Chargers Place Travis Benjamin On IR
Yet another key Charger will head to IR. The team placed Travis Benjamin on its injured list Thursday, due to a quadriceps injury. The Bolts signed defensive lineman T.Y. McGill to take Benjamin’s roster spot.
The Chargers and Benjamin agreed to an extension this year. The veteran wide receiver is now signed through the 2020 season. Despite the other injuries the Bolts have suffered at wideout, the 29-year-old Benjamin has only caught six passes for 30 yards in five games.
Benjamin joins Derwin James, Mike Pouncey, Adrian Phillips and Dontrelle Inman on Los Angeles’ IR list. Among the Bolts’ receiving corps, Inman, Keenan Allen and Mike Williams have battled injuries since training camp. The Bolts have also been without Russell Okung and Melvin Gordon for extensive stretches, though the former has returned to practice. All of these absences have obviously weakened the Chargers, whose four losses match their 2018 season-long total.
This is Benjamin’s fourth season as a Charger. His yardage total has decreased each year. That stands to continue, with the veteran now being unable to return until at least mid-December because of this transaction. A former UDFA, McGill played in four games for the 2018 Chargers. He has not played in 2019.

Cardale Jones did not make the team, with Los Angeles going with Tyrod Taylor and rookie Easton Stick behind Philip Rivers. The XFL has openly mentioned Jones on multiple occasions, so the former Bills and Ohio State passer could be a high-profile candidate for the upstart league.

Chargers Claim DT T.Y. McGill
The player the Eagles cut to make room for Timmy Jernigan‘s activation did not clear waivers. Instead, T.Y. McGill will head to Los Angeles.
The Chargers claimed the defensive tackle off waivers from the Eagles. He’ll join a fourth team in four NFL seasons.
McGill played in two games for the Eagles this season. He was not on the Super Bowl LII team, playing last season with the Browns (three games). McGill’s most notable work came in his first two seasons, when the former UDFA suited up in 25 Colts games.
Los Angeles had a need on its defensive interior after losing Corey Liuget for the season. The Chargers announced the veteran defensive lineman underwent successful quad tendon surgery on Wednesday. He’ll soon head to IR and begin a six- to ninth-month recovery process. That would put Liuget on course for Bolts training camp, if the rehab unfolds as hoped.
Darius Philon will likely move into the Chargers’ starting lineup, and McGill will join Damion Square and third-round rookie Justin Jones as Bolts backups up front.
Eagles Activate DT Timmy Jernigan
The Eagles have activated defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan from the NFI (Non-Football Injury) list. To make room, they’ve waived fellow defensive tackle T.Y. McGill.
Jernigan has been on the NFIO list since undergoing back surgery in May, but he returned to the practice field earlier this month. After a 48-7 drumming at the hands of the Saints, the Eagles can certainly use the help.
Jernigan, 26, started in 15 games for the Eagles last year plus the entirety of their Super Bowl run. In the regular season, Jernigan notched 29 total tackles, 2.5 sacks, and nine tackles for a loss.
The fifth-year pro will look to keep the 4-6 Eagles in the playoff fight upon his return. He’ll also look to secure his future in Philadelphia. After his operation, the Eagles pushed Jernigan to alter the remaining three years on his four-year, $48MM extension. Those seasons are now team option years with no guaranteed money.
Jernigan’s 2018 debut may come against the Giants on Sunday afternoon. It stands to reason that he will come off the bench in his first game back, offering support to Fletcher Cox and Haloti Ngata.
