Eagles Finalize 53-Man Roster

Here is how the Eagles reached the 53-man limit Tuesday:

The Eagles added two veteran receivers this offseason, with one of them (A.J. Brown) bumping Jalen Reagor down the depth chart. Zach Pascal, who has played for Nick Sirianni previously (in Indianapolis), may also be a factor. But the Eagles, despite their moves at receiver and offseason trade rumors that engulfed Reagor, still have the 2020 first-round pick rostered. The TCU product is also coming off a solid preseason.

Howie Roseman said the Eagles, who have two QBs on their active roster, are planning to add a third — either a practice squad arm or a legit third-stringer — soon, and The Athletic’s Zach Berman and Bo Wulf note running back remains on the radar. The team kept three — Miles Sanders, Boston Scott, Kenneth Gainwell — but Sanders has been dealing with a hamstring injury.

Philadelphia’s receiver setup and a long football layoff did not leave much room for Allen, who has a rather notable career on which to fall back. A two-time U.S. Olympian in the 110-meter hurdles, Allen came to Eagles training camp after a controversial false-start infraction denied the medal favorite the opportunity to vie for gold on his home track at the World Track and Field Championships. The Oregon alum, whose 12.84-second time at a meet this summer is the third-fastest clocking ever in the 110 hurdles, caught a deep touchdown during the preseason but may well move back to his primary sport soon.

Ward became needed during the Eagles’ injury-plagued receiver seasons of 2019 and ’20; he caught 53 passes in the latter campaign. The ex-college QB was not used as much last season, catching seven balls in 17 games. The Eagles kept three rookie UDFAs (cornerback Josh Jobe, safety Reed Blankenship and offensive lineman Josh Sills).

Eagles To Release S Anthony Harris

After cutting Jaquiski Tartt, the Eagles are moving on from their other experienced safety. The team is releasing Anthony Harris, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets.

Harris started for the team last season and re-signed on a one-year deal worth $2.5MM this offseason, but a recent report indicated he might not be safe. The Eagles guaranteed Harris just $1MM.

The Harris cut came as the Eagles made a deal to acquire C.J. Gardner-Johnson from the Saints. While Gardner-Johnson played primarily in the slot in New Orleans, Philadelphia will use him at safety. The 24-year-old defender will replace Harris, who is going into his age-31 season.

Formerly Minnesota’s franchise player, Smith did not see that 2020 tagged season lead to big dollars in 2021. He signed with the Eagles for less than $5MM and took another pay cut this year. Harris has notched a six-interception season — 2019, leading to the Vikings franchising him — and has 61 starts’ worth of experience. He could find a new home soon

Eagles To Release TE Richard Rodgers

Richard Rodgers‘ third stint in Philly has come to an end. Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer tweets that the Eagles are cutting the veteran tight end.

As a vested veteran, Rodgers would have had his entire salary guaranteed had he made the 53-man roster. There’s a chance the organization circles back to him once players land on injured reserve, but another contract would likely provide the organization with a bit more flexibility (perhaps via a practice squad spot).

Rodgers made a name for himself with the Packers, especially thanks to a 2015 campaign where he finished with 510 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. He joined the Eagles for his first go-around with the organization in 2018. While he’s had brief stints with Washington and Arizona over the past four seasons, his regular season appearances have only come in an Eagles uniform. He ultimately saw time in 25 games (four starts) with Philadelphia, with the majority of his production coming during a 2020 campaign where he hauled in 24 receptions for 345 yards and two touchdowns. The 30-year-old got into three games with the Eagles last season.

Rodgers was competing for a back-of-the-depth-chart role behind Dallas Goedert and Jack Stoll. This move likely secures a roster spot for rookie sixth-round pick Grant Calcaterra.

Eagles To Release S Jaquiski Tartt

Jaquiski Tartt will not make the Eagles’ 53-man roster. The Eagles are moving on from their mid-offseason addition, Adam Caplan of InsidetheBirds.com tweets.

A longtime 49ers starting safety, Tartt had struggled to make an impression with the Eagles. Philadelphia is moving forward with Marcus Epps as its top safety, though a move to add another starter at the position may not be out of the question.

Although Tartt’s dropped interception in the NFC championship game proved pivotal in the 49ers’ loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion Rams, he had started 64 games with the team from 2015-21. The 49ers chose him in the 2015 second round and, despite several injuries during his run alongside Jimmie Ward, kept him around.

Tartt, 30, signed a two-year, $13MM 49ers extension, but after a seven-game 2020 season, the Samford alum was brought back last year on a league-minimum deal last year. Tartt did spend three games on IR in 2021, but he returned to start the rest of the way in a 14-game season. Pro Football Focus, however, graded Tartt outside its top 70 at safety for the season, leading to a tepid market.

Philly re-signed Anthony Harris this offseason as well and has a few young safeties in the mix with Epps as well. The team will save $620K by making this move.

The biggest storyline of the day for the Giants was the injury to Johnson, but they have been busy at other positions as well. Hand was a fifth-round pick of the Vikings in 2020, making 23 appearances during his time there. He primarily played on special teams, but registered an interception and three pass breakups as a rookie. Darren Wolfson of 5 Eyewitness News tweets that Minnesota was interested in re-signing him had he cleared waivers.

The release of Akins is somewhat surprising, given the Giants’ question marks at the tight end position. The former Texans third-rounder signed just before the draft, where New York added Daniel Bellinger in the fourth round. The latter had a brief stint on the PUP list at the start of training camp, but, if healthy, could be the favorite to take on Evan Engram‘s vacated starting spot.

Eagles To Trade S Ugo Amadi To Titans

For the second time in less than two weeks, safety Ugo Amadi is on the move. The Eagles are sending their recent acquisition to the Titans (Twitter link via ESPN’s Adam Schefter). 

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero tweets that Philadelphia is including a seventh-round pick in 2024 along with Amadi, in exchange for a sixth-rounder of the same year. In terms of draft stock, that represents a stark difference to the cost the Eagles paid to acquire Amadi last week: former second-rounder J.J. Arcega-Whiteside. More than anything, of course, that deal was a reflection of the wideout’s underwhelming career to date.

Amadi, 25, was thought to be a release candidate hours before being dealt to Philadelphia. He made seven starts last season, logging a defensive snap share above 50% for the second straight season. The 2019 fourth-rounder totaled 125 tackles, 13 pass deflections and one interception across three campaigns in Seattle. He was seen as a depth addition for Philadelphia, whose situation at the safety position is rather murky. Instead, he will now look to make the Titans’ 53-man roster as an insurance policy on the backend while entering a contract year.

In related roster news, the Titans also announced that linebacker Monty Rice has been placed on the reserve/PUP list. That opens up the spot for Amadi to fill, but means that the Titans’ LB corps will be thinner for at least the first four weeks of the season. The 2021-third rounder started four of his 10 appearances last year, recording 36 tackles. His rookie campaign was cut short by an Achilles injury, which obviously won’t be fully recovered in time for September.
