Patriots’ Duke Dawson Returns To Practice

A host of players began practice after being designated on IR or another off-roster list by their respective teams. The Chiefs could soon see Daniel Sorensen back in action, and the AFC’s other top contender through seven games may have the services of a secondary cog as well.

Duke Dawson returned to Patriots practice on Wednesday, veteran NFL reporter Howard Balzer tweets. The Patriots selected Dawson in the second round this year but placed him on IR due to a hamstring injury that appears to be healed to the point the former Florida Gator can practice.

The rookie was in the mix to become New England’s slot cornerback early in camp but now may be back as depth for the Pats’ defensive third level. Jonathan Jones has served as the Pats’ slot defender this season. Five corners — including rookie seventh-rounder Keion Crossen and rookie UDFA J.C. Jackson — and now-hybrid performer Jason McCourty reside on New England’s active roster.

One of the Colts’ second-round picks this year, defensive lineman Tyquan Lewis, returned to practice as well, Balzer adds. A foot injury sent Lewis to IR. He was one of four second-round picks the Colts made in April.

Also back at practice are Jets safety Rontez Miles, who was on the team’s PUP list, and Redskins cornerback Joshua Holsey, whom the team previously placed on its NFI list.

Jets Cut Thomas Rawls, Charcandick West

The Jets have become the latest team to move to 53 players, and did so by making the following transactions:

Released:

Placed on suspended list:

Placed on PUP:

Rawls, 25, first entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2015 with the Seahawks and broke out immediately when Marshawn Lynch was sidelined with an abdomen injury. In his very first start for Seattle, Rawls amassed 104 yards off of 16 carries and later turned in a 209-yard game. Things trailed off after that, however. He missed significant time in 2016 with a fractured fibula and became an afterthought in 2017. Rawls initially seemed to have a good chance at making the Jets’ roster in 2018, but he was unable to find a place behind top RBs Isaiah Crowell and Bilal Powell.

West was also fighting for a supporting RB job, and his limited highlight reel with the Chiefs suggested that he had a puncher’s chance to make the roster. West missed most of KC’s camp this year with a concussion and hooked on with the Jets a little over one week ago. Crowell also missed time with a concussion and reserve Elijah McGuire was dealing with a broken foot, but West still couldn’t make enough of an impression on coaches in such a short period of time.

Jets’ Rontez Miles Suffers Torn Meniscus

Jets safety Rontez Miles underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus and will be out for 3-4 months, a source tells Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). Miles is a possible Injured Reserve/to return candidate (IR-DTR) for the team, but in the meantime, it’s a blow to their depth in the secondary.

The Miles injury would help to explain the Jets’ signing of safety J.J. Wilcox. Wilcox initially agreed to join the 49ers, but had a change of heart at the last minute and flew to New York to sign with the Jets. Wilcox won’t flip again as Mike Garafolo of NFL.com (on Twitter) hears it’s a done deal. It was unclear as to whether Wilcox would have made the 49ers’ cut, but his odds look good with the Jets given Miles’ injury.

Miles, retained via the original round tender this offseason, was slated to be the top backup to starting safeties Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye this offseason. Doug Middleton, Terrence Brooks, and Wilcox will now push for that job, though it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Jets add another veteran option.

Minor NFL Transactions: 11/7/15

Here are Saturday’s minor signings, cuts, and other transactions from around the NFL:

  • The Raiders have parted ways with veteran defensive lineman C.J. Wilson, promoting Tevin McDonald from their practice squad to take Wilson’s spot on the 53-man roster, the team announced today (via Twitter). As Scott Bair of CSNBayArea.com observes (via Twitter), Wilson will provide Oakland with an insurance policy in case T.J. Carrie is unable to play on Sunday.
  • The Giantsactivation of Jason Pierre-Paul will get the majority of headlines in New York today, but the club also made another change to its active roster. According to Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News (via Twitter), the Giants waived defensive tackle Louis Nix, elevating cornerback Tramain Jacobs from their practice squad to replace him.

Earlier updates:

  • Washington placed backup outside linebacker Jackson Jeffcoat on season-ending IR and signed Houston Bates from its practice squad, Mike Jones of the Washington Post tweets. A second-year UDFA who’s played in six games for the team this season, Jeffcoat was not listed on the team’s injury report this week.
  • The Dolphins activated rookie running back Jay Ajayi from IR-DTR and cut center Sam Brenner, James Walker of ESPN.com reports (on Twitter). Brenner, an undrafted free agent who signed with the Dolphins in 2013, has played in 10 games for the team in that span, starting four in his first year.
  • The previously reported agreement between the Texans and lineman Eric Kush is worth two years and $984,706, reports Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.
  • The Jets have signed safety Rontez Miles to the active roster, reports Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News (via Twitter). To make room, the team released fifth-rounder Jarvis Harrison. The offensive guard hadn’t seen the field through the team’s first seven games.

AFC Practice Squad Updates: 9/7/15

While many teams filled up their 10-man practice squads on Sunday, plenty of teams didn’t confirm their moves right away, or kept a few spots open on those units. Sunday NFL Transactions: AFC East

Listed below are the Sunday roster moves for the four AFC East teams. Following the 53-man roster cutdown deadline yesterday, many teams will make slight tweaks to their rosters, claiming players off waivers or signing guys who clear waivers. Those transactions for the Bills, Dolphins, Patriots, and Jets are noted below.

Additionally, as of 11:00am today, teams can begin constructing their 10-man practice squads. For the 2014 and 2015 seasons, changes were made to practice squad rules that allow teams to carry eight players instead of 10, and the eligibility requirements for those extra two spots were also loosened. You can check out our glossary entry on practice squads to brush up on those changes, as well as all the other guidelines that govern the 10-man units, whose players practice with the team but aren’t eligible to suit up on Sundays.

Here are Sunday’s AFC East transactions, which will continue to be updated throughout the day:
