Giants Place D.J. Fluker, Three Others On IR

Another offensive line regular will land on the Giants’ injured reserve list. The Giants placed D.J. Fluker on IR Monday, ending his season, Adam Caplan of ESPN.com reports (on Twitter).

A toe injury will lead Fluker to IR, and the Giants’ IR list will now stand at 19 after Big Blue also placed linebacker Deontae Skinner on the season-ending list. Defensive back Donte Deayon and linebacker Curtis Grant are going on IR as well, per Caplan.

There are only three open roster spots because the Giants signed linebacker Jeremy Cash to help add depth on its defensive second level, James Kratch of NJ.com tweets.

Fluker started six games for the Giants after signing a one-year deal in a presumable attempt to re-establish his value. The Chargers backed out of his fifth-year option in March, and the Giants added him soon after.

Skinner played in three games for the Giants, and Grant suited up for 10. This continues a rough season for New York’s linebacking contingent. Big Blue attempted to bolster its group on Monday by claiming Ray-Ray Armstrong off waivers.

NFC Notes: Giants, Bradham, Gholston

The Giants coaching questions are now back in full force after the team lost to Washington on Thanksgiving night. There was some reprieve from the consistent rumors after Giants head coach Ben McAdoo beat the Chiefs two weeks ago, but now there is speculation about where the front office may turn if they chose to replace McAdoo at the end of this season.

Ralph Vacchiano of SNY speculated a number potential candidates to replace McAdoo if the team were to move on from the second-year head coach. Vacchiano had a number of former head coaches on his list, which included Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley and Buccaneers defensive coordinator Mike Smith. He also included big college names that seem a little more like long shots in Stanford head coach David Shaw and Alabama head coach Nick Saban. Up and coming coordinators Teryl Austin and Frank Reich rounded out his list.

New York is a pretty big draw that could get a few more well known coaches to at least consider the position. Plus, the team will have a top pick, solid defense and a healthy Odell Beckham Jr. to build around. More coaching rumors will be popping up as the seasons moves along, but it’s interesting to see what names may be on the radar, even though there’s been no indication that the front office will assuredly to fire McAdoo.

  • The Giants have dealt with a number of injuries this season. The team has likely lost two more players for the season in cornerback Donte Deayon (fractured forearm) and linebacker Curtis Grant (knee), reports Dan Duggan of NJ Advanced Media. New York has placed seven defenders on IR so far this season, so losing two more depth pieces doesn’t bode well for how competitive the Giants can be in the final six weeks of the regular season.
  • The Eagles are the best team in the NFL right now, and are in the process of deciding which of their building blocks to lock up for the long haul. The team already agreed to a contract extension with Timmy Jernigan earlier in the month and now may be turning their attention to linebacker Nigel Bradham, opines Jeff McLane of The Inquirer. A former fourth round pick back in 2012, the 28-year-old leads the team in tackles with 56 and ranks as the 33rd best linebacker in football, according to Pro Football Focus. The Eagles have 13 players heading for unrestricted free agency after the season, so they’ll definitely have to make some tough decisions regarding who they want to build around and who they’re willing to let go.
  • The Buccaneers will likely welcome back William Gholston this Sunday after the defensive end missed the team’s previous two games with a neck injury, according to Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times. While the absence seems short when compared to some other more serious injuries, Gholston is thankful that the ailment wasn’t more severe. “The neck is a little worrisome, because you have to think about everything else, think about family and all that,” Gholston said. “They definitely took all of the correct steps. … I’m not glad it happened, but I’m glad they took the right steps for me to get back.” Tampa Bay will try to extend their win streak to three games when travel to Atlanta for a Sunday afternoon matchup.

Giants Sign Rahim Moore, Three Others

The Giants have signed four players to reserve/futures contracts, including safety Rahim Moore, reports Ralph Vacchiano of SNY. The organization also added linebacker Curtis Grant, running back Daryl Virgies and guard Martin Wallace.

Rahim MooreThe Giants have looked at Moore several times over the past year. The team discussed signing the former second-rounder last offseason, but the defensive back ultimately joined the Browns on a one-year, $1.85MM deal. Moore was cut in early September and earned a tryout from the Giants in October, but he ended up sitting out the entire season.

The 26-year-old spent the first four seasons of his career in Denver, where he started 48 games for the Broncos. Moore signed a three-year, $12MM deal with the Texans once he reached free agency, but he ended up compiling career-lows in games played (seven), tackles (16), and interceptions (one) during the 2015 season.

The Giants will presumably head into the 2017 season with Landon Collins and Darian Thompson as their starting safeties. The team also has undrafted free agent Andrew Adams, who started 13 games last season.

Virgies comes out of Division III Virginia University. Vacchiano notes that the running back’s career was derailed following a gunshot wound in late 2015. Wallace has one career game under his belt, and he’s spent time with the Browns, Panthers, Buccaneers, Bears, Cardinals, and Jets. Grant, an Ohio State product, spent last season in the 49ers organization.

The Giants worked out a number of additional players, according to Howard Balzer (on Twitter). The group included running back Marshaun Coprich, quarterback Austin Davis, tight end Cedrick Lang, and wideout Durron Neal.

Extra Points: Cards, Falcons, Fins, 49ers

The Cardinals made an under-the-radar move in sending a 2018 seventh-round pick to Kansas City for cornerback Marcus Cooper on Sept. 2. Cooper failed to register a tackle in his Week 1 Cardinals debut, but he racked up seven and intercepted two passes, one of which he returned for a touchdown, in the team’s 40-7 win over the Buccaneers last Sunday. As a result, Cooper earned NFC defensive player of the week honors.

Cardinals general manager Steve Keim spoke to Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic earlier this week about acquiring Cooper, saying, “We liked him coming out of Rutgers (2013) and he fit what we did schematically. He’s longer. And from Quentin Harris to Terry to all of our pro scouts, to Adrian Wilson to Malik Boyd, they all loved what he did on tape in the preseason. He was a guy we focused on. We weren’t sure if he was going to be released or not but liked him enough to call John Dorsey (Chiefs general manager) to see if he’d be willing to move Marcus for a conditional pick.”

Cooper’s picks Sunday were his first since his rookie year, 2013, when he hauled in three. In three seasons with KC, he made 38 appearances and totaled 11 starts.

More from around the NFL:

  • Falcons linebacker Paul Worrilow suffered a groin injury and will miss three to four weeks, his agent told D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Worrilow has been the Falcons’ leading tackler over the past three seasons. Prior to Worrilow’s injury, second-round rookie Deion Jones knocked him out of the starting lineup.
  • Dolphins running back Arian Foster is a long shot to play Sunday, but there is a chance he’ll play in two weeks, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. Foster is dealing with a groin injury on top of his hamstring issue.
  • The 49ers worked out linebackers Curtis Grant, Kyrie Wilson and Josh Kaddu on Wednesday, according to Adam Caplan of ESPN (Twitter link). Grant ended up joining their practice squad.
