Wednesday NFL Transactions: AFC South

Following the 53-man roster cutdown deadline Tuesday, many teams will make slight tweaks to their rosters. In addition to waiver claims, teams can begin constructing their 16-man practice squads today. These ColtsJaguars, Texans and Titans moves are noted below.

Here are Wednesday’s AFC South transactions, which will continue to be updated throughout the day.

Texans Set 53-Man Roster

The Texans released a number of veterans today as they reduced their roster to 53 players:

Placed on short-term IR;

Davis Mills and Kyle Allen sit atop Houston’s QB depth chart, making Jeff Driskel expendable, but there’s a chance the veteran sticks around as a third quarterback via the practice squad. Driskel spent the 2021 campaign in Houston, getting into a single game. He’s started nine of his 16 career games, tossing 13 touchdowns vs. eight interceptions.

Chris Conley has spent seven seasons in the NFL, and he could have provided some experience to the receivers room. There’s a chance the veteran could end up back in Houston, as the Texans decided to carry only four wideouts in Nico Collins, Brandin Cooks, Phillip Dorsett, and Chris Moore.

Antony Auclair started 13 games for Houston last season, mostly serving as a blocking tight end. Terrence Brooks started three of his 11 appearances, collecting 21 tackles.

Texans Place Two On Injured Reserve

The Texans have placed two players on injured reserve, ruling them out for Sunday’s season finale against the Titans. Per Mark Berman of Fox 26 (on Twitter), the Texans placed safety Jonathan Owens and defensive back Grayland Arnold on IR.

Owens suffered a broken wrist during Sunday’s loss to the 49ers, ending his season prematurely. The former undrafted free agent has spent the past three seasons with the Texans, and he’s taken on more responsibility in 2021, starting a pair of games while filling in for Justin Reid and Eric Murray. In seven total games, the 26-year-old has collected 18 tackles, one pass defended, and one interception in seven games (two starts).

The safety recently talked with Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle about his increased role.

“This year they have been slowly building me up,” Owens said. “I went in for a couple of series one game and I played a big portion of the second half last game. Just building my confidence up slowly and like I said, I’m excited for the challenge.”

Arnold spent his rookie season with the Eagles, and he caught on with the Texans practice squad following the 2021 preseason. The Baylor product has seen time in four games this season, with all but three of his 35 snaps coming on special teams.

Texans Work Out WR Donte Moncrief

The Texans’ offense was rolling on Sunday, but the team is considering additions to their receivers corps. The Texans worked out veteran wideout Donte Moncrief today, reports Aaron Wilson (via Twitter).

Moncrief had one of the best seasons of his career in 2018, hauling in 48 catches for 668 yards and three touchdowns in 16 games (14 starts) for the Jaguars. Since that time, he’s only gotten into 14 games while collecting only 37 yards from scrimmage. This included a 2020 season with the Patriots where the wideout finished with only one catch in six games.

The 28-year-old wideout joined the Texans earlier this offseason but was cut by the team in July. Moncrief would still be hard pressed to make the roster, as the team is rostering six wideouts in Brandin Cooks, Chris Conley, Anthony Miller, Nico Collins, Danny Amendola, and Andre Roberts.

Moncrief wasn’t the only player to audition for the Texans. Per Wilson, the team also worked out safety Grayland Arnold, guard Jake Eldrenkamp, linebacker Sharif Finch, defensive end Josh Mauro, and defensive end Jason Strowbridge.
