49ers RB Elijah Mitchell Suffered Finger Fracture
Elijah Mitchell went under the knife today, but there’s still hope that he’ll play this weekend. Kyle Shanahan told reporters that the 49ers running back underwent surgery today on a finger fracture, per Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle (via Twitter).
The team is hoping Mitchell will be able to return to practice as soon as tomorrow, and the 49ers have similar hopes that he’ll be on the field Sunday against the Jaguars. We’ll presumably get more information on his status for Week 11 in a few days.
The sixth-round rookie has been incredibly productive this season, leading his squad with 560 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 116 carries. Mitchell missed a pair of games earlier this season thanks to a shoulder injury, but he’s otherwise started the last five games for San Francisco.
If Mitchell is forced to miss another game, the team could turn to Jeff Wilson, who recently made his season debut after recovering from an ankle injury. Rookie Trey Sermon could also be an option, but the third-round pick hasn’t seen the field in weeks.
49ers Waive CB Dre Kirkpatrick
A late roster replacement earlier this season, Dre Kirkpatrick is now on the waiver wire for the first time. The 49ers moved on from the veteran cornerback Tuesday.
The former first-round pick played in six 49ers games this season, making one start for a team that has dealt with some injury issues at corner over the past two months. Despite vested-veteran status, Kirkpatrick will head to waivers because the trade deadline has passed.
Kirkpatrick did not play Monday night due to an ankle injury, one that kept him out of practice throughout last week. Kirkpatrick, 32, has been with the Cardinals and 49ers since his eight-season Bengals run wrapped after the 2019 season. He made 11 starts for the Cards last year.
San Francisco used Emmanuel Moseley and Josh Norman as its outside cornerback starters against the Rams. The team also drafted two corners — Ambry Thomas (Round 3) and Deommodore Lenoir (Round 5) — this year. Kirkpatrick ended up playing 25% of San Francisco’s defensive snaps this season and was a special teams regular.
Although Kirkpatrick has bounced around since his Cincinnati stint ended, several teams were interested in him this offseason. Prior to his Sept. 13 49ers signing, Kirkpatrick visited the Patriots, Saints and Texans. The Alabama product allowed a 129.9 passer rating while in coverage this year — well up from his number with the Cardinals — but may draw interest for a late-season role elsewhere.
49ers Place Mohamed Sanu, Tavon Wilson On IR
Add a couple more to the 49ers’ list. On Monday, the team both wide receiver Mohamed Sanu and safety Tavon Wilson on the injured reserve list, per an announcement from head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Both players suffered their injuries against the Cardinals on Nov. 7. Sanu suffered his knee sprain in the third quarter, forcing him to the sidelines in the 31-17 defeat. Before that, the veteran was operating as the team’s No. 3 wide receiver, registering 15 catches for 177 yards through eight games. Without him, they’ll likely shift more targets to the likes of Trent Sherfield and Jauan Jennings.
Wilson, 31, has come off of the bench for seven of his eight games this year. He has a grand total of just ten stops in 2021 and it’s not clear if he — or Sanu – will return this year. In the meantime, they’ll turn to veteran Tony Jefferson, who has been activated for tonight’s game against the Rams.

OBJ Notes: Rams Pursuit, Contract, Other Suitors
Matthew Stafford and the Rams offense has been cruising, and the team added another weapon today when they signed Odell Beckham Jr. to a one-year deal. Predictably, Stafford is excited to see OBJ join a depth chart that already features Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods.
“I’ve played with a bunch of good (receivers) in my career, and he’s up there,” Stafford said (via Charean Williams of ProFootballTalk.com). “He’s a talented guy. It’s one of those things where everybody on our team carves out their role. They do a great job of figuring out what that role is going to be and going out there and proving it — both on the practice field and in games — and then getting those opportunities. I know he’ll do the same. There’s a lot of time between now and that. We’ve just got to make sure that we’re on the same page, go out there and play ball.”
While Stafford and the Rams won the Beckham sweepstakes, a few teams were left empty handed. That included the Seahawks and Russell Wilson, who wished the wideout well but noted that his squad already has plenty of capable receivers on the depth chart.
“First of all, with Odell, he’s an unbelievable talent, a world class, generational type of talent,” Wilson said (via Mike Florio of PFT). “For our organization, we are always looking for ways to compete and find ways to win, but we have some great guys already. We have some of the best guys in the world, so to have the possibility of adding another amazing talent would be amazing. If not, we are still ready to go, hopefully all of the way, and that’s been our focus. He’s a tremendous talent.”
Some more notes following OBJ’s decision to join the Rams:
- NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport has details on OBJ’s contract (on Twitter). Beckham Jr. got a one-year, $4.25MM deal that includes a $500K signing bonus and $750K for the rest of the season. The other $3MM is based on team-based incentives, so the wideout will get a nice payout if the team makes a Super Bowl run. This also means that OBJ could end up earning more with his new team than he was due from the Browns.
- The Rams came in late to the bidding process, and OBJ was ultimately enticed by the team’s passing attack. “We came in a bit late —but we gave him best shot,” a team source told ESPN’s Dianna Russini (Twitter link). “Sold great QB. 65% pass. Single coverage.” Another Rams source told Russini that the team believed they “needed to add one more piece” to their receivers depth chart, with the OBJ signing allowing them to basically rotate four players for three spots.
- Albert Breer tweets more details on the Rams pursuit, noting that the Rams initially told the wideout that they didn’t have a lot to spend. However, the player’s camp “encouraged” the organization to stay involved. Meanwhile, Yahoo’s Charles Robinson tweets that the Rams had interest in acquiring OBJ in 2018 when the Giants put him on the trade block.
- For failed pursuits: Chiefs coach Andy Reid made a pitch to Beckham Jr., per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler (on Twitter). The 49ers also failed in their pursuit, with GM John Lynch acknowledging that the team’s underwhelming record probably didn’t make them a legit suitor…although OBJ apparently did have past interest in joining San Francisco. “I don’t think close,” Lynch responded when asked how close the organization came to signing OBJ (via Can Inman of the San Jose Mercury on Twitter). “To be blunt some of that, you have to earn the right … He’s been fond of our place. He came up to me in [2018] pregame and said “get me here, get me here.”

49ers Waive WR Jalen Hurd
The 49ers cut ties with Jalen Hurd on Thursday. The former third-round pick has run into extensive injury trouble and never made his regular-season debut with the team. The 49ers waived Hurd with an injury settlement.
Hurd, 25, generated frequent offseason hype, but the ex-Tennessee and Baylor contributor could not avoid injuries. He spent the full 2019 and ’20 seasons on IR, and the 49ers placed the wide receiver hopeful on IR to start this year as well.
San Francisco chose Hurd 67th overall in 2019, doing so after he’d compiled a unique college resume. Hurd saw time ahead of Alvin Kamara as a Volunteers running back, rushing for nearly 1,300 yards for the SEC squad in 2015. He scored 14 touchdowns that year. Hurd transferred to Baylor and played as a wide receiver in 2018, amassing almost 900 yards for the Bears that year. He played in at least 12 games in three of his four college campaigns but could not stay on the field in San Francisco.
A back injury cost Hurd his rookie season two years ago, and after he recovered, an ACL tear sidelined the 6-foot-3 target in 2020. More knee trouble kept Hurd out of action this season.
