Louis Riddick Interviewing For Texans GM Job; Jaguars Interested
The Monday Night Football booth may see more turnover. Three of the teams that fired their GMs this season are interested in Louis Riddick, a former NFL front office executive-turned-TV analyst.
Ahead of his meeting with the Lions, Riddick is interviewing with the Texans, Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen of ESPN.com report (on Twitter). The Texans are interviewing Riddick on Wednesday, while the Lions are scheduled to do so Friday.
The Jaguars have also expressed interest, Schefter adds (on Twitter), but have yet to schedule a meeting. The Jags fired Dave Caldwell a day after the Lions axed Bob Quinn. Both teams appear set to construct rebuilds, and one of the projects could mean ESPN again changing up its Monday-night booth.
A former NFL defensive back, Riddick worked as the Eagles’ director of player personnel from 2010-13. He spent nine years with Philadelphia. Before that, he broke into the scouting world with Washington from 2001-04. Riddick has been with ESPN for several years and joined Brian Griese and Steve Levy in the network’s latest reprise of its Monday Night Football team this season.
The Texans are using a search firm headlined by ex-coaches-turned-analysts Tony Dungy and Jimmy Johnson. They are moving on from a tumultuous GM period, with coach-GM Bill O’Brien making several splashy and scrutinized moves during his year and change in power. The Texans and 12-year GM Rick Smith parted ways after the 2017 season, and Houston employed Brian Gaine for barely a year before giving O’Brien personnel power. As a result, the Texans do not have a bevy of cornerstone players under contract beyond Deshaun Watson and J.J. Watt. The latter may well be traded next year.
Jacksonville shifted front office structures during Caldwell’s tenure, using Tom Coughlin as its top decision-maker from 2017-19, but kept the former employed for nearly eight seasons. During that time, seven double-digit loss campaigns sandwiched the Jags’ outlier 2017 AFC championship game run. The next Jags GM is projected to inherit the NFL’s most cap space in 2021, and he will have two first-round picks — the first of those likely coming at No. 1 or No. 2 overall — to use to construct a rebuild.
Texans To Consider Brian Schottenheimer For HC Job?
An offensive coordinator with three franchises dating back to the 2006 season, Brian Schottenheimer has not received a chance to become a head coach. The Texans may be considering changing that.
One of the members of the Texans’ search committee, Jed Hughes, made a strong recommendation for the current Seahawks OC to receive serious consideration to succeed Bill O’Brien as Houston’s next head coach, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets. Schottenheimer has not been connected to a head coaching search since the Seahawks hired him to run their offense in 2018.
The second-generation NFL coach developed a reputation as a conservative play-caller, with the Seahawks finishing with the second- and third-most rushing attempts in 2018 and ’19, respectively. In Schottenheimer’s 11 full seasons as a coordinator, his offenses have never ranked in the top 10 in passing yards.
This season, Schottenheimer has backed off that a bit. Russell Wilson has already surpassed his single-season high for touchdown passes (36) and is on pace to end this season with far more pass attempts than he logged in 2019 (516). Wilson is also completing passes at a career-high rate (70.4%) while maintaining the 8.0 yards-per-attempt figure around which he has hovered under Schottenheimer.
A former Jets and Rams OC, Schottenheimer may trail a now-higher-profile coordinator in this search. Eric Bieniemy may be the favorite to land the job, with Schefter adding that many believe the Chiefs OC is a strong candidate. Deshaun Watson has advocated for Bieniemy, and the Texans are definitely interested in the third-year Chiefs OC. However, Bieniemy stands to attract interest outside of Houston as well. He is on the Falcons’ radar.

Texans’ Justin Reid Done For Year
The season is over for Justin Reid. The Texans are set to place the safety on the injured reserve list with a hand injury, as Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets.
It’s familiar territory for Reid, who has undergone surgery in each of the last two offseasons. Before the 2019 season, he went under the knife for a wrist injury. Last year, it was a torn labrum. It’s not immediately clear whether Reid will require surgery this time but, at minimum, he’ll need some time to rest and recover.
Reid’s season ends with 83 stops, two sacks, six tackles for a loss, and four quarterback hits. Despite the roadblocks, the former 2018 third-round pick from Stanford has quietly established himself as one of the game’s better young safeties. He’s also shown that he can play through the pain. Up until this year, Reid missed only regular season game with a concussion. Last year, he started in every one of the club’s other 15 games, picking up two interceptions to go along with 78 total tackles. He was also on the field for every defensive snap in both of the Texans’ postseason contests.
It was a rough Sunday for everyone in Houston as the Texans lost to the Bears, dropping their second straight game in lopsided fashion. They’ll wrap the season against the Colts, Bengals, and Titans before embarking on a pivotal offseason.

GM Notes: Texans, Saleh, Peters, Smith
The next several weeks will bring extensive news on the GM front, with four teams having fired their top front office executives this season. Other teams may create additional vacancies, and Washington remains in the mix to add a top decision-maker to its front office. Here is the latest from the GM circuit ahead of what will be an unusually busy marketplace:
- Despite Texans owner Cal McNair declaring executive VP Jack Easterby will not rise to a GM role, the current Texans power broker is expected to have plenty of input as to which exec the franchise hires to replace Bill O’Brien, Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com note. Easterby has emerged as a key voice for a Texans franchise in transition, outlasting O’Brien in the Houston front office despite the lack of a personnel-related background.
- Houston, however, remains high on New England exec Nick Caserio, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports notes. Should the Texans circle back to Easterby’s former Patriots coworker, it would continue an off-and-on two-year saga. The team tried to hire Caserio in 2019, but a unique clause in his Pats contract prevented a move. The long-coveted GM prospect is now on a new Patriots contract. However, the Giants — who also have a high-profile ex-Caserio coworker in power (Joe Judge) — have interest as well, should they fire Dave Gettleman.
- Robert Saleh figures to receive consideration to be a head coach again, and early buzz has emerged he is interested in pairing with a familiar face if he lands a job. The 49ers defensive coordinator is interested in bringing the team’s vice president of player personnel — Adam Peters — with him to his next destination, according to Fowler and Graziano. The 49ers hired Peters in 2017, the same year they brought in Saleh, and he has helped the franchise rebuild from one of its lowest points.
- Rick Smith is set to interview for the Falcons’ GM role, but La Canfora adds that the ex-Texans GM is expected to meet with at least one other GM-needy team. The Jaguars and Lions are the current teams in need — discounting what would seemingly be an untenable Texans reunion — though Smith was connected to Washington last year. Washington did not hire a GM but may look to do so in 2021. Smith served as Houston’s GM from 2006-17.
- George Paton has been on the GM radar for years — most notably this year, when the Vikings assistant GM backed out of consideration for the Browns job — but has remained in Minnesota. If Paton is to leave a job he is clearly quite fond of, La Canfora notes it may have to be for a West Coast franchise. A UCLA alum, Paton was in contention for a 49ers GM job that went (out of nowhere) to John Lynch in 2017. That said, JLC speculates the Bears could be interested. It is not certain they will fire Ryan Pace, but this has certainly not been a good year for the exec that traded up for Mitchell Trubisky.
