Amidst a number of changes on offense this offseason, one of the top priorities for the Chiefs is signing left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. to a long-term extension. Doing so could be complicated by a number of factors, including, primarily, his contract demands.
On that point, Armando Salguero of Outkick.com reports that Brown “wants to become the highest-paid left tackle in the NFL”. He adds that the 26-year-old is currently in the process of hiring a new agent, and that the matter of reaching the top of the tackle market (both in terms of annual compensation and guaranteed money) has been brought up at least once during that process.
The Chiefs placed the franchise tag on Brown this offseason, to no surprise. If a deal can’t be reached by mid-July, he will earn $16.7MM as a result, but getting the former third-rounder under contract for the foreseeable future has always been the goal for Kansas City. “He’s still working to get an agent, is what he’s doing” said head coach Andy Reid. “Once he gets that taken care of, we’ll be able to roll.”
Brown was drafted in 2018, the organization he grew up around during his father’s playing career. Seeking to play on the blindside – rather than at right tackle, where he spent most of his Ravens tenure – however, he requested a trade to a team which would allow him to do so. He manned the left tackle spot in Kansas City this year, earning his third consecutive Pro Bowl nod.
That level of performance, coupled with his age, led to the $20MM-per-year mark being listed as a starting point when it was reported that contract negotiations were set to begin. The only tackles currently at that level of compensation are Trent Williams, David Bakhtiari and Laremy Tunsil. As Salguero writes, $25MM per annum and $50MM in guarantees “will be in the conversation” – which makes this situation one to watch for the Chiefs and any number of other offensive linemen around the league.

Along with the head coaches being fired, a few NFL teams are looking for new general managers. Listed below are the GM candidates that have been linked to each of the teams with vacancies, along with their current status.
If and when other teams decide to make GM changes, they’ll be added to this list. Here is the current breakdown:

Another veteran pass rusher has found a new home. Melvin Ingram is signing with the Dolphins, reports Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network (Twitter link).
The recently-turned 33-year-old spent nine years with the Chargers. Beginning in 2014, he emerged as a disruptive presence against both the pass and the run, eclipsing the 10-sack mark in 2015 and 2017. The latter campaign saw him earn the first of three consecutive Pro Bowl nods.
Ingram ended his tenure with the team this offseason, signing with the Steelers to bookend All-Pro T.J. Watt. The move was met with optimism from both an individual and team perspective, but things didn’t go according to plan at any point during the season. Playing a smaller role than he did at any point as a starter with the Chargers, Ingram totalled just 10 tackles and one sack as a Steeler.
In November, Pittsburgh honored his trade request, sending him to Kansas City. He matched his sack total from his brief Steelers tenure, but his arrival coincided with the Chiefs’ general defensive turnaround, and he added a pair of sacks in three postseason games. As a result, the team expressed an interest in re-signing the South Carolina alum.
That possibility seemed to grow in likelihood when the Chiefs placed the rarely-used UFA tender on Ingram. Doing so would have given them exclusive negotiating rights after July 22nd, while guaranteeing Ingram a Chiefs contract of at least $4.4MM. As a result of this deal with the Dolphins, Kansas City will be in line for a compensatory pick next year.
While it may come as a slight surprise Ingram is on the move once again, the fact that his destination is Miami shouldn’t be one. The Dolphins hosted him just over one month ago, signalling their interest. He will join a Dolphins edge group which already featured the re-signed Emmanuel Ogbah and 2021 first-rounder Jaelan Phillips. Ingram should be able to play at least a rotational role on what figures to be a strong Miami defense.
Today’s minor transactions:
Chicago Bears
Detroit Lions
Indianapolis Colts
Kansas City Chiefs
New York Giants
Pittsburgh Steelers
Formerly the Chiefs’ starting center, Austin Reiter has now bounced on and off the team’s roster this offseason. After re-signing with Kansas City in March, Reiter was released shortly post-draft. The team has again brought back the former starter.
Reiter, wide receiver Gary Jennings and offensive lineman Chris Glaser signed with the Chiefs on Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com tweets. Glaser attended the team’s rookie minicamp last week. Reiter could have a chance to vie for a depth job in Kansas City, which now has 2021 second-rounder Creed Humphrey entrenched at the center position.
During both of the Chiefs’ recent Super Bowl seasons, Reiter served in that role. The ex-Washington seventh-round pick started 28 games from 2019-20 and was a full-timer in each of the Chiefs’ six playoff games during those years. The team did not re-sign Reiter after its Super Bowl LV blocking debacle, reshaping its offensive line behind the likes of Reiter, Joe Thuney and Orlando Brown Jr. Sixth-round pick Trey Smith later earned the team’s starting right guard gig, marking a near-complete overhaul.
Reiter, 30, spent last season with the Dolphins and Saints. He started five games with Miami. The Chiefs lost 2021 backup center Austin Blythe to the Seahawks earlier this offseason, making the perennial AFC West champions a bit thinner on their interior O-line.
It appears the Giants found a taker for James Bradberry‘s contract, but discussions on a prospective extension scuttled the deal, leading the veteran cornerback to free agency.
The Texans and Giants had a trade in place, according to The Athletic’s Dan Duggan, one that would have seen Houston send a late-round pick to New York for the seventh-year cornerback (subscription required). These talks occurred before the draft, and Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com notes the Texans are not believed to be in play for Bradberry as a free agent (Twitter link). Houston has since signed Steven Nelson and drafted Derek Stingley Jr. third overall.
The Giants agreed to pay part of Bradberry’s $13.4MM salary, per Duggan, but Wilson adds the sides were more than $5MM apart on a long-term extension. Bradberry was going into a contract year, but the Texans wanted to lock him down beyond 2022 upon acquiring him. By cutting Bradberry, the Giants will save more than $10MM. The former Panthers second-round pick, who signed a three-year deal worth $45MM with the Giants in 2020, will almost certainly play on a much lower salary this season.
Previously mentioned as a Bradberry suitor, the Chiefs are expected to look into him again, Wilson tweets. Kansas City lost Charvarius Ward in free agency but did use its first draft choice on Washington corner Trent McDuffie. Multiyear contributor Rashad Fenton remains with the team, though he is currently rehabbing a shoulder injury that leaves him uncertain to start training camp on time, as does versatile defender L’Jarius Sneed.
No serious pay-cut discussions between the Giants and Bradberry commenced, per Duggan, and the team passed on an automatic restructure of adding a void year to defray some of Bradberry’s cap hit to 2023. Because of this expected separation, the Giants became quite thin at corner. They drafted potential slot option Cordale Flott in Round 3 and have 2021 third-rounder Aaron Robinson as well, but Adoree’ Jackson moves up to the No. 1 spot for the rebuilding team.
