Brandon Powell

Vikings To Re-Sign WR Brandon Powell

Brandon Powell is returning to Minnesota. The free agent wide receiver is signing a new one-year deal with the Vikings, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The former UDFA has bounced around the NFL during his brief career, but he seemed to find a role with the Vikings in 2023. The wideout got into all 17 games last season, finishing with career highs in receptions (29) and receiving yards (324). Powell also served as the team’s primary punt returner, leading the league with 37 punt returns.

Powell previously had stints with the Lions, Falcons, Bills, Dolphins, and Rams. He’s appeared in 61 career games, hauling in 76 receptions. He also has some experience in the running game, garnering 17 carries for the Rams in 2022.

The Vikings face an uncertain offensive future in a post-Kirk Cousins era, but the organization is apparently valuing continuity in their receivers room. With K.J. Osborn sitting in free agency, Powell could have a path to a significant role in 2024 behind Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison. The Vikings are also rostering the likes of N’Keal Harry, Jalen Nailor, and Trishton Jackson at the position.

Vikings To Sign WR Brandon Powell

As the Rams bid farewell to a few players from their Super Bowl LVI-winning team, Brandon Powell will rejoin some of the coaches who were part of that squad.

The Vikings are signing the veteran receiver/return specialist, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets. Powell’s Minnesota move will feature reunions with Vikings HC Kevin O’Connell and OC Wes Phillips, each of whom being ex-Sean McVay lieutenants. It is a one-year agreement.

Although Powell bounced around early in his career, he spent the past two seasons as the Rams’ primary return man. The ex-Florida Gator handled kick- and punt-return responsibilities for the Rams, taking a punt back for a score during the 2021 season. The 5-foot-8 receiver has not contributed much in the passing game, though he does present some gadget options for O’Connell. The Rams gave Powell 17 carries, which he turned into 80 yards, last season. Powell added 24 receptions for 156 yards in 2022.

Minnesota used Jalen Reagor as its full-time punt returner last season. Reagor remains under contract; the ex-Eagle first-rounder also fumbled four times during his Vikings debut. Kene Nwangwu, the team’s primary kick returner in 2022, is also signed to his rookie deal. Nwangwu posted a 97-yard kick-return score last season.

The Rams have moved on from a few contributors this offseason. They released Bobby Wagner and Leonard Floyd, and cornerback David Long signed with the Raiders on Wednesday. Defensive tackle Greg Gaines signed with the Buccaneers. A’Shawn Robinson remains unattached, but he has visited the Giants. Ditto Taylor Rapp, who has met with the Patriots and Bengals.

NFC West Notes: Rams, Cards, 49ers, Hawks

Van Jefferson‘s second 2022 surgery will shut him down for weeks. In their No. 3 wide receiver’s stead, the Rams are using the likes of second-round pick Tutu Atwell, veteran backup Ben Skowronek, converted tight end Jacob Harris and fifth-year return specialist Brandon Powell, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic notes (subscription required). Of course, the Rams have also been linked — mostly by their own words — to a second Odell Beckham Jr. contract.

We’ll look at those guys and then we’ll continue to see if we can figure out when Odell will come back at some point as well,” Sean McVay said.

Jefferson’s surgery went well, Rodrigue tweets, adding a Week 1 return should be realistic. Although the Rams signed Beckham when Robert Woods was still healthy, Jefferson’s role was not threatened after the latter’s injury. He finished his sophomore NFL slate with 50 receptions, 802 yards (nearly quadrupling rookie-year total) and six touchdowns. Although Beckham coming back and joining Cooper Kupp and Allen Robinson would threaten Jefferson’s playing time, the third-year receiver should have a firm grip on the WR3 job for a bit.

Here is the latest from the NFC West:

  • Activated off the non-football injury list Tuesday, Marquise Brown found himself in off-field trouble several hours later. The recently acquired Cardinals wide receiver was arrested on a criminal speeding charge and booked in the Maricopa County Jail. The arrest occurred at 7:05am Wednesday in north Phoenix, according to Jose Romero of the Arizona Republic. Brown was traveling from his home to the Cards’ facility, per Kliff Kingsbury. Brown, acquired in a draft-weekend deal that saw the Cardinals’ first-round pick change hands, faces a potential suspension under the personal conduct policy purview.
  • D.J. HumphriesCardinals extension is for three years and $51.8MM, Pro Football Focus’ Brad Spielberger tweets. This deal comes with a $17MM signing bonus, per ESPN.com’s Field Yates (on Twitter). Humphries’ 2022 cap number will also drop from $19.9MM to $12.6MM, creating some additional space for the Cards. Humphries’ extension is worth a bit more than his previous contract (three years, $44.3MM), but it comes in eighth among left tackles for AAV.
  • The 49ers may go with two unseasoned guards this year. They have been using fourth-round rookie Spencer Burford exclusively as their first-string right guard, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle notes. If the Texas-San Antonio product can stick at this position, it could relocate two-year San Francisco right guard starter Daniel Brunskill to center, where he is battling veteran backup Jake Brendel to take over for Alex Mack. Buford is vying to join Aaron Banks as a guard starter. The 2021 second-round pick logged five offensive snaps as a rookie but looks to have a firm grip on the 49ers’ left guard gig in camp.
  • The SeahawksReuben Foster workout does not look to signal an immediate signing, Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times tweets. This appears to be a case of the Seahawks kicking the tires on the former first-round pick. Foster has not played in a game since the 2018 season. Although Washington claimed the once-high-profile linebacker during the 2018 season, he never played a down for the team. An ACL tear during Washington’s 2019 offseason program led the Alabama product out of the league. However, the Seahawks are the fifth team to work out Foster since his Washington contract expired following the 2020 season. The Jets, Jaguars, Browns and Dolphins have also brought him in.
  • Former Jets quarterback James Morgan also worked out for the Seahawks, auditioning Thursday. The team, which is holding a long-scrutinized Geno SmithDrew Lock competition, is not planning an immediate Morgan signing, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com tweets. A Green Bay native, Morgan, 25, also worked out for the Packers recently.

Rams Re-Sign WR/KR Brandon Powell

The Rams are bringing back a key special teamer from their Super Bowl run. According to Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network, the team is re-signing wide receiver and return man Brandon Powell to a one-year deal.

Powell entered the league in 2018 as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Florida signing with the Lions. Powell earned a start that season in place of Kenny Golladay and recorded 6 receptions for 103 yards in his lone start. After being waived, Powell was picked up by the Falcons for the 2019 NFL season. He was promoted to the active roster that year, but didn’t see any game action in Atlanta until the 2020 NFL season. He functioned as their main return man that year while also reeling in 2 receiving touchdowns. After the season ended, he signed a contract to join the Bills, but was released before the season began. The Dolphins picked him up, stashing him on their practice squad for about a month before releasing him, as well.

It was at this time that Powell found his way to Los Angeles, signing to the Rams’ practice squad in early November. Powell became the team’s return man, even housing a punt for a 61-yard touchdown in the Rams’ postseason-clinching win over the Vikings. His receiving talents likely won’t be needed as the team returns Cooper Kupp and Van Jefferson, brings in Allen Robinson II, and hopes to bring back Odell Beckham Jr., but as a part of the Rams’ Super Bowl-winning squad, Los Angeles is willing to extend another year to the young special teamer.
