Broncos Trim Roster To 53

The Denver Broncos made a slew of moves today to get down to 53 players. Notably, the team will place rookie second-round quarterback Drew Lock on injured reserve, meaning he’ll have to miss at least the first eight games of the season as he recovers from his thumb injury. The team cut journeyman Kevin Hogan and UDFA Brett Rypien, leaving them without a quarterback behind Joe Flacco. GM John Elway has said they’ll sign a veteran to backup Flacco for now, and we’ve already heard they’re interested in Brian Hoyer.

There weren’t too many surprises that we didn’t already know of. Brendan Langley, a 2017 third-round pick, failed to make the team. He was drafted as a cornerback, but switched to receiver earlier this offseason after he didn’t pan out on defense.

Here’s the full list of other moves:

Broncos To Re-Sign RB David Williams

The Broncos are re-signing running back David Williams and waiving offensive lineman Nathan Jacobson, per Ryan O’Halloran of the Denver Post (Twitter link). Denver selected Williams in the seventh round of the 2018 draft. Mike Klis of 9News first reported the Broncos were likely to re-sign Williams (Twitter link).

Williams was waived by the Broncos at last year’s final cutdowns, but subsequently spent time on Denver’s practice squad before joining the Jaguars’ 53-man roster in October. The Arkansas product appeared in six games and played 19 offensive snaps, rushing eight times for 36 yards.

Broncos running back Phillip Lindsay is expected to be ready for training camp while recovering from a wrist injury he suffered near the end of last season. The 2018 undrafted free agent took the first rep at Denver’s camp today, per Klis (Twitter link). The Broncos’ other running backs include 2018 third-rounder Royce Freeman, Devontae Booker, Khalfani Muhammad, and Devontae Jackson.

Jaguars Expected To Sign RB David Williams Off Broncos’ Practice Squad

Leonard Fournette is out because of a persistent hamstring problem, and the Jaguars just received news Corey Grant is going to miss the rest of the season. They plan to look outside to patch up this situation.

The Jags intend to sign David Williams off the Broncos’ practice squad, Ryan O’Halloran of the Denver Post reports (on Twitter). The Broncos selected Williams in the seventh round of this year’s draft out of Arkansas.

Williams did not make Denver’s 53-man roster, seeing Phillip Lindsay quickly usurp him en route to the team’s 53-man unit. The Broncos cut both Williams and De’Angelo Henderson after preseason play. Henderson landed on the Jets’ practice squad, and Williams stayed in Denver on the Broncos’ 10-man taxi squad.

Jacksonville currently has T.J. Yeldon and recent practice squad promotion Brandon Wilds as its only healthy backs. Williams would add a third name to that contingent. Fournette remains on the active roster but is expected to miss more time.

Sunday NFL Transactions: AFC West

Listed below are the Sunday roster moves for the four AFC West teams. Following the 53-man roster cutdown deadline yesterday, many teams will make slight tweaks to their rosters, claiming players off waivers or signing guys who clear waivers. Those transactions for the Broncos, Chiefs, Chargers, and Raiders are noted below.

Additionally, as of 12:00pm CT today, teams can begin constructing their 10-man practice squads. You can check out our glossary entry on practice squads to brush up on those changes, as well as all the other guidelines that govern the 10-man units, whose players practice with the team but aren’t eligible to suit up on Sundays.

Here are Sunday’s AFC West transactions, which will continue to be updated throughout the day:
