, with an ankle malady ending his 2020 season and a knee issue shutting him down in 2018.

Although the Jags changed regimes this offseason, they kept all five of their primary offensive line starters from their 1-15 2020 campaign. Linder graded as Pro Football Focus’ No. 3 overall center last season; this year, he slots 24th through four-plus games. The 29-year-old snapper had been on the field for all the Jags’ offensive plays until the cart-off sequence Sunday. Linder’s four-year, $51MM deal runs through 2022.

The Jags signed Rashaad Coward off the Steelers’ practice squad to fill Linder’s roster spot. Coward logged 15 starts with the Bears from 2017-20.

Jaguars Add Anthony Miller To Practice Squad

The Jaguars are set to sign Anthony Miller to their practice squad (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport). The wide receiver may get a quick promotion to the 53-man roster as well, RapSheet hears.

Miller was cut by the Texans late last week, just months after acquiring him from the Bears via trade. The Texans sent Chicago a 2022 fifth-round pick in the swap, but only used him in two games. He recorded four grabs for 20 yards in his Week 3 debut against the Panthers, but he was a non-factor in Week 4 against the Bills. In his defense, no one on the Texans shined in that 40-0 blowout. All together, he’s got five catches for 23 yards and one touchdown so far this year.

Miller, a 2018 second-round pick, flashed potential at times but fell flat towards the end of his Chicago tenure. In 2020, he took 49 catches for just 485 yards. Some say that shoulder issues held him back — to his credit, he played through the pain for a full 16-game slate.

To date, his rookie year — 33 catches, 423 yards, and seven touchdowns, still stands as his best.
