Eagles’ Avonte Maddox To Undergo Surgery On Torn Pectoral Muscle

SEPTEMBER 18: After undergoing an MRI and receiving a second opinion, Maddox will indeed have surgery, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. As a result of the procedure, the Eagles will be without a starter in their secondary for an indefinite stretch, or potentially the remainder of the season. Maddox is on the books through 2024, but none of his scheduled base salary for that year ($6.85MM) is guaranteed.

SEPTEMBER 15: Letting their starting safeties and linebackers walk in free agency, the Eagles paid up to keep their cornerback contingent intact. The new deals for Darius Slay and James Bradberry kept them in the fold with slot corner Avonte Maddox, who signed an extension back in 2021.

Slay and Bradberry are unlikely to have Maddox alongside them for a while. Another injury has cropped up for the experienced inside defender, with NBC Sports Philadelphia’s John Clark reporting the team fears Maddox suffered a torn pectoral muscle. Maddox is seeking a second opinion, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The final diagnosis confirming this fear would almost definitely sideline Maddox for the rest of the season. This continues a trend for Maddox, the longest-tenured member of the Eagles’ secondary. The 2018 fourth-rounder missed time because of hamstring, ankle and toe injuries last season. The ankle setback prompted Philly to place Maddox on IR; the toe injury sidelined him for three late-season games. Maddox ended up missing nine of the Eagles’ 20 games last year.

Maddox, 27, left Thursday night’s game in the second quarter. Second-year UDFA Mario Goodrich replaced him in the slot. The injury-relief cameo doubled as Goodrich’s first NFL action. The Clemson product spent last season on the Eagles’ practice squad, and the team retained him via reserve/futures deal in February. The Eagles kept Goodrich on their 53-man roster this year; he may be needed to play extensively going forward.

Joining the Eagles just after their Super Bowl LII-winning season, Maddox has been a regular on their defense since his rookie slate. Despite the team trading for Slay and extending him in 2020, the Eagles paid Maddox not long after. Maddox’s three-year, $22.5MM extension runs through 2024. He is due a $6.85MM base salary next season.

The Eagles already went into last night’s game without defensive starters Reed Blankenship and Nakobe Dean. Additionally, Philly released one of its recent linebacker pickups — Rashaan Evans — from its practice squad Friday. The team also reached an injury settlement with running back Trey Sermon, who landed on season-ending IR — after being waived with an injury designation — last month. This will sever ties between the former third-round draftee and the Eagles, who had claimed Sermon off waivers from the 49ers in August 2022.

Evans requested to be released off the Eagles’ P-squad, Schefter tweets. He has received interest from other teams. While clubs can poach players off P-squads, the player’s options are limited. Evans, who spent several months in free agency this offseason, will try his luck back on the market.

Eagles CB Avonte Maddox To Return For NFC Championship Game

Avonte Maddox has battled multiple injuries this season. While the most recent malady did not send the veteran cornerback to IR, he has missed the past three Eagles games. He will not miss Sunday’s matchup, however.

The Eagles will go into the NFC championship game without Maddox on the injury report. The veteran slot cornerback suffered a toe injury in Week 16 but will return to action to help the No. 1-seeded team attempt to book its second Super Bowl berth in six seasons.

Philadelphia’s secondary has steadily reformed down the stretch. The team had been without both Maddox and C.J. Gardner-Johnson for extended periods this season. Both experienced slot players, the latter of whom being moved to safety following the trade from New Orleans this past summer, landed on IR this year and missed a combined 14 games. But Philly will have its full secondary available against San Francisco.

Signed to a three-year, $22.5MM extension in 2021, Maddox is the longest-tenured member of the Eagles’ secondary. He has been with the team since 2018. This season, however, brought ankle and toe problems for the former fourth-round pick. But he will take his place alongside Darius Slay and James Bradberry this week. Pro Football Focus ranked Maddox 30th among corners this season, though he only played nine games end left two of those early.

The Eagles used seven of their eight injury activations this season, bringing back the likes of Maddox, Gardner-Johnson, Dallas Goedert, Jordan Davis and Robert Quinn from IR. Lane Johnson and Jalen Hurts never landed on the injured list, despite missing multiple games. The 14-3 team will have every starter available against the 49ers.

Eagles Activate CB Avonte Maddox From IR

Out since Week 9, Avonte Maddox is on his way back for the Eagles. The NFC-leading team designated the fifth-year cornerback for return from IR on Wednesday.

Maddox sustained an ankle injury against the Texans last month but now has a three-week span to return to the Eagles’ 53-man roster. After activating defensive end Janarius Robinson on Tuesday, the Eagles have four injury activations remaining. Robert Quinn stands to account for one of those; Maddox is on track to claim another spot.

Tied to a three-year, $22.5MM contract agreed to in November 2021, Maddox is now the Eagles’ longest-tenured defensive back. Drafted in the fourth round by a Super Bowl-winning team with an experienced secondary, Maddox carved out a role for himself over the course of his rookie contract and now joins Darius Slay and James Bradberry as corners tied to veteran deals. Those pacts pair with C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Marcus Epps‘ rookie accords.

Maddox, 26, returning this week would mean he would rejoin the league’s No. 1-ranked pass defense. While the Eagles have gotten by against the pass without the 26-year-old slot patroller, his return will benefit the 12-1 team. Pro Football Focus graded Maddox’s early-season work well, placing him just inside the top 40 at corner. In six games this season, Maddox was seeing action at a career-high rate. He logged 81% of the snaps during the six games he played this season. Maddox has been a constant for the Eagles since debuting, having played between 65% and 75% of Philly’s defensive snaps from 2018-21.

Eagles CB Avonte Maddox Facing Extended Absence

Already spending a chunk of this season on IR, Avonte Maddox may be headed back. The Eagles lost the veteran cornerback to a toe injury Saturday, and NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo report the injury is believed to be significant (Twitter link).

The Eagles used one of their IR activations on Maddox earlier this month, and the fifth-year corner played in three games upon returning. Maddox underwent an MRI on Monday and is out indefinitely, per NFL.com. He could go back on IR and return, but the 13-2 team has other players ahead in its IR queue.

One of those is C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who could be an option to replace Maddox in the slot. Gardner-Johnson, acquired via trade from New Orleans this summer, is eligible to return from IR this week. Nick Sirianni stopped short of ensuring that would happen, however. Gardner-Johnson, who has shifted to safety in his first Philly season, is out because of a lacerated kidney. The former Saints slot defender has missed the past four Eagles games.

Maddox and Gardner-Johnson are part of the Eagles’ first-string secondary, joining Darius Slay, James Bradberry and Marcus Epps. Maddox finished with two tackles for loss against the Cowboys. He suffered an ankle injury against the Texans last month and returned from IR when first eligible. It remains to be seen if the Eagles will move him back to IR and/or if this toe problem would allow for a late-season return.

The Eagles can activate three more players from IR this season. In addition to Gardner-Johnson, Robert Quinn is on Philly’s injured list. He is eligible to return in Week 18. Hurts missed Week 16 but is not on IR.

Eagles Activate CB Avonte Maddox From IR

The Eagles’ secondary will be back to full strength tomorrow in time for a divisional clash with the Giants. Philadelphia announced on Saturday that slot corner Avonte Maddox has been activated from IR.

The 26-year-old was expected to be back soon, given the team’s decision to designate him for return earlier this week. He exited the Eagles’ Week 9 victory with an ankle injury, and has been out since then. That marked a significant blow to Philadelphia’s personnel, if not their performance, on the backend of their defense. 2020 fourth-rounder Josiah Scott had been filling in as a starter in the nickel.

Maddox made 27 tackles in his first six contests in 2022, adding one interception and three pass deflections. That represented an encouraging start to his first season after inking a three-year deal to remain in Philadelphia, but the injury interrupted his campaign. Despite the injury, the NFC-leading Eagles have been able to maintain one of the league’s elite defenses. Philadelphia leads the NFL with 15 interceptions, and ranks second with an average of 179 yards allowed per game though the air.

Maddox will once again line up with Darius Slay and James Bradberry operating on the perimeter. That, coupled with safeties C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Marcus Epps, will give the Eagles one of the most formidable secondaries in the NFL during the closing weeks of the regular season and into the playoffs. That could become especially important given the loss of edge rusher Robert Quinn for an extended stretch after the trade acquisition was placed on IR.

This move will leave the Eagles with three activations on the campaign, one of which will likely be reserved for Quinn. A healthy defense will no doubt go a long way to determining whether or not Philadelphia will be able to translate one of the league’s most talented roster into another Super Bowl title.

Mitchell has been out of the mix for the Jets since suffering a dislocated knee early last month. Although Mitchell was carted off the field because of that injury, he appears on track to come back. The Jets also have George Fant on IR, but he has not yet been designated for return. The Jets have used Duane Brown and journeyman Cedric Ogbuehi at tackle over the past two games. Gang Green has six injury activations remaining.

The Giants four activations left. A 2021 sixth-round pick, Williams ran into a bone-spur issue during training camp. The Giants claimed Layne off waivers from the Steelers after cutdown day. The former third-round pick has worked on special teams throughout the season.

Eagles Extend CB Avonte Maddox

The Eagles have extended another member of their 2018 draft class. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports (via Twitter) that cornerback Avonte Maddox has signed a three-year extension.

The three-year deal is worth $22.5MM and includes $13.3MM in guaranteed money, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter (via Twitter). The deal will keep Maddox in Philly through the 2024 season.

The former fourth-round pick has developed into an important piece in the Eagles’ secondary. Despite starting only two of his 10 games, Maddox has been having a career year in 2021, collecting 48 tackles, four tackles for loss, two QB hits, two forced fumbles, and one pick. The 25-year-old has generally seen time in more than 60 percent of his team’s defensive snaps. In total, Maddox has appeared in 45 career games (25 starts).

Philly is still rosteirng four of their five picks from the 2018 draft, and each of those four players have now received extensions. Tight end Dallas Goedert signed a four-year extension with the team yesterday, while offensive tackle Jordan Mailata and defensive end Josh Sweat got new deals back in September.

Injury Updates: Packers, Adams, Cardinals

No surprise here, but Davante Adams will miss another game this week, per the Packers‘ final injury report. This marks the wide receiver’s third-straight missed contest as he rehabs from a toe ailment.

Adams had a strong start to the season with 25 receptions for 378 yards before going down and seemed on his way to matching last year’s 111/1,386 posting. The Packers were able to get past the Lions without him and they’ll aim to do the same against the Raiders.

Here’s the latest on other bumps and bruises from around the NFL:

  • Uh oh – Cardinals running back David Johnson is dealing with a new injury. After tweaking his back against Atlanta, Johnson will be a game time decision thanks to a sore ankle, head coach Kliff Kingsbury told reporters.
  • The Cowboys will have offensive tackles Tyron Smith and La’el Collins, wide receivers Amari Cooper and Randall Cobb, and cornerback Byron Jones are set to play on Sunday against the Eagles, as Todd Archer of ESPN.com tweets. All five are listed as questionable for the game, but they took the practice field and Friday and should be good to go.
  • The Eagles, on the other hand, will try to fly without: linebacker Nigel Bradham (ankle), wide receiver DeSean Jackson (abdomen), defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan (foot), cornerback Avonte Maddox (concussion/neck), tackle Jason Peters (knee), and running back Darren Sproles (quadricep).
  • Wide receiver Kenny Stills is set to return on Sunday against the Colts, per the club’s injury report.
