Lions Place Alex Carter On IR-DTR
The Lions have placed rookie cornerback Alex Carter on injured reserve with a designation to return, according to Tim Twentyman of DetroitLions.com. Carter suffered an ankle injury during the early portion of training camp.
Detroit traded up to select Carter, a Stanford product, in the third round of the draft earlier this year. The expectation was that he would immediately contribute to the Lions’ secondary, but now he he’ll have to wait a bit longer to make his NFL debut. Carter will be eligible to begin practicing after six weeks, and can return to game action after eight.
To replace Carter on their roster, the Lions have re-signed defensive tackle Jermelle Cudjo. Cudjo was initially cut yesterday, but now he’s back on Detroit’s 53 for the time being.
Steelers Place Maurkice Pouncey On IR-DTR
The Steelers will be without the fulcrum of their offensive line for the first half of the season, as the club has place center Maurkice Pouncey on injured reserve with a designation to return, according to Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (Twitter link).
Pouncey suffered a broken fibula during the Steelers’ third preseason game, and is expected to miss 10 games in total. The first eight of those, by rule, will be spent on IR-DTR — Pittsburgh has a bye during Week 11, so Pouncey could potentially return during Week 12. Losing Pouncey will no doubt be a large to an offense that finished first in DVOA in 2014, as the 26-year-old graded as the league’s sixth-best center last season per Pro Football Focus (subscription required).
Cody Wallace is expected to step in as the the Steelers’ new starting center, but the club also added some extra depth today, signing Doug Legursky, per Kaboly. Legursky was originally signed just days after Pouncey’s injury, but was cut yesterday morning. Now, he’s back on the squad to act as the No. 2 center.
Titans Acquire Terrance West; Cobb To IR-DTR
3:31pm: The Titans sent a conditional 2016 seventh-rounder to the Browns in the swap, per Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (via Twitter).
3:24pm: After claiming a pair of players off waivers earlier today, the Titans have added another outside player to their roster, sending a conditional 2016 draft pick to the Browns in exchange for running back Terrance West (Twitter links via Jim Wyatt of Titans Online). In a corresponding move, the club has placed David Cobb on IR with the designation to return.
West, 24, was the Browns’ leading rusher in his rookie season last year, accumulating 673 yards and four touchdowns on the ground, on 171 carries. He joined Cleveland before the season as a third-round pick out of Northwestern.
By acquiring West, the Titans will bolster a backfield that includes another 2014 draftee, Bishop Sankey, as the presumed starter. West had slipped down the depth chart in Cleveland, where the Browns are set to open the season with Isaiah Crowell as the starter and Duke Johnson in the mix as well. The club also may add a veteran back to complement its two youngsters.
In order to create room on their roster for edge defender David Bass and inside linebacker Steven Johnson, who joined the Titans as waiver claims earlier today, Tennessee has cut linebacker Justin Staples, linebacker Jonathan Massaquoi and tight end Chase Coffman, per Wyatt (via Twitter).
