Titans To Sign WR Chris Conley
Chris Conley is marking his 30th birthday by joining his third different team this season. The veteran wideout is signing with the Titans on their active roster, having previously been on the Chiefs’ practice squad (Twitter link via Mike Garafolo of NFL Network).

Conley spent the first four years of his career with the Chiefs, registering 530 yards in 2016 and scoring five touchdowns two years later. His potential as a high-end complimentary pass catcher led him to Jacksonville as a free agent in 2019. Across two seasons in Duval County, he totaled 87 catches, 1,246 yards and seven scores.
That led the former third-rounder to Houston last season, where he made 10 starts and put up a 22-323-2 statline. He was among the team’s final round of roster cuts this season, but immediately re-signed with them in September. In 2022, he has bounced on and off of the Texans’ practice squad, making two appearances so far.
Earlier this month, Conley re-joined the Chiefs on a taxi squad deal. Unable to find playing time in Kansas City after the plethora of moves the team made in the wake of trading away Tyreek Hill, however, he will now look to do so with the Titans. The team’s passing game has been underwhelming so far, averaging less than 184 yards per game through the air.
A step back in that category was expected, after the Titans’ draft-day A.J. Brown trade. His replacement, first-round rookie Treylon Burks, is currently on IR after suffering a turf toe injury in Week 4. Conley could see snaps right away, but will likely be limited to a rotational role behind starters Robert Woods and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine.
Chiefs Bring Back WR Chris Conley
Bouncing on and off the Texans’ active roster and practice squad this year, Chris Conley is returning to his initial NFL home. The Chiefs picked up the veteran wide receiver on Thursday, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com tweets. It is a practice squad deal.
Conley played for the Chiefs from 2015-18, being part of the franchise’s first Patrick Mahomes-directed offense, before moving on for a Jaguars free agency deal. Conley, 29, has spent the past three-plus seasons with AFC South clubs but will now move into position to potentially help out as a depth piece with the AFC West favorites.
A 2015 third-round pick, Conley played a supporting role as the Travis Kelce–Tyreek Hill partnership formed during the late 2010s. While Conley totaled 530 receiving yards for the 2016 Chiefs — Alex Smith‘s penultimate starter season in Kansas City — the Georgia product broke through in terms of touchdowns during Mahomes’ MVP season. Conley caught five TD passes in 2018 and then matched that with the Jags a year later.
Conley caught 47 passes for a career-high 775 yards with Jacksonville in 2019 but was unable to make a similar impact in Houston. Signing for $2MM and $1.5MM over the past two years, Conley caught just 22 passes in 18 Texans games. With four years of experience with Andy Reid, Conley will rejoin a Chiefs team that has retooled at wide receiver following the blockbuster Hill trade.
The Chiefs lost multiple niche contributors — Byron Pringle and Demarcus Robinson — in free agency and reformed a committee-type approach at the position centered around UFA additions JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling. Those two have joined contract-year speedster Mecole Hardman and second-round rookie Skyy Moore in a still-uncertain Kansas City receiving corps — one that defers to Kelce in Mahomes’ pecking order.

The Cardinals’ moves come as a reaction to yesterday’s injury news. Baccellia’s roster spot was opened up in the short-term by the injury to Rondale Moore, but he won’t simply be a stop-gap. Arizona signed the 25-year-old to a two-year deal to remain on the main roster, per Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network (Twitter link). A UDFA out of Washington, Baccellia has yet to make a regular season NFL appearance.
Likewise, the fact that Ford will miss at least the first four weeks of the season makes the re-acquisition of Garcia a logical one. The former fourth-rounder has plenty of guard experience, including his three seasons spent in Arizona. It was only in 2021 that he logged any starts, but he could provide veteran depth behind Justin Pugh at least until Ford is able to return.
Addison, 35, was one of several veteran signings the Texans made this offseason to add depth to their front seven. He had a productive season with the Bills last season, notching seven sacks despite not starting any games. In his absence, Harris and Pierre-Louis will provide depth in the edge rush department on Sunday, and likely the short-term future as well.
Quick reminder that standard game day practice squad promotions are a recent development from the new CBA and COVID-19 seasons. Essentially, each team is able to promote two players from the practice squad to the active roster for game days. The players will automatically revert back to the practice squad after the game, not needing to clear waivers before rejoining the developmental roster. A player can only be promoted three times per season. If a team would like to promote a player for a fourth game, they’ll need to go through the normal method of creating space on the 53-man roster to promote them and have them clear waivers before placing them back on the practice squad. That is the difference between “Signed to 53-man roster” from the practice squad and “Promoted from practice squad.”
Texans Release RB Marlon Mack From Practice Squad
Chris Conley‘s name keeps appearing in Texans transactions. The Texans released the veteran wide receiver Tuesday, re-signed him Thursday and cut him again Friday. On Monday, he is back with the team.
Houston added the veteran wide receiver to its practice squad on Labor Day, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com tweets. The Texans’ latest Conley-related move will send Marlon Mack back into free agency. The veteran running back is off Houston’s 16-man P-squad.
In paring their roster to the 53-man limit last week, the Texans included both Mack and Conley as cuts. Mack quickly signed with the team’s taxi squad. He came into Monday as the only running back on Houston’s P-squad. The team has fourth-round rookie Dameon Pierce, Rex Burkhead, Royce Freeman and Dare Ogunbowale on its active roster, however.
Mack, 26, signed with the Texans this offseason, coming to Houston for the same terms (one year, $2MM) he agreed to with Indianapolis in 2021. The Colts barely used Mack last season, with Jonathan Taylor fully taking over Indianapolis’ backfield. The Achilles tear the Colts’ former starter suffered in September 2020 began Taylor’s quick rise, and Mack has not been able to re-establish himself since.
It is certainly possible the Texans circle back to Mack — a former 1,100-yard rusher — for a practice squad spot in the future. But his Monday exit continues a downward trend for a player who had been a multiyear Colts starter.
This will be Conley’s second season with the Texans. The former Chiefs third-round pick spent the 2019 and ’20 seasons in Jacksonville before signing with Houston during Nick Caserio‘s first offseason as Texans GM. He caught 22 passes for 323 yards and two touchdowns in 2021.
