Bears Work Out CB D.J. Hayden

The Bears worked out a trio of defensive backs today, including a former first-round pick. The team auditioned D.J. Hayden, Lafayette Pitts, and Kevon Seymour, per Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune (via Twitter).

While Hayden hasn’t necessarily lived up to his 12th-overall selection in the 2013 draft, he’s still managed to put together an eight-year career. The veteran had spent the past three seasons in Jacksonville, but he bounced on and off injured reserve in 2020 while dealing with a hamstring injury. The 31-year-old ultimately saw time in five games, collecting 18 tackles.

The Bears struggled during their loss to the Rams, with slot corner Marqui Christian getting his fair share of the blame. The cornerback finished the game having allowed five catches (including two touchdowns) on six targets.

The Bears were also busy working out running backs today, with Brian Hill, Wendell Smallwood, and Chris Thompson all in for tryouts. Biggs assumes (on Twitter) that the team is simply updating their RB free agent list, which makes sense considering the team’s depth (David Montgomery, Damien Williams, and (eventually) Tarik Cohen).

Bills Add Daryl Worley To Practice Squad

The Bills have signed cornerback Daryl Worley to the practice squad, per a club announcement. To make room, they dropped fellow corner Lafayette Pitts

Worley, a 6’1″ veteran defensive back, was most recently with the Cowboys. He notched 14 tackles and one pass defensed with Dallas, but the fifth-year pro is best known for his time with the Panthers and Raiders. All in all, he has five interceptions, 35 passes defensed, and 249 total tackles across his NFL career. Now, the Bills will have him on call as a taxi squad player.

Worley’s history with GM Brandon Beane and head coach Sean McDermott likely played a role in the deal. This isn’t the first time that their affinity for ex-Panthers has influenced the roster. In the last year, they’ve also signed old pals Josh Norman, Mario Addison, Daryl Williams, Vernon Butler, and A.J. Klein.

At the time of his release from the Cowboys, Pro Football Focus slotted Worley as the No. 84 CB in the NFL, out of 119 full-timers.

Colts Place DE Kemoko Turay On PUP List, Cut Roster To 53

Here are the players the Colts cut to slash their roster down to 53 players Saturday:

Placed on reserve/PUP list:

Turay’s PUP placement will shelve him for at least the season’s first six games. It is a concerning sign for the former second-round pick, who suffered a broken ankle last October. The Colts were counting on him to play a key edge-rushing role, potentially as the counterpart to starter Justin Houston. The team has not been connected to Jadeveon Clowney since March and also avoided investments in other available pass rushers this offseason.

Kelly spent time on Indianapolis’ practice squad last year and could well end up there again. The Colts recently signed Hunt, a former Seahawks backup/spot starter, and added Grimble this offseason. Both Grimble and his ex-Steelers teammate, Roosevelt Nix, failed to make the Colts’ roster. However, despite the players’ extensive experience, each could be placed on Indianapolis’ 16-man practice squad this year. Teams are permitted to carry six practice squad players with unlimited experience.
