Following the 53-man roster cutdown deadline Tuesday, many teams will make slight tweaks to their rosters. In addition to waiver claims, teams can begin constructing their 16-man practice squads today. These Bears, Lions, Packers and Vikings moves are noted below.

Lions Finalize Initial 53-Man Roster

Detroit got an early start on reducing its roster size Monday, but the team made the final moves toward 53 players Tuesday. Here are the moves from today that got the Lions there:

Houston was the only member of the Lions’ 2022 rookie class that failed to make the initial 53-man roster. The young linebacker should have a good chance to land on the team’s 16-man practice squad Wednesday, if he can clear waivers. On the other hand, undrafted defensive lineman Demetrius Taylor found his way onto the roster after a disruptive preseason. Another undrafted rookie, running back Greg Bell, didn’t make the roster, but will remain with the team on Detroit’s injured reserve.

There were a number of surprising, but necessary, cuts today. Igwebuike had a decent chance to make the roster due to his experience and ability returning kicks. Kennedy led the team in catches, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns during the preseason. His lack of effective use on special teams likely lost him his spot on the final roster. Parker started much of last year at nickel for the Lions. Unfortunately he was expendable after the offseason additions of veteran JuJu Hughes and rookie Chase Lucas.

The winner of the kicking battle has been crowned as Austin Seibert made the final roster over Patterson. Patterson showed plenty of ability during the last couple of weeks and it would be no surprise if he was to be claimed by another team off waivers by tomorrow.

Finally, it appears the backup quarterback battle was won by David Blough, who outperformed Boyle in preseason. Still, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Detroit peruse the mass of recently waived players for a new quarterback. They have the second-highest priority on the waiver wire and should have their pick of the litter if they think they can improve on Blough.

Breshad Perriman On Lions’ Roster Bubble

The Lions made Breshad Perriman and Tyrell Williams the veteran components of their post-Kenny Golladay/Marvin Jones receiving corps. But only Williams appears certain to be part of Detroit’s 2021 squad.

Perriman has moved onto the Lions’ roster bubble, Justin Rogers of the Detroit News notes. The former first-round pick has dealt with a hip injury during camp, but even when available, the journeyman wide receiver has not impressed.

“There just hasn’t been enough out there,” Dan Campbell said of Perriman’s injury-limited camp, via Rogers. “He had the hip injury and then he comes back, he was solid the other night for the plays that he had, but yet he had an OPI, which he knows better than. … I think he’ll be better coming off of this hip. But I think that room right now is still up for grabs. I think there is a heavy competition going on in that room right now.”

The rebuilding team has one of the NFL’s thinnest receiving crews, so it would be surprising if Perriman did not survive the final cuts. The Lions guaranteed the veteran deep threat $2MM as part of his one-year, $2.25MM agreement. The 28-year-old pass catcher also has played for new Lions receivers coach Antwaan Randle El previously (with the Buccaneers in 2019).

Perriman has played for four teams in the past four years, moving from Baltimore to Cleveland to Tampa to New York. With the Jets in 2020, the 6-foot-2 wideout caught 30 passes for 505 yards and three touchdowns.

Williams and fourth-round rookie Amon-Ra St. Brown appear to be the only locks to make the team, per Rogers, with the latter on track to be the Lions’ primary slot receiver. Second-year wideout Quintez Cephus and veteran Kalif Raymond are vying to start opposite Perriman, which was designed to be Perriman’s role. The Lions also have ex-Packer Geronimo Allison and former UDFA Victor Bolden on their roster, and Campbell said ex-UDFA Tom Kennedy has made a push to make the team after a strong preseason thus far.

Lions Set Initial Practice Squad

The Lions have announced their initial practice squad in a release, with Detroit adding 16 players to the unit:

Blough was an undrafted rookie from Purdue last year who ended up starting five games after injuries to Matthew Stafford and Jeff Driskel. The offseason addition of Chase Daniel made Blough expendable, but he’ll serve as the third quarterback.

Wiggins has been in the league since 2012, and he has extensive starting experience. He’s started 13 games for Detroit over the past two years, and will probably be the first guy getting called up if there are offensive line injuries. Williams carried the ball 49 times for Indy last year, but he’ll have a tough time getting any snaps now that the Lions have also added Adrian Peterson.
