Saints Waive WR Bryan Edwards
One of the ex-Raider pass catchers to follow Derek Carr to New Orleans, Bryan Edwards will not stick around with the Saints. The team waived the former third-round pick Tuesday, Field Yates of ESPN.com tweets.
The Saints gave Edwards a $1.1MM deal with no guarantees, putting him on the roster bubble at signing. The two-year Raider will not join Foster Moreau on the Saints’ 53-man roster.
Edwards, who spent last season with the Falcons, joined a Saints receiving corps housing Chris Olave, Michael Thomas, Rashid Shaheed, Tre’Quan Smith, Lynn Bowden and sixth-round rookie A.T. Perry. The team also brought back Keith Kirkwood this summer, though he is not exactly a roster lock. This early exit will give Edwards a chance to find a spot elsewhere, potentially on a practice squad.
A 6-foot-3 wideout chosen in the 2020 third round, Edwards produced for a Raiders team that lost Henry Ruggs midway through the 2021 season. Edwards caught 34 passes for 571 yards and three touchdowns that year, but not long after hiring Josh McDaniels as head coach, the Silver and Black traded Edwards to the Falcons. The South Carolina product did not catch on in Atlanta, catching just three passes and being waived in November. Edwards then spent time on the Chiefs’ practice squad.
Thomas’ health history brings questions regarding the Saints’ receiving corps, which lost Jarvis Landry this offseason. The former All-Pro remains healthy at this point, however, with Shaheed expected to again play a major role on offense. The Saints obtained Perry via the pick they received from the Broncos in the draft-weekend Adam Trautman trade.
Saints Sign WR Bryan Edwards
The Saints have reunited new quarterback Derek Carr with a former Raiders teammate, signing wide receiver Bryan Edwards to a new contract, according to executive vice president and general manager Mickey Loomis. Edwards will be joining his fourth team in as many years in the league.
The former third-round pick out of South Carolina easily had his best year during his sophomore season with Carr. That year he caught 34 passes for 571 yards and three touchdowns. Following that season, though, Edwards was traded to the Falcons along with a seventh-round pick in exchange for a fifth-round pick. His tenure in Atlanta was quite short as he was released after only seven appearances. He signed with the Chiefs’ practice squad but was released again at the end of the regular season, failing to appear in a contest for Kansas City.
Edwards immediately adds depth to the Saints’ receiving corps and is a candidate to return to the level of production that he originally had with Carr. At 6-foot-3, 212 pounds, Edwards also provides the size that New Orleans has sorely missed anytime Michael Thomas is out of the lineup. Besides Thomas, Edwards will also be competing with Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed, and Tre’Quan Smith for targets.
The Saints were searching for further depth at wide receiver, specifically eyeing Edwards, and they got him. They’ll hope that reuniting Edwards with the quarterback who has done the most for him in the past will elevate Edwards from his recent struggles.
Saints Want To Add Another WR, Interested In Bryan Edwards
The Saints elected to retain wide receiver Michael Thomas via a one-year, incentive-laden deal, and New Orleans is also rostering 2022 first-rounder Chris Olave and possible UDFA gem Rashid Shaheed, along with longtime contributor Tre’Quan Smith. According to Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football, the club wants to add another physical pass catcher to support new quarterback Derek Carr, and Bryan Edwards is on the radar (Twitter link).
Edwards, a third-round selection of the Raiders in 2020, spent two years as Carr’s teammate in Las Vegas, including a 2021 season in which he caught 34 passes for 571 yards and three touchdowns. The 6-3, 212-pounder clearly has the size that the Saints are reportedly seeking, and he also offers serious big-play upside, as evidenced by his career 16.2 yards-per-reception rate. Those assets, as well as his familiarity with Carr, certainly explain New Orleans’ interest.
And it is possible that the Saints could land him fairly cheaply. The Raiders’ new Josh McDaniels/Dave Ziegler regime traded Edwards to the Falcons last May, and he was slowed by a shoulder injury in training camp with Atlanta. He ultimately caught just three passes for 15 yards in seven games with the Falcons before being cut, and he finished out the regular season on the Chiefs’ taxi squad. He recently visited with the Giants, who have been actively attempting to shore up their WR deficiencies this offseason.
The top talents of an underwhelming free agent crop of receivers have already come off the board, though players like Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones, and Rashard Higgins remain available and could have a place in the Saints’ offense. Odell Beckham Jr. is still on the market as well, but there have been no recent reports connecting him to New Orleans.
In related news, we have some details to pass along on Thomas’ new deal. As Underhill tweets, Thomas now carries a cap charge of a little over $14MM for 2023, which is actually a bit of an increase over the ~$13MM figure that he was due to carry under his previous contract. Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football adds a bit more context, noting that the deal is officially a two-year pact that automatically voids in 2025 but is for all practical purposes a one-year accord worth between $6.26MM and $15MM, as Thomas would be in line for significant bonuses if he is still on the roster on Day 3 of the 2024 league year (Twitter thread).
As Triplett notes, Thomas will be due a $5MM signing bonus if he passes a physical on or about April 21 of this year, along with a $1.26MM base salary for 2023. He can earn up to $3.74MM in the form of a 2024 guaranteed roster bonus based on games played in 2023, and an additional $5MM in incentives — which Triplett details — are also available.
NFL Workout Notes: Giants, Campbell, Edwards, Neal, Carter, Fluker
As the initial surge of free agency has died down a bit, there are still several assets available on the market. The Giants have been fairly active in free agency and have had quite a few free agents visit for evaluations.
After allowing starting center Jon Feliciano to depart for San Francisco in free agency, the team decided to kick the tires on center J.C. Hassenauer, according to Jordan Raanan of ESPN. The former Steeler has some starting experience and would add some depth and competition behind Ben Bredeson.
The team also decided to check out a potential depth piece for the secondary in former Vikings cornerback Kris Boyd, according to Darren Wolfson of 5 Eyewitness News in Minnesota. Boyd was able to provide some defensive depth as a seventh-round draft pick out of Texas for the Vikings, but his true value in Minnesota came on special teams, an added benefit that should help him find a roster spot moving forward.
If you thought the Giants had enough receivers, they clearly don’t agree as they reportedly hosted former Raiders and Falcons wideout Bryan Edwards, according to Jordan Schultz of theScore. Edwards barely played last year after getting traded to Atlanta and signing to the Chiefs’ practice squad, but he gets a chance to compete for serious snaps in New York. The Giants have a bevy of wide receivers but lack any sure-handed starters. The team returns Darius Slayton, Isaiah Hodgins, Wan’Dale Robinson, Sterling Shepard, David Sills, and Collin Johson but has added Parris Campbell, Jamison Crowder, and Jeff Smith in free agency. It looks like a collection of strong No. 3 and 4 receivers that lacks the talent of a strong No. 1 or 2. This provides Edwards a window to perform well and earn playing time.
Lastly, according to ESPN’s Field Yates, the team hosted linebacker Justin Hollins, who started five games for the Rams last year. Hollins would be another potential depth piece for the Giants’ defense.

- After getting released by the Ravens for cap purposes, the former “Mayor of Sacksonville” could be poised for a return to the Jaguars. According to Demetrius Harvey of the Florida Times-Union, defensive lineman Calais Campbell visited his former team this past week. After an earlier visit with the Falcons, the veteran also has future visits planned with the Bills and Jets, according to Tiffany Blackmon of 92.9 The Game.
- The Seahawks may be looking to replace some defensive line depth after losing defensive end L.J. Collier to free agency. Seattle hosted veteran defensive end Mario Edwards earlier this week, according to Yates. Edwards is looking to join potentially his sixth franchise since entering the league. He started seven games for the Titans last year.
- After losing safety Marcus Epps to free agency, the Eagles continue to look at safety options. Philadelphia hosted safety Keanu Neal earlier this week, according to Yates. Unfortunately for Neal, the team signed former Steelers first-round pick Terrell Edmunds yesterday, adding him to the addition of Justin Evans. Neal has experience playing linebacker, though, which may afford him an additional chance to make a roster as free agency continues.
- While the wide receiver waters have been fairly stagnant, former Chargers wideout DeAndre Carter‘s market is starting to heat up. After a career year, the 29-year-old visited the Raiders yesterday, according to Schultz. The Raiders have added Jakobi Meyers, Phillip Dorsett, and Steven Sims after losing Mack Hollins. Carter would likely be competing for WR3 snaps behind Davante Adams and Meyers.
- Offensive lineman D.J. Fluker, who last appeared in an NFL game in 2020 with the Ravens, is seeking a return to the NFL. Fluker spent 2021 on three different teams’ practice squads, but after getting released from the Jaguars’ on New Year’s Eve 2021, he has remained a free agent for over a year. According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, Fluker worked out at Alabama’s pro day this year with top prospects Bryce Young and Will Anderson. The workout drew some attention from NFL teams and could help Fluker make it back to the league.

Raiders To Trade Bryan Edwards To Falcons
Days after the Raiders signed Keelan Cole, they are moving on from one of their other auxiliary wide receivers. They are trading Bryan Edwards to the Falcons, Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal tweets.
The Raiders will add a 2023 fifth-round pick in this deal and send the Falcons a 2023 seventh, according to ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter (on Twitter). It should not surprise this pick swap-based deal reminds of the kind the Patriots have made frequently in recent years, with the Raiders’ new regime coming over from New England.
Two years remain on Edwards’ rookie contract; this will both give a former Day 2 pick a fresh start but also provide an opportunity to impress for a team with a thinner receiver depth chart. Although the Falcons drafted Drake London eighth overall, they entered Friday light on supporting-casters at the position. Edwards will join the likes of Olamide Zaccheaus, Auden Tate, Damiere Byrd and KhaDarel Hodge. The Falcons now possess a host of big targets for ex-Raider Marcus Mariota, with the 6-foot-3 Edwards joining London (6-4), Tate (6-5) and Kyle Pitts (6-6).
This trade marks another Raiders separation from an early-round 2020 draftee. They have waived first-rounders Henry Ruggs and Damon Arnette and traded third-rounders Lynn Bowden Jr. and Edwards. The South Carolina product battled injuries as a rookie but showed progress last season, hauling in 34 passes for 571 yards and three touchdowns. Las Vegas’ Dave Ziegler– and Josh McDaniels-led regime, however, has since acquired Cole, Demarcus Robinson and Mack Hollins, crowding the depth chart around top targets Davante Adams, Darren Waller and Hunter Renfrow.
Atlanta has seen even more changes at the receiver position than Las Vegas, having seen its Julio Jones–Calvin Ridley–Russell Gage depth chart splinter. Ridley is banned for the year on a gambling suspension, and the Falcons were close to trading the former first-rounder to the Eagles. Gage, who led Falcon wideouts in receiving yardage by a wide margin last season, is now a Buccaneer.
