Jets Release S Jarrod Wilson

A surprise Jaguars cut earlier this year, Jarrod Wilson received walking papers from another team Thursday. After starting for the Jets in their Week 4 win, Wilson is now back in free agency.

The Jets released the sixth-year safety, doing so three weeks after signing him. The move interestingly comes not long after Marcus Maye suffered an injury that has him on track to miss a second straight game. Maye missed last week’s game due to the ankle ailment he suffered in Denver.

Wilson played 62 defensive snaps last week and served in a part-time role the week prior. The Jets activated safeties Ashtyn Davis and Sharrod Neasman from IR ahead of last week’s game but started Wilson and Adrian Colbert on their defensive back line. Colbert, who suffered a concussion against the Titans, has not practiced yet this week.

Wilson, 27, served primarily as a Jags backup during his first three seasons before breaking into a starting role in 2019. Given a three-year, $9MM deal ahead of that season, the Michigan alum started 28 games for Jacksonville over the past two years. But he did not stick with the team’s now-Urban Meyer-headed regime.

Jaguars Move Down To 53-Man Roster

The Jaguars are the latest team to squeeze their roster down to 53 players Tuesday. Here are the players the Urban Meyer-led regime cut to get there:

Placed on reserve/NFI list:

Some big names at wideout appear on this list, and the Jags also released former first-round pick Phillip Dorsett earlier Tuesday. Cooper is a former All-Pro kick returner who has held regular return gigs since that 2017 breakout. The fifth-year role player was the Cardinals’ primary return man in 2019 and filled the same role with the Panthers last season. Like Dorsett, Treadwell arrived as a first-round pick. But the former Vikings draftee has not been able to find steady footing in the league.

Jacksonville drafted Williams in the 2019 third round — two rounds after younger brother Quinnen went to the Jets — but the young linebacker did not start a game in 2020. Luton did, but the Oregon State product did not profile as a steady backup option. The Jags are going with Meyer-era investments Trevor Lawrence and C.J. Beathard at QB. The Wilson move comes after the veteran safety operated as a Jags back-line starter for the past two seasons.

Jaguars Exercise Options On WR Chris Conley, S Jarrod Wilson

The Jaguars picked up team options on a pair of players yesterday. The team announced that they exercised their team options on wideout Chris Conley and safety Jarrod Wilson.

Conley, a 2015 third-round pick, spent his first four seasons with the Chiefs. He inked a deal with the Jaguars last offseason, and he proceeded to set career-highs across the board, finishing with 47 receptions for 775 receiving yards and five touchdowns. The option will keep him in Jacksonville through the 2020 season.

Wilson joined the Jaguars as an undrafted free agent back in 2016, and he’s emerged as a dependable starter for the organization. In 16 starts last season, the 26-year-old led the team in snaps played (1,186) and tackles (73). He also contributed a pair of interceptions and six passes defended. The option keeps him under contract through the 2021 campaign.
